Another Lit Wish List Thread

As Greg said, not that much. The costs of physically printing and shipping books are a fairly small percentage of the total cost of making them. People tend to think of the cost of a thing in terms of material expenses, but that's overlooking labor. A lot of people devote a lot of time and work to writing, editing, approving, copyediting, proofreading, and typesetting a book, designing and creating its cover art and text, drawing up and processing the contract for it, writing its catalog entries, marketing and promoting it, etc.

Another thing to take into account is economy of scale. A lot less people would be buying an eBook than a physical book. Using the SCE eBooks as a baseline, eBooks tend to have 1/4th the content of a MMPB, which is sold for $7.99, and 1/6th the content of a TPB, sold for $16 (and in reality ~ $11 if ordered new on Amazon around the time of release and even cheaper if remaindered).

On Amazon, the uncollected Corp of Engineers and TNG Slings and Arrows are sold for $6.99 and Christopher Bennett's Kinshaya eBook can be pre-ordered for $5.99. Let's use the Kinshaya one as a baseline since its profitability will likely determine how soon further eBooks would be published. That makes the proportional content of an eBook cost $1.99 should it be in MMPB terms or $2.67 in TPB terms. Yet the cost to buy one is $5.99. If anything, eBooks are far more expensive per capita than MMPB or TPBs. A TPB at the Kinshaya baseline would cost $35.94 and a MMPB $23.96.

I've said this before, but I'd really like to read the autobiography of James T. Kirk that Peter David mentioned and excerpted a couple of times in New Frontier.

I agree with most wishes so far. Some of my own:

New Authors for the ENT-Relaunch. Mangels and Martin did show that they are able to write fantastic novels, but so far all their ENT-Stories were absolutely boring.

Star Trek - The Foundations of the Federation, a AotF-Style Behemoth about the creation and establishment of the Federation, preferably by KRAD.

The Crucible-Hardcover-Omnibus!

Slings and Arrows in TP

The Remaining CoE-Collections

A new Strange New Worlds Contest

More Lost Era, especially Sulu/Excelsior by Mangels and Martin.

An annual Myriad Universes Collection

More classical Exploration-Novels (Titan and Aventine). It's a big galaxy with much to discover, especially with the new Slipstream-drive.

A steady continuation of the DS9-Relaunch with at least one novel per year.

Mine:

  • A TOS Relaunch set in the post-TMP/pre-TWOK era.
  • More Vanguard.
  • The continual evolution of the TNG crew post-Nemesis.
  • A book or two about the "ringship" Enterprise set prior to ENT.

A book or two about the "ringship" Enterprise set prior to ENT.

Ah...you realize, of course, that Chris effectively wiped that out of the TrekLit universe in Ex Machina, in which he revealed that the picture was of a Vulcan ringship, which had been mistakenly put up in the rec room instead of the NX-01. (Great move on his part, BTW--explaining exactly why we didn't see a pic of the NX-01 in TMP....)

On topic: Basically, I'm with most everyone in what I'd wan't to see...with one addition.

Bring Ezri and Bashir back together, already!!! Reanok wants to see Sisko get his act together. Dittos for those two, as well--have them stop acting like children, and kiss and make up!

Oh...and have Bashir find out about Sarina's real agenda. The man's not stupid--make him use his mind and figure it out.

No, that is not what I said in Ex Machina. I said it was a prototype inspired by Vulcan ringships. What's more, I reveal more about it in Watching the Clock (drawing on what was established in the Ships of the Line 2011 calendar).

I Just wanted to add a few more things to my wishlist .Bring back Una McCormack to write some more Ds9 novels .Also S.D. Perry to write some Ds9 novels. I'd like to see David McIntee write some more Tng era novels.

Dunno which era I'd like to write more in, though I do want to do more Guinan, more Qat'qa, and maybe more Spot. It'd be cool to do the TOS crowd, though. And I have an Enterprise pitch...

As a reader I'd like to see Ann Crispin and Diane Duane come back.

Perhaps a look at the current situation on Cardassia(hopefully containing loads of Garak underhandedness).
Plus I'd really like to know where Miles O'Brien is now.

I just watched the Abrams movie today, and I would love to see some of the elements from that incorporated into the novels. I know we can't deal with the story, but I would love to see someprime versions of it's new characters, or possibly some of the new aliens who appeared.http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Alnschloss_K'Bentayr

As you say. My bad.

It'd probably never happen but I'd like to see a sequel to Diane Duane's "Dark Mirror" novel set in that continuity of the Mirror Universe. Perhaps taking place in current time for the TNG crew. That'd be fun to read. Not a crossover like the first book was, but just taking place in that version of the MU.

I would love to see the continuation of the Romulan War which I think we'll get another this fall. More to do with the Typhon Pact, Andoria leaving the UFP, something like the Typhon Pact series we just had, though I wasn't happy with all of those.

Being a DS9 junkie, as said above please fill in the gap. What led to Kira to resign, why Vaughn left for the Kirk, what happened there during the Invasion of '81.

Also more Sisko, though I was not happy with Sisko in RBoE at all. I rarely complain about Trek novels because I can generally find something I like. Wasn't pleased with Andoria leaving but think if/when they can come back could make the Federation stronger. I wasn't too happy with Bashir & his continued involvement w/ Section 31, but found the insight into the Breen really interresting. Even though I wasn't happy w/ the Sisko story, I did like the Tzenkethi 'puppet masters' pulling the strings w/ the Romulans.

More Aventine stories, Titan & New Frontier I still love. Took me a while but finally am into Vanguard. TNG I still love, which way will Picard go? Another DTI novel, I realy liked Watching The Clock. I was a fan of AotF & now WtC because they're Trek but a different way of telling a Trek story. I love ships, space stations, but something a little different like DTI or stories of President Bacco & her administration was fun.

Finally - no zombieTrek or vampireTrek.

I'm gonna echo the wishes for the Abramsverse books that were originally scheduled for last year, as well as the hardcover of Crucible with the extra short stories.

I would also like to see a Section 31 anthology, something that covers from their beginning to their eventual downfall.

I don't know if I have much of a wish list. I mean, if I had responded to a similar thread a couple years a go the last thing I would have asked for was more Voyager books and now, thanks to Kirsten Beyer, Voyager is one of the stronger Star Trek series out there. I would have asked for more DS9 books and that ones we got sort of fizzled out. Guess I'm willing to just let Pocket do its thing at this point.
