TrekBBS vs. the Music

Cast of Glee, "Loser Like Me".

There's no doubt that the cast of Glee are talented, but the only problem I have with this song is it sounds like pretty much every other song I've heard from Glee and High School Musical. Most Glee songs are covers, so this is probably one too, but I don't recognize it. I think what makes this one work is the enthusiasm of the performers.

It isn't a cover actually, it was from a special 'Original Song' episode. :borg:

The one time where Glee make a song that isn't a cover (and about 4 other original songs, but this is the best known). I like it, like you said, you can feel the energy of the performers through the song.

They should do more originals. I have to confess the covers that I do recognize I haven't liked, so if they come in with a clean slate more often, that would be, for me, a good thing.

Glee is, however, to be commended for helping keep the notion of permanent physical music media alive, even though it sometimes feels like half of HMV is made up of Glee CDs these days.

OK, my three.

When viewing this first one keep in mind this was recorded in 1964 and filmed in 1965. You might not realize it:

(couldn't resist - and if you want to see a version you may have never seen before - complete with both Hollys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLJanSkYAso )

Alex

1) Billie Davis - Watcha Gonna Do (1965)
great vid, nice slice of 60s pop. Love retro, so no problems. Not best I've heard (echoes of 'Fever') but great Hammond riff...

2)Texas - I Don't Want A Lover
Not a fan, but catchy. Sharleen Spiteri has great presence, even if the 'Scots-singing-Yank' thing a bit overdone...

3) Red Dwarf lot - Tongue-Tied.
Hmmm...not a fan of series or comedy records in general so I'll have to give this a pass...

Shame. I'd have given it a 10/10 ;) -- it's Red Dwarf. The only thing I dislike about it is the fact that it's no longer producing :p.

(Youtube Videos.)

Cillia Black - Love Of The Loved
It might just be the quality but the genre of music and the instruments used in this style and quality of sound are also rather.. awful? I'll give it credit for her voice, seeing it is quite nice, from what I can tell. 4/10

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On/ What's Happening
It sounds OK. Not something I'd regualrly listen to, but at least something I can appreciate :). He has a good voice, so I'll be giving this a 6/10

Dev ft. The Cataracs
I know this one. Fairly well as it happens. It's repeatative, but good repeatative. I hadn't seen the video before, and to be honest it's a little weird, but hey; I've seen GaGa, so I'm not complaining. This kind of music is definately aquired taste of some sort, but I've already "aquired" it :). 10/10

You must have missed the news that they're filming a new season this fall for broadcast in 2012.
What I like about the formal video, which was made when a new recording of the song became a big hit on the UK charts several years after it was debuted on TV (and which I only saw for the first time after posting the original link for this thread) was that they got both actors who played Holly together to take part in it. It was made around 1993 or 94, so that would have been either during or around the time the show went on its 3-year hiatus.

Are you going to post songs, Jaytrek? I'd be up for another go, but I need something to review, first. :p

"Unity" - Besuries

Well, the best thing I can say about this song is that seems to be in support of the Japanese earthquake. Beyond that, it's pretty bland and repetitive, and I can't say I'm a big fan of the religious overtones throughout the song. It's not the worst song I've ever heard, but it's not something I'd particularly care to hear again. 3/10

Second song doesn't work in Canada.

"Cooler Than Me" - Mike Posner

Gah, Top 40 pop. *runs and flails for a bit* To be honest, it's hard to say much about it, because I can't really find much about it that makes it stand out from anything else in the Top 40 these days. Vaguely electronic, with vaguely breathy vocals, and insipid lyrics. Not my style at all. 2/10

And I have to second PKTrekGirl's question. I mean, I don't mean to be super-harsh or anything, but we clearly have pretty different tastes. :p

^^ The 2nd was "How To Save A Life" by "The Fray" - rather well known.. I think?
^ Okay. I can no longer resist asking. How old are you?

Well since you ask so nicely....
Yes, I'm sixteen, and yes, I like modern music, but actually I like all kinds of genres of music. Maybe I'll try some.. different stuff in future- because I most likely have it.

Rush - Tom Sawyer
This song is enjoyable. I think a rather nice background song that you can partially listen to, and suprisingly relaxing for this kind of genre. The vocals are a bit quiet, but it's nice enough :). 7/10

Carbon Leaf - The Boxer
This is ok, it's not the kind of thing I'd listen to, but it doesn't make my ears bleed, which is also a good start. It's alright, but my first reaction is really . 5/10

My Morning Jacket - The Way That He Sings
Very 80's, this kind of music sends me to sleep (which isn't always a bad thing :p). It's nice, but not great. Very, very backgroundy- it's quite hard to hear what they're singing. 5/10

Noah and the Whale - L.I.F.E. G.O.E.S. O.N.
Interesting band name... obnoxious song title. ;-) The song is quite nice though. Quiet, pleasantly energetic alt-rock. The song doesn't have anything really stand-out-y about it, but the instrument work is nice and the singer does a good job - just a bit quirky, kinda like The Wallflowers lead singer, but melodious. I liked the way the chorus did the "make it sound like lots of people are singing" bit. Mild, pleasant, happy listening I think pretty much sums this song up. It kinda stuck in my head longer than I expected too. Enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't specifically seek out more by them. 7/10

Song 2 was geolocked, sorry.

