Anti British and Anti French views

"Tonight she takes on her greatest challenge, Peter Griffin: Quahog's native son, self-described Huguenot, don't know what that means and community activist."

I give you the punchline to my favorite French joke:

"So that's why the French wear brown pants."

The French jokes probably started when America was a loyal British colony, and UK and France had a rivalry. A bit which continue to this day. It's mostly teasing, not any real hatred. Kind of remind me of rival sport teams. occasionally, things get real ugly on both sides.

I agree with Krisno. Most people get along, no matter what background they came from. Crazy psychos that hate everyone, ruin it for everyone else.

If that were true, you'd think such jokes would have ended after the Revolution, which we would not have won without France's help.

Actually that's a bit of a misconception. While teasing, insulting and/or making jokes at the expense of the French is seen as a national tradition in the UK, the opposite is not true in France.

The French don't tell that many jokes about British people, there is very little hostility, veiled or otherwise, directed at British people in France, and the kind of "har har, it's so funny to hate them" mentality that you're seeing for example in that IQ YouTube clip PianoWizzy posted is pretty much unheard of in France.

I'm sure it died down for a while. Later on, US start to drift back to more proBrit than proFrance, as relations between countries and leaders change. There are times when US, UK, and France hated the other, but now we are allies. Same goes for many other countries.

My bad, it's a typo. I meant the "French jokes probably started..." meaning americans make jokes about the french. I'll correct it in my post.

I have English relatives, so I am biased. I recuse myself from this debate. :shifty:

That being said, I think a joke is in order...

IN HEAVEN:
The English are the police.
The French are the cooks.
The Italians are the lovers.
The Germans organize everything.

IN HELL:
The French are the police.
The English are the cooks.
The Germans are the lovers.
The Italians organize everything.

:D
I like that, but in my heaven, The Italians would be the cooks and The French would be the lovers.

I'm not a fan of scargo/trop d'ail et le beurre or Cuisses de Grenouilles, how ever, French Girls/Coffee/Wine & Cigarettes just spells lots of sex, to me; :) Not that Italian girls don't, but bolognese sauce, pizza and ice cream does spell great food.

Typo aside, I'd say that most people in the UK or the United States see the whole thing as an ongoing rivalry, where both sides love to hate each other and make jokes at the expense of the other. That's not true: the French don't seem to be very interested in the UK, really.

I didn't say French made jokes about us, I said we make jokes about France. As for comparing to rival sport teams, some teams / fans take the rivalries more seriously than their rivals do. I know from experience.

Sure. Again, my post was not exclusively meant as a reply to you, it was a general statement.

UK: It's an island nation comprising Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and a constitutional monarchy.

France: It's a large republic in Western Europe.

Both nations formerly had overseas empires, and both are permanent members of the Security Council.

Besides that, I dunno.
You're right.

I have never seen it like that before, but you're right.
I'm reminded of Henry the 8th - As you all may know, he was the one who fell out with the Pope. - France is a Catholic country, so is Ireland (and many around the world.) - France is a republic, so is Ireland. - I'm thinking, the Pope is like the Queen in the Catholic faith.

Well, I'm British and I have nothing against the French. I've not spent long in their fine country but the little time I have, I found the French to be just fine. As for anti-British sentiments on the continent, who can blame them? Especially in the holiday resorts. The British abroad are often shameful in the way they comport themselves. It makes me ashamed.

It's the problem with us : we're mostly interested in ourselves

The French Fire Brigade have really sexy uniforms. You can give me a fireman's lift* any time, garçon.

*okay it might take two of them

The French have done nothing but stab us in the back since we saved their asses during WWII :p.

The Brits and the French never bothered to help Poland when Hitler attacked, in spite of the treaty. Now beat that :p

But I'm cool with both. I'd say that I like the British more, but only because I know more Brits than Frenchmen and I like them :) And I love British accent :adore:

I have never been to France. I probably wouldn't last too long if I tried, since I don't speak a word of French.

Um, many, if not most, speak English to some degree. And if that fails you can still point and gesture. I'm pretty sure you won't starve...
I survived my vacation in Portugal just fine, even though very few people there speak a language I speak, too. I can only recommend it, they're very friendly people.
