Do You Ever Get Fed Up And Down With People?

He didn't say he was intelligent, he said he was intellectual. Plenty of people are intellectual with limited social understanding. Sometimes being very intellectual is a hindrance because that is where your brain was developing rather than in the social sphere.

Oh and OP,

my conversational skills, whilst good are laced with a lot of historical and obscure popular culture references that only a few people in my social circle really get.

You should try to just enjoy your own references and not worry if people don't get them. Sometimes someone WILL get it and that will be a nice talking/clicking point. Just make sure they don't make up the bulk of your conversation or appear in every response.

I'm all too familiar with that
Same here.

Right. It’s one thing to be urbane and erudite, it’s another to talk like Dennis fucking Miller.

Well, so long as you don't go shooting Arabs on the beach, you should be able to muddle through somehow.
I am quite proud of myself for getting this reference.
I dunno. It is the most famous scene from the most famous work from one of the most famous authors of the 20th century.

One must cultivate more obscure knowledge to impress Captain M. Perhaps an encyclopedic grasp of the life and work of Jobriath, or the ability to recite Epicoene from memory.

Sorry for the slight OT, but I've also noticed recently on another mainly Brit board the same kind of capitalisation, and was wondering about it... I guess it's a Brit thing...

Not to my knowledge, I don't consider it British or common journalistic practice. In fact I have never seen anyone do it before, at least not on purpose.

I've also never seen it anywhere "official": in the news, on the internet, or anywhere... but I've been seeing people using it in forums lately, native English speakers (which I am not), particulary Brits, and been wondering what is up with that? I know that in German every noun is capitalised, but not in English....I guess it is a new trend or something...doesn't make it right though... :P

Just to point out, I don't want to attack anyone for their English, I'm just genuinely curious about it in a lingvistic sence. :P

I've done it for as long as I can remember and yes I've noticed other people do it. Perhaps you will just have to go with it as being a "Brit Thing" but other than what I've tried to explain already, I'm not aware of any other reasons for it.

Hope this helps.