Olly Murs - Heart on My Sleeve
Another band and song I don't recognize. Where Noah and the Whale's song was ultimately upbeat, Olly Murs brings on the melancholy. Which is always good by me, although this might be a little too whiny for my tastes ultimately. I prefer more broody. That said, the simple and clean music works to this song's advantage, and the singer's appropriately plaintive and sings the song well. The music gets a bit bigger, swelling as it goes along, and I find myself ultimately more interested in what it's doing as opposed to the singer. Not bad overall, let's give it a 7/10.

As Jaytrek's brother, and based in the UK anyway, I can tell you that the 2nd song was Mumford & Sons - The Cave. Nice indie song, fairly epic in places.

Ok, time to review again...

Lea Michele - On My Own
Having been familiar with Michele of Glee, and appreciating her voice, it's nice to see her do something else. The song was beautiful. Really beautiful. I enjoyed that. There's something about her voice, that just seems so vulnerable, and she manages to convey that perfectly. 9/10

Doomsday - Murray Gold
Ah, Doctor Who soundtrack. I really respect Murray Gold, awesome music writer. My personal favourites are All The Strange, Strange Creatures, The Doctor Forever, This Is Gallifrey and Every Star, Every Planet (only ones I really know very well, tbh)
I do remember Doomsday being on the show, now I think of it, and in a lot of places, it is beautiful, with that almost classic 'swaying' ooohhing. The piece doesn't tend to go anywhere really though, and I don't think it's up there with the ones I mentioned. 6/10

Youth Of The Nation - P.O.D
Nice rocky sound. At times, almost venturing into hip-hop. Actually, wait a minute, that is hip-hop. The chorus is nice, if a bit repetitive.
These guys sound like an interesting band. Wiki calls them alternative, but if they're doing what sounds to me like rapping in their songs, than they're very alternative at the very least. Anyway, I enjoyed the song. 7/10

1. The Sound Of Arrows - Nova

Never heard before. Sounds like electronica/dance music. Video is a bit strange...but not too bad. C-Average/OK.

2. Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

Never heard before. Is there a word for this type of music? It seems like Beck but more pop sounding. I wasn't feeling it. D-Bad.

3. Friendly Fires - Live Those Days Tonight

Haven't heard before. Seems like dance/pop...kinda funky. Not feeling it either...but it is ok. C-Average/OK.

Yeah, they're a good band, though every time I hear one of their songs, I can't help but wonder what lost Great Big Sea album they're from.

Dishwalla - Colide
Really quite nice. Not too shouty, not boring, and a very steady, very good melody. 8/10

Fuel - Shimmer
(Was blocked in my country, but I found the title with "Youtube Converter" and now I've got it up on another video :))

This continues a lot on the same theme, and I found half way through I was only half listening to it. Still, there's not much not to like about this, so I'm giving it a 7/10

Pro-pain - Make War (Not Love)

I'll be honest with you, when I saw the artist name and the song title I started to get a little worried .
Then I heard the... screaming? How can anyone enjoy that kind of singing? Sorry, not my type at all, even though it's got a nice guitar backing, the voice sounds horrible. Pure evil even- which is suggested anyway in the song title and artists name. 2/10

Yeah, they're a good band, though every time I hear one of their songs, I can't help but wonder what lost Great Big Sea album they're from.

I'd never really made the connection before. They both have the obvious Celtic-folk influence, but Mumford & Sons feels like they also have a lot of that Irish fury that old school U2 had at times. They feel like they have something to say about the spiritual and political state of things, and they say it eloquently.

Great Big Sea tends to stick to traditional ditties about getting drunk and/or laid. There's definitely a time and place for both styles, but I don't think GBS could ever write music or lyrics like Mumford.

^ The lyrics are definitely much deeper (Great Big Sea have never been terribly great lyricists), but personally I definitely hear some musical similarities. Not really an issue or anything, it's just something I notice.

Anyway...

Song one was geolocked for me.

"Love Story" - Taylor Swift

Gah, I cannot stand pop-country. It's like a lame bastard child of two musical genres that can both be enjoyable in their own right. Swift is admittedly one of the better artists in this genre, and the fact that she writes her own songs is a point in her favour, but that doesn't change the fact that they're generally pretty insipid. This one in particular bothers me, because the lyrics seem like their based around a complete misreading of Romeo & Juliet... 3/10

Song three was also geolocked...
