Oh yeah, I took no issue and didn't think there was one. Just a comparison I hadn't thought about. I'm a fan of both bands and think they're great at what they each do.

Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm
Ah yes, the man in black. Haven't actually heard much of him aside from the real famous songs and that NIN cover. My first thought is that this would be a fun song to dance to at a wedding. I was at a friend's wedding this past October and it was southern style, from the food to decoration, but the biggest downside was that the music was all Usher and Beiber-type tunes. This would've fit much better. 7/10


R.E.M. - Monty Got a Raw Deal
You know, I'm not sure why I don't listen to REM more than I have. I like all of the songs of theirs that I've heard--albeit, again, it's been their more well known songs. This song really is just about everything I like in my music: melodic, slightly haunting, lyrics that tell a story, and not formulaic. 10/10

Great Big Sea - Captain Kidd
Speak of the devil(s)! I know this song well, having sung it at the top of my lungs with friends while driving down some highway. I don't think it's their best, but it's a good example of their music. Now I feel a bit bad for taking the reviews, as it'd be nice if more non-Canadians got to hear some Great Big Sea. 8/10

1. Carelessness by Fair
I liked this one. There is something sort of retro about it. Good and interesting lyrics that have message. Sound wise it is both relaxing and heavy at the same time..sounds odd, but that is how I felt when listening this.
Was that an acoustic guitar there or did I hear wrong?

2. Tilly and the Wall - Rainbows in the Dark
Hmm..I wanted to like this but did not. They sing and play well...but I guess I wanted this to be more melodic.
The slower part in the end saved much, could have used one more in the middle maybe.
I will check out more of their songs, maybe I find something more to my liking from them.

3. Massive Attack - Teardrop
I liked this best of the three. Very beautiful, haunting and dream like The singer had very good vocals, also. The music video was certainly creative

Yes, I'm sixteen, and yes, I like modern music, but actually I like all kinds of genres of music. Maybe I'll try some.. different stuff in future- because I most likely have it.

Well, I suspected you were young - implying my opinions were irrelevant while coming down just as hard or harder on the next poster yourself sort of gave it away. But I just wanted to be sure.

And for the record, I like modern music too. I may love grunge...but that doesn't mean I stopped listening to the radio and buying CDs the day Kurt Cobain died.

Anyway, you have made it pretty clear that you now want this thread to be about new pop, hip hop, and light alt rock that is mostly on the radio right now. And that 'fogies' like me who no longer attend 'dance parties' (but who have been posting in this thread for MONTHS, by the way) are irrelevant.

But just remember this: just because a band is new doesn't make them good...let alone original. And just because a song is popular doesn't make it good. Or original. The music industry, after all, is a force that can make a completely unoriginal and mediocre-at-best band like Nickelback hugely popular. 'Popularity', I don't think, is a very reliable barometer of quality or originality, in other words. Especially since most people are pretty much sheep.

I'm just sayin' - dig deeper than the bands that have been popular in the last year or two and whose singles have more than a million hits on YouTube.

Or not. Guess it won't matter to me, since I've not been posting in this thread recently and might not again for some time.

I never "came down hard" on anyone. These are just my opinions, I never said anything about your opinions being irrelevant. If it came across that way, I'm sorry- but frankly, at the moment I have no idea what the hell you're going on about.

Firstly, I don't want to make this thread fully about "New music" and since you know nothing about me, I don't think it's fair to say that I must attend 'dance' parties. The music in which your refering to is simply the ones that I chose to post, for you or any other poster to rate. I rate other songs that you or anyone else posts fairly, by my standards. That follows the rules of this "game", yes?

So you think I like all songs that are spewed out from the music industry. I like a wide range of music- not all music. There are several new songs that I hate, and plenty more I dislike, or feel indifferent to.

I've got plenty of music like that. I have albums that have barely- and in some cases, never charted. You really think I'm shallow, and just lap all the new stuff up. I took music as a GCSE a couple of years ago and studied classical, foreign, and 80's/90's music in depth.

That's you're choice, but don't get all touchy and blame me for it. You know, I don't care that much about posting in this thread, I just wanted unbiased opinions to rate songs that I like, but I haven't had much of that, most of it has been from one end of the scale or the other. I'm perfectly happy to leave it here, and just not post in this thread again.

