35 million is impressive. That's what, 10 million more than Atari bought it for?

Actually, it's 35 million Euros - Atari paid 26 million U.S. dollars; so in essence Atari made out like a bandit as it appears they'll be getting a License fee for NeverWinter Nights.

Also, based on comments made by the Dev team in the interim between the earlier Atari Divestiture announcement and today's announcement; it seems like the deal was in the works (and Cryptic was aware of that) when the Divestiture announcement was made; an d the ONLY reason the Divestiture annoucement was made public prior to today was because Atari (under French law) HAD to file its financial statements by a certain date; so that's probably why no one at Cryptic was overly concerned - because they knew they already had a buyer/deal in the works.

Thus now, like a lot of the rest of the U.S.; Cryptic is now owned by China. ;) In the end, it's a good thing because Perfect World does nothing but develop MMOs, so they probably see this as a way to expand their games into the U.S. market, while leveraging Cryptic's expertise in dealing with the U.S. market.

I'm just glad it appears that the situation had a positive resolution; and STO will continue to be online and available for the foreseeable future.

Perfect World is all F2P games isn't it? So are they likely to make STO F2P too?

I guess what I want to know is, how much are they going to chop away from the game?

Because thats how every F2P game I've played is. You've got the "Free" game, then you have to buy more.

All their Chinese based MMOs are F2P (as is 99% of the Asian MMO market); but given they also already own a game company in Seattle (Runic Games); have a more 'Western' style MMO (with North American servers) - called "Foresaken World"; I think that concern over them coming in and suddenly switch everything to their F2P model in the Western MMO market is premature. They essentially bought 100% stock in Cryptic; but I don't think they're going to absorb the company peer se; and send out Chinese executives to runit; as from the statement, they want to expand into the Western MMO marketplace and create a business model that works in that marketplace.

Thus it seems they saw Cryptic as a comp[ony that has done well in the marketplace, is expending; and they can use them to market some of their holdings in the Westerm MMO market through Cryptic.

I'm not saying STO will never go F2P (that was always a possibility, even if Atari had kept them); but I think The Perfect World folks (who have done a lot of MMOs) will let them continue as they have been; and if anything, maybe expand Cryptic's developmental resources.

But I think the notion that the 'new owners' will just come in and gut STO are a bit premature. If anything Cryptic knew this deal was in the works when Atari made the divestiture announcement public.

Actually its been said that if STO goes F2P it will use the same system as CO in that people with subs get all the content and I believe 400 C-store points a month and people with free accounts have to but eveything and no free C-store points.

So its not actually that bad.

Ok, I didn't know about that. I've been to their site some time ago when I was trying to get my WoW fix, not that those games really did it for me personally, and saw they were all free to play. Which isn't all bad, there have been some F2P games I've tried and liked. But there's others, like one some friends convinced me to try, that I got through the Free content in a day. Couldn't do anything after that. I probably could have worded the question better, but I was basically wondering what degree of F2P it would end up being *IF* they went that route.

If they do it that way, for sure. That sounds great! :bolian:

Yes I know but Cryptic already has a F2P game and they did it without ruining or strip mining it. So if Cryptic makes STO F2P they will almost certainly handle it in the same way as Champions.

Seriously people predict the worst no matter what actually happens.

I wasn't predicting anything, I was asking. Please don't make assumptions.

If I had come in here saying "OMG! This is going to ruin it!" Then your assumption would make sense. But since is was worded as an inquiry, it really doesn't.

EDIT:And as Hartzilla stated, there will be content that is not available to "Free" players if they use the CO system. So in that regard, the original question still applies. How much of it will be available to the "Free" players. So really, I don't see how asking about it is predicting the worst.

To interrupt the buyout-drama:

Just made Captain and traded in the wonderful USS Resolute cruiser with the USS Redemption, Galaxy Class. Sadly the currency apparently just changed at this stage and I can't buy CRAP for the new ship unless I do a crap-load of exploration missions. Ah well...

At least they are boring, repetitive, and limited in how often you can do them... :(

Yeah, the exploration part of the mission seriously is lacking, and more updates there would be good. Especially if you're going to tie so many of the end-game goodies to them.
