What would you name your Runabout?

The USS Gila, for the river that flows from New Mexico through Arizona, and into the Colorado River. Beautiful country, especially near its headwaters.

But I always had a special fondness for The USS Rio Grande, because I lived in three cities along that river -- Albuquerque NM, Las Cruces NM, and El Paso TX. :techman:

Would there be confusion if names like Colorado and Missouri and Ohio were used? Named after states or rivers? Or previous ships, for that matter? Or does it matter?

Given it's been established they were all names after rivers I think fans would be smart enough if Missouri or Ohio appeared. :)

USS Kanawha, I live near one of the oldest rivers (The New River) but the USS New sounds cheesy. The New river is a tributary to the Kanawha River....

When, I watched the show, I always hoped that any new new runabout would be called the Colorado. Why wouldn't you choose the river that carved the Grand Canyon? :)

'cause then they wouldn't be able to blow that fucker up while keepin' the Rio Grande safe for the seven seasons...it could have torn the scifi geeks/nature lovers apart in this country!

True that.
There are so many great options because Earth has so many great river names. Presumably, the big rivers like Nile, Amazon, and Mississippi were used elsewhere and we just didn't see them.
I have also always wondered if any runabouts were named after non earth rivers?

The in universe problem is that it's very likely that river names shared with States have already been used for Starships named after the States. So they wouldn't be available for Runabouts.

Yeah, regardless of hull registry and type of vessel, it's unlikely Starfleet would have two ships with the same name in service at the same time.

Not canon, but in the DS9 Relaunch novels, a new runabout gets sent to DS9, and Captain Kira names it after a Bajoran river instead an Earth one. And her first officer makes a comment about it, but that was it.