What I've even done a couple of times is grabbed a song off the release schedule that I've only listened to once or twice and posted it here. I've made some good discoveries myself that way.

I've only rarely picked out songs that are I think played on the radio a lot. (I don't listen to the radio that much.)
It doesn't matter if I know the songs, it's for other posters. I'd already said that I'd try some different styles in future, which I have done, although half have been geolocked it seems.

My problem with PKTrekGirl's post was it made too many assumptions directly about me.

I'm not going to be posting in this thread to review, seeing as the songs I post, and my opinions don't seem to be overly popular. I'll leave it for a while at least.

This is how it works:
Post THREE urls of three different songs (not the names or artists of the songs).

Next person (completely!) listens to and then reviews the songs: first write the name of the track, then a little blurb about each one discussing whether you liked it or not and why, knew it or not, and if you think you might want to hear more from the same artist or not. And anything else you want to write pertaining to that song/artist. If you want to you can also rate it on a scale of one to ten or whatever.

This person (the reviewer) then posts three urls of three different songs (without the names or artists).

Next persons reviews and posts 3.

Continue to infinity.

Hopefully you'll find some new interesting stuff, and be able to show the world how much you know about music.

Note: the music can be popular or unpopular, the poster doesn't even necessarily have to like it, and the songs can be from any genre or time period.

Yeah, PKTrekGirl, I don't know where all of that came from either. The thing I enjoy about this thread is the variety of music that comes from the diversity of people posting in it. Jaytrek--or anyone else--can post nothing but auto-tuned pop from the past six months and I wouldn't really care as long as you're posting grunge and alternative and whatever else strikes your fancy. Whether a person wants to be diverse or not in their own selections is up to them, they can be reviewed on that. But the thread loses something when other people stop trying to honesty share their tastes as well.

I must've missed the part where he said anyone who posted "old" music is irrelevant.

"Love Story" - Taylor Swift

This one in particular bothers me, because the lyrics seem like their based around a complete misreading of Romeo & Juliet... 3/10

I've said this before on the board, but I maintain that while, yes, it's a misinterpretation of Romeo and Juliet, I think it's an artifact of those two becoming more symbolic of a general-purpose "two lovers that have a really difficult time making things work" in our culture. Also, I like to think she's a Dire Straits fan.

Ani Lorak - Shady Lady
Never heard of this woman before, but she's got a good song and, to be completely shallow for a moment, she's very hot which often helps with popularity. Comments seem to indicate it's a Eurovision song. Anyway, as to the song, it's nothing terribly complicated as far as the beat goes, it's a nice driving dance song with good loud pop production. What sets this song aside from, say, a Kesha (aside from being legitimately sexy and not skeezy) is that this woman's a good singer with a strong, powerful voice. Not quite on the level of, say, Adele (has "Rolling in the Deep" been posted yet?), but approaching that. The content of the song is nothing really special, but it's very enjoyable. Good for
an 8/10 I'll say.

Poli Genova - One Lifetime Is Not Enough
Comments indicate this is a Eurovision song too, do I detect a theme? Not complaining though. Instead of being dancey and energetic, this song's very melancholy and a bit moody. The music is low-key piano and guitar work, but very pleasant and definitely works with the singer to generate that feeling of longing. It went in a slightly different direction for a few seconds around the two minute mark and, essentially, got more bombastic. Which at first I wasn't sure about but it really works. Poli's got a nice voice herself, and I definitely enjoyed this song. Melancholy always works for me so I'll give it an 8/10 as well.

Hanna Pakarinen - Leave Me Alone
I should start paying more attention to Eurovsision, is what I'm learning! Ukranian, then somewhere in Eastern Europe, and now Finland. This song's a powerful rock piece, with good rocking guitar work and a lovely voice singing it all. It's a little more operatic than, say, Joan Jett, but not to the point of Evanescence. The energy's definitely flowing through this piece, and the anger mixed with sadness comes through well. This one I'm giving a 9/10.

Funny, I finally have a little time to myself to rejoin this thread. Consider this thread resurrected!

