Star Trek Online - Worth it?

Status
Not open for further replies.
So, to recap:

-Don't like teaming up for STF or regular missions
-Don't live PvP
-Don't like to spend time playing in general
-Hate the forums
-Aren't happy with the game content

Why are you even bothering, again? Spend a lot of time here complaining about it, must like SOMETHING about it, right?

I like Star Trek
I like the SOLO play
I spend a lot of time playing except when the contents exhausted (maybe less of the teaming content will get us more SOLO content)
Dislike overly ghestapo forums such as STOs. Basically all you can say there is how great everything is period. Pretty much defeats the purpose of having a forum.
Need to make more end game content! There's more than enough noob material.
My complaints are constructive critizm without which we will all be stuck in genner ships swilling tea and being pacifists while the Klingons stomp us.
As for a lot of time, I can hardly call half a dozen posts over almost as many days a lot.

What do you mean less teaming content? We have exatly 4 STFs: FOUR!!!
If you reduce teaming content it means NO teaming content.
What would be the point of calling this an MMO then?

I would like to call it single player or "instanced MMO" take your pick.

I'm reffering to future teaming content being worked on which is worthless IMO and time better served creating more normal game content. One STFs worth of work is a season's worth of normal content. I think they are babying Gozer which will bite them in the but when they need to make him do something he doesn't want to.

Simply comparing the popularity for the weeklies compared to the STFs should give a good supportive reason for this. I know some people like the STFs, some people also like hitting themselves in the head with a hammer. I personally find the STFs tedious now and feel bad for those unable to complete the horrible things. I had PTSD for a month after, kept seeing Borg all the time when I closed my eyes.

You see, there we can met on middle ground. I like it that the FEs can be soloed, but they become so much more enjoyable when played with a team.
One reason they have those optional mission objectives is to add an incentive for team play, so one toon can still all teh accolades. I would even go so far as to suggest adding a team reward if you complete all optional accolades for the series.
That would prepare people a lot better for the STF and they wouldn't be so tedious as they are for someone trying them for the first time. At least if you don't run them with an experienced group they are.
By now I know them so well that they are no more tedious then any other mission, just a tad bit longer, but I spend that time in good company usually.

I did meet several cool people in the week it took to do The Cure. When one of them asked for help with KA right after I figured why not. We did that in a little over an hour?

Only bad thing is getting notified every few seconds when they log off.. then back on... then off.... then back on.

I'm thinking if they break the STF's up into weekly sized chunks with loot at the end of each section......

Still feel bad whenever I pass through Orionis and hear the Banshies, "lfg cure..."

But you can still do the lifetime thing for $300! :P

Yeah, I'm going to play it out, I think, until the servers finally go. But I'll be paying for the cheapie cards rather than give out my CC info to a dying company.

Glad I am on the monthly plan !

Though if they are bringing in a lot more money then it costs to run, I suspect you might have them Chapter 11 it instead of a full shut down.. .

If you don't like the game, stop threadcrapping every time it's mentioned...

I have already said I like the game, I hate the forum base and the ghestapo running it. Since this is all that's left "supporting" the game with their lifer smugness, it is no surprise that it is dying.

Next time keep the launcher poll and ignore the forum, if there is a next time.

In fact a lot of what you don't like about the forum is mandated by Atari (That's what I read on the forum by the way).
So you should celebrate this development.
Anyway, I agree after a brief moment of concern, that STO isn't going anywhere.

And I would urge everyone to return to discussing the game itself instead of the soon to be divorced distributor.

That would be much more fun for everybody.

Also keep in mind that discussing moderation is also against forum rules!

So I got railroaded by the ghestapo.

I'm not the only one and that is pretty much why they are in the predicament they are in today.

It could get worse for them even, depending who talks to who. ;)

We will have to wait and see, but I hope the game survives, even under new management.

It is really too bad STO wasn't built like Aion. They don't have instances, they use a Launcher poll and give you something for it whether you select "yes", "no" or "don't care" and I never had to visit their forums for answers, I got them directly from the chat. Too bad Aion wasn't SciFi instead of Fantasy.

The problem with a heavily-used (or even moderately-used) RPG with no instancing is that it LAGS! My computer's pretty darn good, but at ESD and when using certain weapons, I still get major lag, just from the huge amounts of processing being done.

Yep. And the only ways to relieve that are to reduce the amount of data that must be transferred and to change the gameplay so that responsiveness is not required.

For instance, EVE Online basically has ships that fly themselves, commands that run in long loops and can only be changed in between loops (you tell lasers to fire, they fire for five seconds, if you tell them to stop two seconds in, the game stops them three seconds later), and zero customization to be transmitted. It also uses defacto zoning by hiding "loading screens" behind warp transitions. That makes for a good game, but I doubt Star Trek fans would want this game changed so drastically away from the interactive play it has now.

Other games separate the players at character creation instead, by having dozens or hundreds of servers, but who wants to have to reroll or transfer a character when you want to play with people you meet?

The only choice remaining is zoning. Personally I prefer it. Some people don't. At least with zoning we can play with new people we meet outside the game, such as here on TrekBBS, or on IRC, or on other forums.

I met a nice couple in the grocery store once who played WoW. We talked for fifteen minutes, then they suggested I come raid with them that weekend. I couldn't; I wasn't on their server. What a stupid reason not to be able to play with friends.

More info/ reasonably entertaining.

After seeing this I will be checking out Guild Wars 2.

Don't listen to the STO forum people constantly spinning wishfull thinking. Do your own research. Why listen to the people responsible for the games downfall? I find all this spinning more disturbing than the actual original statement.

Bottom line: never buy a lifetime sub, that way if they do go dark you aren't out more than a month. Never buy more than a month at a time either and watch your Atari Points balance, keep it low enough that you can live with losing it.

IMO if they had stuck to Star trek ships using the correct weapons instead of super powers, it would have been a better game.

Edit: Just found out that if you try and find this link on the STO forums the mods have already incorporated it into the "bury the evidence" General section:

http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=215666&page=134

I find that even more indicative than the forum spin.

Have given you an infvraction now for your previous post - please stop posting this kind of inflamatory stuff as it only winds people up and I did ask you politely last week to tone it down.
