Wrong-Way Penguin

Cute animal story of the week: A young emperor penguin got a bit lost — and ended up 2000 miles from its Antarctic home on a New Zealand beach.

Local conservation authorities say the penguin is healthy and well-fed, and are apparently planning to let nature take its course, assuming the bird will eventually find its way back home.

This story reminds me of the classic Bugs Bunny cartoon 8 Ball Bunny where he tries to get a lost penguin home.

The whole "let nature take its course" thing makes me nervous. Why not take the penguin home? It's clearly lost and may not have any idea how to get back.

Take it home and train it to answer the door and mix martinis.

Win-Win.

Not your home.

It's travelled far enough already to make the extra sacrifice.

Imagine having an army of specially-trained penguins... they're not just potential house staff you know. Give them AK-47s, and they could be so much more.

Experts said it looks well fed and healthy. They are hardy creatures.

It will be fine.

Well, yeah, but how long will it hang out in New Zealand before it decides to go home? Will it know the way back? How long before it needs to get its stomach pumped from eating sand all day?!

I'm picturing this poor thing dying from dehydration in the hot climate.

Probably just long enough to visit all the usual tourist spots.

True. Maybe he's a Lord of the Rings fan, and has made a once in a lifetime trip.

Thinking about the return journey, it's lucky that penguins swim rather than fly; I heard that there's a volcanic ash cloud suspending all air travel in NZ at the moment...

I tried that back in Miss Chicken's "rule the world thread". It seemed to work for a while, but then they got uppity and wanted me to leave. Called me "white devil" and rejected my GodEmperor-hood.