I hope PKTrekgirl and JayTrek keep posting. Despite my occasional criticism of her song choices, I think PKTrekgirl demonstrates great taste in music, and I love reading her informed posts - I always learn something new. And JayTrek's contributions are absolutely worthwhile even if they aren't my or other people's cup of tea. What I'm seeing in this thread is that pesky generation gap I've heard about my whole young person life, but as I creep toward the big 3-0, I'm transitioning from younger listener targeted by mainstream production and distribution demographics to bygone fogeydom (lulz). I'm hearing some distressingly hipsterish implications in the arguements here - an idea that exclusivity is inextricably linked to quality. I dislike most of what is on the radio (and dammit, I've earned the right by age alone!) but I don't find new, popular music inherently bad. OK, autotune needs to die in fire. I'll concede that.

In short, I've fallen out of touch with top 40, but I'm only now realizing it. I personally find it interesting to hear what those damned kids are listening to while loitering on my lawn, and check it against my own tastes that have already been forged and cooled in my own formative years. That said, god willing I will never stop discovering new music. May my tastes keep evolving.

Speaking of criticisms, Imma gettin' to that now.

The Kinks - Celluloid Heroes

Nice. I'm not familiar with The Kinks outside of their big radio hits. Frankly, I think I like this quieter, more sentimental side more than the umpteenth billionth spin of "Lola". I would listen to this again, definitely.

I lol'ed at the explicit lyrics and clever editing, in no small part because Taylor Swift gets on my last nerve, especially when I'm on an overcrowded bus just trying to get home from a bad day at work & her videos are screeching over the onboard monitors.

A novelty and a giggle, but not much more.

One of my favorite songs from this iconic duo. I've had a musical crush on them since I was like, 5. The singing in rounds still gets me every time. Gorgeous piece of songwriting and craftsmanship.

KMFDM - Sucks
Umm.... I hate to do this again, but I really don't like this kind of music. Sorry! The guitar's nice enough, but... ow? I'm getting a headache just thinking about the voice . 3/10

ICP - Chicken Huntin'
Mmm... Chicken... I like chicken... I like songs about random foods, and although the vocals are a bit shouty, they're not screamy, so it makes a nice balance. I wouldn't normally get a song like this, but as much as I hate to admit it, I really like this. The lyrics are a bit creepy at some points, but in a way it's quite funny. 7.5/10

Pearl Jam - Daughter
Hmm. Nice album cover .
But seriously, it's really nice. My only problem is the accent that shows through - I don't want to offend anyone, but I prefer it when the accent gets lost in the song. Still, it's quite a nice mix of country and.. rock? Maybe? Anyhow, it's quite nice, and I liked the sound of it when it first started, and first impressions are always good. 7/10

Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxo Beat

I quite like the beat of this, and her accent in the song is really nice. I didn't much like the random guy in it.... what is he actually doing XD
Regardless it's a fun meaningless catchy dancy song.

I LOVE THIS SONG! Always have done, always will do. The vocals, the melody that is both soothing and somewhat melancholy but then fun and optimistic.

I'm not in love with this song, but I will always really like it. Can't even explain it properly. It wasn't as good the Don't Look Back In Anger but they were similar sort of songs.

Secret 시크릿 - "Madonna"

K-Pop, eh? Yeah, not really a genre I know. At all. It's not bad for what it is, I guess, but it's a little too dance-pop for my tastes, without any real edge to it. Catchy, but hard to get into for me. 5/10

2NE1 - "Lonely"

Right, more K-Pop then. I like this one better than the last one, for sure... it's got more of an acoustic feel to it, and seems less-manufactured. The harmonies and everything are nice, but nothing about it really stands out melodically for me. Gets a bit repetitive as it goes on, too.

Incidentally, I have to say I don't understand the why so many K\J-Pop songs seem to have English chorus and verses in Korean or Japanese. You see that kind of thing occasionally with Western artists, but not as frequently as you do in Asian pop.

Celtic Woman - "Níl Sé'n Lá"

Ahh, Celtic music! This is something that speaks much more to my ancestral roots (I am always drawn towards the sound of bagpipes). I've never heard this particular group before, but they're pretty good. Lovely harmonies, and a beautiful arrangement of what I'm assuming is a traditional song? 8/10
