Anti British and Anti French views

All that aside, concerning the French, I don't know how else to describe their actions concerning the Nazi invasion. They could have at least resisted and fought back against that demented psychopath Adolf Hitler and his army of butchers, when they marched into France.

Yeah, I've heard that my ancestors were along the roads encouraging the Wehrmacht but I think they confused the invasion with the Tour de France...ah, silly times !

It's very rare that things make me laugh out loud, but that was damn funny

On another note, the lengths people will go to feel superior to others are quite astonishing.

And every time I see you use speechmarks "" on the same line makes me want to gouge my eyes out. :)

Good Christ, they're INVERTED COMMAS. I agree with Dimesdan now, there's no frakking way you're English.
Born and bred. :)

Although speech marks are two words, so I guess I apologise for my error there... But yeah, I hate seeing inverted commas or
"speech marks"
on the same line.

I may be English, but I feel British.

I for one, like Americans, so, no, we can't agree, as serious or not as that was, I do hate people who think they're cool all because they hate America... Hating America doesn't make you cool.
I didn't say that I hate America, I said that they're assholes. It's a subtle distinction that you would have known if English was your native tongue. :p

The question is not about "wining" or "losing". We know that English is the dominant language, of course. But we don't see our language the way you anglophones see your language. We don't see the French language as a tool to communicate, for us, it's a monument, a piece of art and a very important part of our identity (the language is what united us as a nation). It's not a question of antagonism.
We're talking about the Eurovision here. It's a competition where people wear silly hats and ride unicycles to some trashy europop and countries award points to whichever act was the most controversial. It is not a platform to show off great art. Almost every country involved has agreed to sacrifice their own language, which is a big part of their cultural identity, for the sake of what's easiest for most viewers. I think it's about time that France fell in line. :p

One word: Blitzkrieg.

Britain and France were caught completely off-guard. Britain retreated in the face of a superior military strategy, while France had nowhere else to retreat to. (And even then, de Gaulle and the Free French, and the Resistance, fought on.)

And while I am thinking about it, there is another unpopular description concerning the French. After ten years of fighting against the Communist North Vietnamese and failing in their efforts, the United States Of America and, to some extent, the United Kingdom Of Great Britain, had to go over there and clean up the mess that the French made. Look at the end results made there.

It wasn't just the politicians who were not letting us fight the Vietnam War the way it should have been fought, it was the mess that the French left behind that also escalated matters.

Hence the phrase 'Trust the French to screw up everything.'
Yes, because the British retreat from colonialism was a nice, tidy affair.

Ever hear of the Israel-Palestine conflict? That one is still going. India and Pakistan? That conflict still flares up every now and again. Even closer to home, Britain screwed up the partition of Ireland. What was supposed to prevent civil war here just led to decades of discrimination and sectarian violence that we're still crossing our fingers is part of the past.

So why are you willing to brush aside Britain's screw-ups yet you feel free to drag up France's?

You know, you can use them to quote people. ' ' and " " are pretty much interchangeable. Why does it annoy you so much?

Also, no offense, but you come across as being naively young. Not a problem, I'm young too, just sayin'

School teacher done messed up.

Well of course you can use them to quote people :), that's their use, other than dialog. I was taught it's both wrong and sloopy to use them in the same line, they must always start a line. However ' ' is more relaxed and doesn't.

I have English relatives, so I am biased. I recuse myself from this debate. :shifty:

That being said, I think a joke is in order...

IN HEAVEN:
The English are the police.
The French are the cooks.
The Italians are the lovers.
The Germans organize everything.

IN HELL:
The French are the police.
The English are the cooks.
The Germans are the lovers.
The Italians organize everything.

:D

Just a cursory look at the AP style guide says you're incorrect when you say quotation marks must always start a "line." It's common practice for quotes to come in the middle of a paragraph, and obviously if the quotes are surrounding a nickname, song title, or article title, they don't have to be at the start of the paragraph.

I was a European volunteer once. I met people from all over Europe, and everyone got along. French and British got along, Poles and Russians got along, Italians and Romanians got along, etc. In the real world national rivalries just melt away.

The only people who insist on judging citizens of a particular country on its national history, are people with no friends and no travel experience! :p

Hmm. Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter

Thanks for the link, it's now added to favorites on my internet explorer (And yes, I am aware favorites is an American-English word.) - Oh how I rue the irony of having to use it right now. :)

^Yeah, it doesn't really matter where you're from :); that's true to those with enough common sense.

It's "biased." "BIASED." Thank you.
Smacks head...
"Oh yeah, I had forgotten."
I'm glad you caught that, I didn't go to the best of schools, English class for me involved talking to the girl behind me 'in my head' and her, just being her, she was cool.

I have never been to France. I probably wouldn't last too long if I tried, since I don't speak a word of French.

Try to introduce it to France.

I'm okay with anyone who'se okay with me, but with soo many allies around. I wonder, why does it feel like America'll be the nation most trusted to take over?; should something like 28 Days Later ever happen to the UK. - I doubt America would let the EU try and contain such a lethal threat conviently contained on an island anyway; with out their help.

I'm part French 'Huguenot' - That part of my family came to London in the 1800s because France were killing us. - I wonder; Who else has heard of the plight of French Huguenot? - Not that I'm bitter or anything, but those people, the French Huguenots, seem to have gone largely undocumented here.
A couple of episodes of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' have famous people finding out they're descended from Huguenots. Check out the DVDs.
