Ah, that bastion of gamer-geekdom, the Guardian.

    yeah...

Most reviews are giving it more middling scores - 5-6 out of 10.

I suspect the problem is basically that as vaporware it was Legend, as an actual game it's just another shooter...

    True.
If that gamed had been released on due date it would have scored a 5/5. But by today's standards, it definitely deserves a 2/5 score.

But that's not the reason why I play DNF. ;)

actually, it was the Daily Mirror. they said that whilst the genre had advanced - like Bioshock giving you deep worlds, COD give you bigass setpieces and (another game i forget what) creating great characters, this was a game stuck in the 1990s. and the graphics are shite too.

^You know I always find it mildly amusing when people cite Bioshock as a measure of how games have changed in the last decade...considering it didn't exactly do anything that System Shock 2 didn't already do 15 or so years ago.

As for Duke...not to sound negative but I'm honestly not expecting anything more than a mediocre (if amusing) shooter. Any creative endeavour that takes several orders of magnitude longer than it should have just screams of a seriously lacked of focus.

Only three "problems" with the game for me:

    1) It's ridiculous linear. Go from checkpoint to checkpoint without deviating. This was the fun thing with 3D. You had a lot of places to go even if you had to get the key cards to go forward in the end (or you got the Jetpack and flew directly).. :p

    2) These scripted parts when you have to stand still while some idiot kid wants your autograph (this could be rectified with a "punch the little bastard" option).

    3) Two gun limit. Ok, you find more guns when needed, but the fun part with 3D was after all to go bananas with the different weapons. Now the risk is high that you keep the most effective weapons despite them not being the most fun.

Yeah, I probably would have been more likely to pick it up maybe 5 years ago. But now? Not so much. I'm not so much into FPS games anymore anyway, and it seems really mediocre, especially for the amount of time it spent in development.

But what strikes me in all this is 3DRealm's perfectionism. It's quite ironic, as I think that's what actually held up the game the most in all this due to the multiple restarts on the project. It really makes me wonder what the game would have been like in 2001 at the time the first or second trailer were released. It seemed to have more character back then. I really have to wonder if they kept the old guy with the donkey in the game or if they scrapped that.

What might interest people is that an indie team has managed to get permission to remake Duke Nukem 3D and they're even getting help from Gearbox with it. A test trailer was released and it looks pretty good. They even managed to get John St John, the voice of Duke, to do some new lines:

I've been looking forward to this game since it was definitively announced, and now that it's here, based on EVERYTHING I'm hearing about it, I've kind of lost interest. It went from a "must have" to a "bargain bin only" kind of game. Still I assume curiousity will get the better of me eventually, but I sure won't pay $60 for it.

Joystiq gave it a 2/5 as well, with many of the same criticisms.

I'll pick this up tomorrow if Walmart has it since that's the only place to buy PC games around my home. I've waited too long not to have it on release day.

I will for sure. I'm not really expecting much from it honestly. So much hype after all these years. But it is Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem has strippers and guns so I should be adequately entertained. :techman:

Well, bought the game but forgot my Steam password and never bothered to setup up a secret question apparently. (I haven't used Steam in over a year.) So I get to wait for the Steam folks to reset my account. I miss the old days when you could buy a game, enter the CD key, and get to playing...
