Cult films that BADLY need a remake...

I think a sci-fi musical could be done well. And if we're talking about films that could be improved on in a remake, Just Imagine! then, could be one such film.

In terms of the sf musical, there was REPO! The Genetic Opera a few years ago, but despite it being eternally available for free on demand, I've yet to see it. There's also The Phantom Empire, a serial from 1935 starring Gene Autry. Supposedly it combines the musical, the western, and sf, although I confess I haven't seen it, either. Beyond that, it's a pretty empty genre. Would Dr. Horrible count?

What about The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

What about The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

I'm ashamed to admit I've never actually seen it.

Cox has a point. No discussion of the neglible thing that is sci-fi musicals is complete without "Science Fiction, Double Feature":

The Phantom Empire sounds interesting, also. I'll add that to my mental list of 'watch in event of miracle of being able to obtain', along with Just Imagine.

I wonder how that would work in modern times. It seems very rooted in that 70's disintrested nihilism. Still, it'd be interesting.
A remake of Dark Star might have worked better back in the ’90s, with all those movies about Generation-X “slacker” types. Don’t know how well it would go over now.

I’ve seen it. Believe me, it doesn’t deserve a remake.

Wouldn't remaking a cult film kill the mystique of it? Part of the charm of films like that is that they're old and weird. :p
The old film remains old and weird, in fairness. It gets a higher profile, maybe, but that's about it.
Exactly. Like Little Shop of Horrors.

Here’s one I’ve always felt deserves a remake: Creation of the Humanoids.
I recently re-watched 'Creation of the Humanoids' and it is a fun flick. It would be worth a look in an updated form, just as long as they don't move into something like 'Blade Runner' which has many of the same themes.

I've never seen it either, nor do I ever want to, and I'm *not* ashamed to admit that.

As a cornerstone of cult, midnight movies, I should probably see it at some point. But I can understand it not being everyone's cup of tea (I may not even care for it -- but, we'll see).
I saw it once in college at a midnight showing. I went based on the costumed folks going to see it. The interactive crowd made it enjoyable. A great part of the fun is the crowd participation. I wouldn't enjoy it as a film to only watch. Also, it's a musical, I can't stand musicals by and large.

The thing with Rocky Horror is that the film is only part of the experience. It really needs to be seen with an audience to get the full effect.

I've heard that, which is one of the reasons I haven't seen it yet.

On other hand, it's not a bad idea to familiarize yourself with the show before doing the whole Rocky Horror experience. Otherwise, you may get frustrated if you're actually trying to listen to the dialogue and pay attention to the story . . . !

"Hey, why are you throwing rice? I'm trying to watch the movie!"

Best to learn the story first.

Its a bit like MSTK in tha respect. If you go into it expecting to hear all the dialog, you'll be a bit frustrated.

It was years before I saw RHPS without an audience. (VHS) Its not a bad film by its self.

Speaking of genre musicals, there's also Phantom of the Paradise, although that's probably more horror than sf.

I can't help smiling at the thought of Greg trying to watch the movie while all these hooligans keep talking, dancing and throwing stuff. "Will you kids keep it down? I'm trying to watch the movie!"

Though by the time we slip into horror, there's a lot more to choose from, musical-wise.

The Paul Williams connection has kept me away.

But he was an oranguatuan in a Planet of the Apes movie! That gives him automatic geek cred.
Speaking of Planet of the Apes and sci-fi musicals I feel semi-obligated to mention the Simpsons' riff on the idea of a Planet of the Apes musical.

I confess: the first time I saw the movie, I had that exact frustrated moviegoer experience. Years later, after memorizing the soundtrack album, I saw the show again and was able to get into the spirit of things.
