Bye-Bye Ponds?

What the Hell does the source of the financial problems have to do with anything? Less money is less money whether its because they're spending more on effects/location shoots, or because they're not getting as much as they did. The end result is the same; lay off the extra effects and unnecessary location shoots.

Clyde Lander and Rani what's her name.

Whilst its a nice idea, I'm not sure a Executive Producer maintaining his mark on the show would really do it by casting two actors cast and characters created by his predecessor.

I'd be quite happy if they alternated a 13 episode series with a year of 3 specials like they did with Tennant's final year. It gives the actors more time to do other work and might increase the longevity of each incarnation even if the number of episodes end up being slightly lower. I prefer the longer stories, personally - an episode doesn't feel complete to me if we don't have at least one scene involving running up a corridor and/or around a quarry. I think that we may overestimate the number of appearances made by the older companions because the stories were spread out over more episodes. If you look at them in terms of the number of 'adventures' they had, then the current assistants are about the same, especially as they are more likely to reappear in later stories. Plus we do get assistants appearing and disappearing part way through the series (Jack, Rory, Mickey) albeit so far they have been secondary assistants. I'd really like to see Wilf again actually. A scene between Alex Kingston and Bernard Cribbins would be awesome.

Personally I really hope we don't have a specials year again, there seemed nothing particularly special about it, we just had a random Easter episode and an even more random November episode.

Fine. Let's call it a theoretical spoiler.

Either way, I'm getting tired of this constant rotation of people in the nuWho series. I don't know how the original series was, but I'd really like it if the same Doctor and the same companion could stay together for more than 2 years before something happens.

In the classic series, it was extremely rare for a companion to last more than 2 years. Many of them lasted quite less than that. And only 2 of the Doctors lasted longer than 3 years.

Yeah, I think the only real exceptions to the rule have been Jaime, Sarah Jane, Romana (If you count both incarnations as the same companion) K-9 (Ditto) and Tegan. Then of course there's recurring characters like the Brigadier +the other UNIT guys, as well as Jack and River, who don't appear in every story.

One qualification, now that I think about it: the early seasons of the classic Who were much longer than the current 13 hours or so. In other words, the great Ian and Barbara, while they were only there for a year and a bit, were actually in many more hours of Doctor Who than any later companion that lasted for a full 2 years.

True that. "The End of Time" was the only one with any real epic heft to it. "The Next Doctor" had a lot of potential but totally runs off the rails at the end. "Planet of the Dead" would be a great regular episode but isn't special enough to be a special. "Waters of Mars" just gets worse each time I see it.

Even the other Christmas specials I'm not so crazy about. "A Christmas Carol" is the only one I would really rank above so-so.

:(.... Sucks if this turns out to be true... I loves me some Amelia Pond... She's the perfect foil for Smith's Doctor...

What are you doing next?
"I am playing Jean Shrimpton in a BBC4 drama We’ll Take Manhattan but I have just literally gone from Doctor Who to that so I haven’t had a chance to sit and have a think. I actually would really like to go home to Scotland for a little while and reflect on what has happened and then decide what my next move is, but I don’t know what that is yet."

Of course, is she was spending another nine months shooting DW she wouldn't have to be trying to work out her next move...

Other than wishful thinking on the part of some, did anyone truly believe that Gillan and Darvill would be on the series for three seasons? I'll be sorry to see Darvill and, to a lesser extent, Gillan go, but two years is a good run for companions.

Writing of wishful thinking, I'm hoping both of them are around as long as Matt Smith is The Doctor. Even if this is their last season, I think it has been a great run.

My thoughts exactly.

I like Rory a lot more than Amy - I don't dislike her, but I won't be that sad to see her go.

I also like Rory more than Amy. In fact, the only companion I've liked in the revived series has been Donna. Well, and Rory but he kind of "stumbled" into the role of a companion. He wouldn't have been if not for Amy.

And Matt Smith's in Hollywood this week, taking meetings on future projects.
Cue "the sky is falling, Matt is leaving" paranoia.
Ever since it was revealed earlier this week that Mark Gatiss will be in episode thirteen, I haven't quite been able to shake the idea that Smith might regenerate in episode thirteen with Gatiss as the twelfth Doctor.

And I think Gatiss would be a terrible choice. All the things that Eric Saward thought about Colin Baker's fitness for the role of the Doctor would apply to Gatiss.

To quote the tenth Doctor, "Don't you dare"

It is indeed a horrid thought. Of the three episodes he's penned for the series, I've only liked one. As for his acting... no thanks.
