Super 8 -- Grading and Discussion Thread

I found the kids' dialogue hilarious. My theater was pretty full, and there was a ton of laughter during the whole thing. I just loved the banter between the kids. It reminded me of the kids from "The Goonies" and "The Sandlot."

Yeah, they were like this weird bizzaro version of the Goonies kids, only with bizzaro Elliot from bizzaro ET instead of Mikey. The fat kid with a Polish surname (ding dong - cliche alert!) was obviously supposed to be Chunk minus the funny, and that kid with braces was a white Data minus the accent, genius and... Funny.

I really did not think the lensflares were that bad. I noticed them during Star Trek.... they didn't bother me like they bothered a lot of other people, but I at least noticed them. In Super 8, I remember seeing one or two, and they weren't even anything to write home about.

Uhm, there was only like 30 people in the theatre (me and three of my buddies included), and I don't remember hearing anyone laugh... What part did you find funny
exactly?

It's too bad that you saw the movie with so few people. I can't remember many specifics (except for the exchange when the fat kid is about to set his friend's leg), but I remember the dialogue and the relationships between the kids to be the highlight of the movie.

I spotted one lens flare towards the end.
WTF? You could play a drinking game with those lens flares.

Sure...if you spend the whole movie looking for them. They weren't nearly as foregrounded as the lens flares were in Abram's previous movie, Star Trek.

With the Thursday dailies Super 8 has crossed the $100m domestic total and has $140m worldwide total.

I'll be seeing this again over the July 4th weekend to honor a promise. Good thing I enjoyed it a few weeks back, I'm looking forward to the rewatch.

Oh no, the lens flares weren't nearly as bad as they were in Trek'10 but I noticed them plenty of times, most of the time they were in the top edge of the screening almost spanning the whole width, several times with them I thought it was a projector malfunction.

the flares didn't bother me in Super 8. there weren't as many, and really i just think of it as a director trademark. like Tarantino having women with bare feet in his movies.

Pointing a flashlight into viewer's eyes, a truly brilliant trademark!

But for some reason, i liked it in Star Trek (though there's really no justification for those LED's pointed straight into crew members' faces on 1701 and Kelvin).

Mediocre at best. Not worth reading the whole thread. I think my favorite part was the sudden appearance of the rope, but getting out of the hole without climbing out of it was pretty good. The confused symbolism, meh.

Loved it. It was like watching an all-new, vintage late 70s Spielberg movie. Had a great time.

Saw Super 8 the other night. Simply fantastic. The kids were great. It's the first 'summer blockbuster' film I've seen in long while that cares about the characters and takes time to get to know them. It's like Stand By Me+The Goonies+ET+Close Encounters+Jaws.

Liked it quite a bit.

A definite A-. Tho' I'd understand people giving it B also - I loved it for it's old world charm - it reminded me of so many movies that formed a happy part of my childhood. Elle Fanning was surprisingly reminiscent of an adult Drew Barrymore to me. And those two scenes were just fantastic. It's almost like everybody, including the movie itself, needs to stop and watch as a star is born.

And while I thought the lead kid (Joe Lamb) was a great casting/hair choice, I thought the other real standout is his friend who's the director of their movie.

The alien itself was ok - I wanted to see more of an enjoyment (if you will) of the alien finally getting Kellick (the usaf guy in charge) but I understood that it shouldn't be the main point of a kids movie. Also kinda liked the fact that the alien actually ate the humans - it's not like we don't eat cattle, even tho' we may sympathize with the predicament of some of them and they can be pets and even members of the family.

Another thing that was surprising to me was that for a bit it actually looked like the army was shooting at the kids! At least their armored vehicles seemed to be chasing the kids.
