Who decides

I was going to ask this somewhere else, but I think I'll ask it here. I remember at Trek conventions there used to be writing workshops that were so packed, I couldn't even get in. I guess there was a writer or two in there listening to stories and pitches or whatnot. It might have been just Richard Arnold, but do they still have that. 45th anniversary is coming up in Parsippany, NJ, of all places and Shore leave in Baltimore, MD? I think I went to that one time even though I live in NY.

Doing a *writers* workshop? You're shitting me!?

I could swear my parrot orders me to work every morning. Well maybe in the next life, definitely. Already being controlled remotely by some kid in China. Got to go..

Seriously, Ann Crispin and others usually conduct writing workshops at Shore Leave every year. Check out their website at shore-leave.com.

Wow, is there a train that goes to Baltimore? It's only like a five hour trip from where we're from, the Pennsylvania/NY area. I did it once listening to some Brahms symphonies. How about Parsippany? Richard Arnold? If he's still alive. A star Trek convention in a toxic wasteland.

Get back to work, Greg!

Geez, who are you, my agent? :)

I promise to write until ten, then I'm going to watch The Killing . . . .

Aren't we the one's who pay your salary (by buying your books) and thus, your bosses?

I know you're just being facetious, but I'd just like to interject that there are few things in the world as irritating as a customer who genuinely believes that he's your boss.

Yes, I believe Amtrak runs a train from NYC to Baltimore. You can probably find more info at the con website.

One caveat: the Hunt Valley Inn is not actually in downtown Baltimore, but out in the boonies. It's a bit of a pricy taxi ride from the train station to the hotel, although there is some sort of light rail you can use instead. Again, check the con website for transportation info.

And I believe the actual hotel is sold out now, although there are some spillover hotels nearby.

So after a long trek, will I be snubbed at the door if this Ann Crispin writng workshop/class is full? What is it, shoreleave.com? Expensivo?

I don't know. I'm not involved with the workships. There may be some sort of pre-registration involved.

Again, all the info, including prices, should be at shore-leave.com.

And if it's booked up, there's always next year.

It might have been just Richard Arnold

RA was the ST Archivist. He wasn't permitted to run writers' workshops nor comment on pitches. (In 20-odd years of annual attendance at Aussie ST conventions, he's never done anything like a pitch session.)

I did hear that Lolita Fatjo, who coordinated the unsolicited scripts program for TNG, was doing some kind of pitch session for fan/wannabe writers at a few US and cruise conventions to demonstrate how the actual pitching progress worked. So too did Michael Pillar, IIRC.

This is the strangest thread I've read in a long time. It's filled with seemingly random collections of stream-of-consciousness ramblings. It's like some kind of Salvador Dali painting done with words.

Who decides?

Who decides that the Titan is exploring the beta quadrant instead of babysitting the Romulans? Who decides that the Borg will be androgynous this year, and co-ed next year? Who draws up the plotlines, controls the characters, handles all of the decisions that happen transparently around us?

Different people, at different times, depending. There is no master plan.

Seriously, some of these ideas are generated by whomever happens to be editor that year, others occur because some random author really wants to write a Gary Seven novel and somehow manages to talk Pocket Books into giving him money for it . . .
