Iqbal Masih

For those unfamiliar, he was a child slave in Pakistan who, after freeing himself, became heavily involved in efforts to end child slavery. This included sneaking back into the factories, etc, to speak to the children labouring there and encouraging escape. He became a sort of "public face" for the anti-slavery organizations, giving speeches and campaigning openly in several countries. He said he had a dream of being "like Abraham Lincoln but for Pakistan". He was shot just shy of his thirteenth birthday, almost certainly an assassination.
Wow. VOTE! :techman:

I think my standard, current avatar qualifies nicely for this competition.

And a nice shout-out to Flukie for creating it.

How does this game work exactly? We all vote for the best image?
The person running the contest will put up a voting poll and set a limit on how many entries you can vote for. As for deciding how you want to judge the avs (content, quality of image, relevance, etc.) that's entirely up to you.

ETA: You're also welcome to join the contest.

Actually I would like something more along the lines of a photo(historical drawing or painting)...and possibly info when doing this. Please. :bolian:

Thanks. :) I thought I lead by example in my OP of posting the picture, name of the person and a little information.

Plenty of time to enter or add all the stuff I am asking for to your entry. :bolian:

Sir Douglas Bader

Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader (21 February 1910 – 5 September 1982) was a [Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter ace during the Second World War. He was credited with 20 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged.

Bader joined the RAF in 1928, and was commissioned in 1930. In December 1931, while attempting some aerobatics], he crashed and lost both his legs. Having been on the brink of death, he recovered, retook flight training, passed his check flights and then requested reactivation as a pilot. Although there were no regulations applicable to his situation, he was retired on medical grounds. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, however, Bader returned to the RAF and was accepted as a pilot. He scored his first victories over Dunkirk during theBattle of France in 1940. He then took part in the Battle of Britain In August 1941, Bader was forced to bail out over German-occupied France and was captured. Despite his disability, Bader made a number of escape attempts and was eventually sent to the POW camp at Colditz Castle. He remained there until the camp was liberated by the First United States Army in April 1945.

You know, I'm agnostic, but I'm actually considering voting for him because of his political ideas (and that's his political ideas, not the ideas of the people who came after him). He was one of the first humanists, if not the first.

I'll give this a go too:

This is Manfred Albrecht von Richthofen, also known by his nickname The Red Baron. With 80 air combat victories, more than any other pilot, he was the Aces of Aces of the First World War, respected and feared by pilots of all sides. The avatar, based on a 1917 photograph, shows him decorated with the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max), the highest military honour awarded by the Kingdom of Prussia.

His flying exploits have been the stuff of legend, and probably the closest thing one could have to a war "hero" during that terrible period of conflict.

He also shared a Christmas drink with Snoopy.

Mr. Jetfire will not be available to post the voting thread. He has asked me to take care of it. Poll will go up early evening ET (US). Still plenty of time to enter!
