Do you remember joining TrekBBS?

I joined on July 1, 2004. That was the summer after I graduated high school and I was laying around the house dreading my upcoming move to university. I found out about the site from my boyfriend at the time, who helped introduce me to TNG. I fell in love with the series instantly and read some of the discussions in that forum. Ultimately I decided to join because I wanted to read the Miscellaneous forum, and at that time it was invisible to non-members. I didn't think I'd ever actually post though, so I chose the first words that popped into my head for a username, YeahMe. I couldn't help but want to post when I got into Misc. I've continued to post here long after that relationship ended because the discussions here have continued to be interesting. I still love TNG and now Enterprise, but I rarely post in those forums...not sure why really. I don't think my ex really posts here anymore, I haven't seen him around in quite some time.

So I guess it's been just about 7 years...crazy. A lot has changed in that time. I mean, I have a Master's degree, I started dating a new guy that I've been with for 5 years now, and I'm in a city I never thought I'd move to. But some things haven't changed since that summer, like being unemployed and bored out of my mind.

I remember most of it. I was searching for Star Trek wallpapers, and had come across TrekPlanet. There was a link from TrekPlanet to TrekBBS, and so sometime in late, late 2001, I signed up. I only posted a handful of times, and went to pursue other things for a while. When I came back, the Great Server Crash of 2002 had happened, and so I rejoined in December of that year. I have posted a couple of times since then.

Oh, and I'm still searching for Star Trek wallpapers.

I lurked for a small amount of time before joining and made my first thread about Voyager's worst episodes (in April 2001). I used to be Year of Hell for a few years before regenerating into Candlelight after a tragic blow up doll accident.

November 2007, my freshman year in college. I had lurked here for a few years, mainly looking at the Caption This! threads and the Five Minute Enterprise. When I went off to college, I tried installing Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates on my computer, but was having issues. I decided that if I could get help anywhere, this would be it, so I joined and immediately posted a thread for my issue. Someone (I think goldbug) responded with a solution and I, not really considering that typed word doesn't really carry any inflection, responded that I had already tried it in a way that apparently sounded kinda snotty. And for some reason, you guys have let me stick around since then.

Amazingly, yes.

Ok, it was almost year ago but I was on so much anesthetics that I'm surprised I was lucid enough to.

I joined while in labor with my son.

I don't remember how I came across it but I did. I do remember that my contractions were four minutes and twenty-six seconds apart though.

I guess it's because I only joined a few months ago. I didn't know how long the forums had been going for at the time. I like meeting the longer standing members.

I don't. I think I was drunk at the time.

Has this actually changed at any point in the intervening years?

My story of joining is lost in the Mists of Time, an event spoken of only in hushed tones under the cover of darkness, for fear of waking evil forces.

Actually, I was referred here from another Trek board nearly 12 years ago, but that's not as interesting. 12 years... that's just unhealthy...

Yeah, about 12 years.

I've been here for 5 years.

Welcome

No recollection. My profile says March 10, 2000 and I can't think of any specific event that would have led me here. My best guess is just a general search for Trek info.

I remember when I started lurking - summer 2001. I was still in Public Accounting at that time, and in that biz, 85% of our business is done between Jan 1 and April 15. Summers are fairly slow...and I was mucking about on the net one day, and found this place. I was looking to read about (and possibly post about) VOY, which had just ended....and this place came up in an internet search.

Of course, one of the main reasons I lurked for a few months before joining (maybe June to August, when I couldn't take it anymore and finally joined) is because at the time, the VOY forum (and the DS9 forum as well, to a lesser extent) was like the wild west. It was a scary place indeed. "Hostile environment" is not exaggerating at all; that's what it was. Flaming, trolling? Hourly events back then. Snarky remarks were more the rule than the exception. In the end, the main reason I joined was because the two mods in VOY at the time - Mxy and da Woim, did a pretty good job of keeping control of the place, all things considered. And da Woim was a DS9 fan (which I was, of course) and so didn't let the trolling of DS9 fans in there get too out of hand either. Further, Jammer, who was the sole DS9 mod, was pretty hands off...but did turn up to kick some ass if need be. Although the Niners were reasonably good at ignoring trolls, for some reason, most of the time.

Still...there was lots of tension in and between those two forums at that time...and I spent a while deciding if I wanted to step into the middle of it. And reading TNZ didn't make me feel any better.

I remember the day I finally joined, I was almost terrified to post...because I knew that (*gasp*) liking BOTH DS9 and VOY was going to be an unpopular viewpoint. Back then, that was nearly unheard of on this board. Being reasonable? Who needed 'reasonable' when trolling and borderline trolling where the main sports in those two forums?

Yeah....TrekBBS was not the warm and fuzzy place it is now, back in 2001. That's for sure.

You know, I like all the trek series for the most part (Some more than others) and I still think that's an unpopular opinion. ;)

Kind of wish I was here for the Voyager/DS9 Feud and when REZA and TrekTonight were at their prime. I've already said my favorite time here was the year the DS9 DVDs came out, but I'm sure that time would have also been a blast.

The first time I joined it was the summer of 2003. I was fairly active for about 5 months when for some reason my account was closed. I sent a message to site administrator, but she didn't know what happened. Anyway, I was really busy at the time, so I didn't rejoin.
I finally decided to join again in November.

No...that year that the DS9 DVDs came out was awesome. That was the best year in the DS9 forum - certainly my own favorite year. We had such a great time! :techman:

I don't know if you'd have liked the time period you refer to as much as you think. You have always been a kind and mild mannered kind of guy....and those were NOT kind and mild mannered days. And although all you hear about are the DS9 fans who trolled VOY, the reverse was also very much true - there were some VOY fans who regularly trolled DS9... In fact, that was the main reason I was made a mod, to help Jammer out with that.

You have never struck me as the kind of guy who loves to read a lot of trolling, borderline trolling, and nasty remarks in general. But that was really common in the VOY forum and DS9 forum back then. You have probably heard about the rape thread over the years. That was DS9 forum, circa 2001. :(

Not nearly as much witty repartee as we like to remember, unfortunately. ;)

I finally remember how I came across this!

I was on a bit of a Voyager kick the last month of my pregnancy, nostalgia of my pre-teen and teen years of watching it, and I remember I was trying to look for something but I came across this forum and I made an account immediately. I lurked for about a week afterwards since I had a newborn to care for and only started posting in earnest this past December, maybe November.

But I've heard about those DS9/VOY feud days, and I for one am very happy I was not here then, I would have been kicked off in a week and I know it. I argue too much, and I am very territorial.
