'SGU' Movie Would Have Been A Stargate Movie

Brad Wright reveals failed movie effort would have covered entire franchise by ALAN STANLEY BLAIR, Posted May-10-2011

Well there you have it, "Stargate: Universe" has reached the end of its two-year journey.

Fans hoping there would be a "Stargate: Universe" movie (or any continuation of the series) will not get what they were looking for. News that MGM was bringing the Stargate movie series to an end broke last month, leaving many fans mourning the series before it even ended.

However, if the anticipated "Stargate: Universe" movie did go ahead it would not be an SGU movie and would instead be a movie covering the full Stargate franchise.

"I intended to incorporate elements from both 'SG-1' and 'Atlantis' to make it a 'Stargate' movie and not just a 'Universe' movie," Wright told TVSquad. "The combination of elements also happened to be the only way I could think of compressing what was intended to be a longer series arc into one movie."

Actor David Blue (who played Eli Wallace on the show) also expressed his pride for what the series was and revealed that the movie could have won over fans of the franchise who couldn't get behind SGU.

"I feel like it would have made a lot of the fans of each series happy all at the same time, which is something I think this franchise has been missing," Blue said. "I hate to see a schism in fandom, but it seems to be happening more and more these days ... It would have been nice to see everybody congeal and come together in support of one thing."

From its conception, "Stargate: Universe" had something of a tough time from fans of the franchise, with many seeing it as too dark too be Stargate. Meanwhile, other viewers saw it as a more grown-up take of the Stargate idea with real consequences.
Regardless of how history will see the series, Blue remains proud of his accomplishments.

"I'm really proud of how I feel about Eli having now finished the show," he said. "I'm really proud of where he grew to and where he went, and I would love to see it further, but, to me, it was a cool place to end it."
Hmmm...seems like David Blue had similar thoughts as i did about SG U. (i personally liked his character best on SG U)

MGM are just daft and SYFY too because I think a Movie to say farwell to the characters and wrap up as much as possible would of been a hit. I hope one day we can get a Mini series at least like Farscape had to say goodbye to all the characters of Stargate :)

Isn't it just a case of funding? I don't mean to trivialize it but if they went this route and did something that encompassed the entire franchise instead of the DTV's wouldn't that be feasible economically for MGM? They probably are really picky about what to give money towards now though given their situation.

It's doubtful the investment would have come from MGM for it anyway, at least not all of it.

With hindsight I would have compressed Darkness and Light into one episode, the same with Water and Earth as well as Life and Justice. I would have struck Space and Divided, pushed Faith and the rest of Season 1 up into the first half of the season and had the start of season 2 be the 1.5 premier.

I never had a problem with them taking their time, it was a nice change of pace. I can understand why it didn't go down well with today's audiences though.

Too bad there isn't some billionaire fan who is loose with his money.

We were lucky enough that it happened once with Ted Turner and Babylon 5. It's not something we can dare hope for again.

Syfy don't own the series. I think Mallozzi would probably torch the place before letting them use it for one of their movies :rommie:

It sounds like a good idea on paper, but at the end of it all, Carter, McKay, Zelenka, Rush, and Eli would probably all come together to pull some magical technobabble "insta-win" solution out of their collective asses at the last minute, so, no thank you.

I'd love it just to see Zelenka again.

Sure SGU was a little darker, but after seeing BSG, I thought SGU was great. I agree that a movie would have been great. In fact, anything from the SG franchise would be welcomed. It's a shame it's all come to an end.
