Here is a grab bag of 7 recent sf/f movies that I'm on the fence about. Vote for the ones worth voting for, and feel free to explain, in a spoiler-free way.

Battle: Los Angeles - I'm always up for a good alien invasion flick.

Unknown - I'm always up for a good mindfrak thriller.

Splice - Interesting subject matter...?

Devil - Is the "big secret" worth sitting thru it for? Because if it's not, I'll just go to that movie spoiler site right now.

Limitless - I'm always up for a good mindfrak thriller.

Zombieland - If it's effectively funny/scary, I'm in.

9 - Interested in the visuals.

i went with Zombieland. its got some gore, but mostly its a comedy. think of it as an American version of Shaun of the Dead. Devil, however, really isn't worth watching at all.

I've seen Battle: Los Angeles and Zombieland and liked both.
Zombieland is a very very funny movie.

Battle: Los Angeles is the only one I've seen, and I recommend it. If you go in expecting to see a bunch of army guys fighting aliens with lots of guns and explosions, you will be satisfied.

Haven't seen Devil or Limitless, and I liked Unknown when I saw it, and then, a couple days later, I had a thought that completely ruined the movie for me.

Voted for the others, though.

:techman:

Zombieland was good.

Devil--meh. Maybe worth seeing if you have a particular interest in the subject matter, as I did. It was pretty unmemorable.

Zombieland. Very funny and engaging, and I really don't like zombie movies. I highly recommend this one. It's lots of fun.

Limitless
. Bradley Cooper is awesome in this, and the plot is just so/so. But I really liked the idea that being smart was the ultimate "weapon," so to speak. Some of the visuals are pretty interesting, too. I'd rent or Netflix it when it comes on dvd.

9. I enjoyed this, for the incredible look and style of the world in which these characters live. The ending was a bit off-putting and it is a bit too sad for the young ones to handle--but I think it's a much more mature, animated fantasy that many adults will like.

Unknown
.
Not that great. Had lots of potential but ultimately dropped the ball. I thought it was really average.

Battle: Los Angeles - I'm always up for a good alien invasion flick.

Eh. It's alright. Far too much shakycam and a bit too gung ho patriotic for me.

Unknown - I'm always up for a good mindfrak thriller.

It's essentially
the first hour of the Bourne Identity stretched out over two hours.
If you don't want to read the spoiler, it's a tedious two hours, January Jones is horrifically bland, and Taken was a far more interesting movie.

Splice - Interesting subject matter...?

A stylish and fun monster flick. All the cast members are entertaining, but it gets very, very uncomfortable at times. Definitely not a date movie.

Devil - Is the "big secret" worth sitting thru it for? Because if it's not, I'll just go to that movie spoiler site right now.

No, it's not. Any potential in its premise is wasted in a Shyamalamian shitstorm.

Limitless - I'm always up for a good mindfrak thriller.

Bradley Cooper is infinitely watchable and likable despite being a douchebag. I recommend it for his performance, but the plot didn't do much.

Zombieland - If it's effectively funny/scary, I'm in.

It's not scary, but it is very funny. Not Shaun of the Dead funny, but still funny. Has a very memorable cameo.

9 - Interested in the visuals.

The visuals are nice, but the film drags too long despite being really short. Rango was a better animated film.

Wow, and here Zombieland was the one that had my finger hovering over the nuke-it X in my Netflix queue because for the life of me, I couldn't remember why I put it there. :rommie:

That's the disadvantage of loading up on movies before they hit the theaters. By the time DVDs are released, the whole list is one  after another.

Splice was fucked up shit.

In a good or bad way?

Based on early returns, Devil gets the boot. I read the spoiler for it - eh, nothing about it sounds particularly clever. It's not enough to just have a secret twist ending.

It's not enough to just have a secret twist ending.

A twist movie should still be a satisfactory movie without relying on the twist.

If it's a really good twist, that can be enough. But Devil doesn't have a really good twist - no cleverness, no irony. So forget that.

Everything else has at least one vote except Unknown which I might see anyway because I like Liam Neeson. :D
