Season 6.1 on DVD

Hi folks,

a friend asked me today, and I couldn't help her, so I'm handing the question to you guys:

Will the upcoming Season 6.1 DVD box set include the "Christmas Carol" special?

She's gonna decide on this wether she will buy the half-season box sets or wait for the complete season box set. Any help is appreciated.

The Christmas Carol is separate but I suspect may be included in the complete season box set. Don't know if available yet stateside, but TCC is already available here on DVD and Blu ray.

The Christmas special is going to be included in the box set, along with one (but, reportedly, not both) of the special features on the standalone DVD, meaning either Doctor Who Confidential or Doctor Who at the Proms will remain exclusive to the standalone.

Technically, the Christmas specials do not belong to any season, and are included in the season sets as "bonus" episodes, so it makes sense for it to not be included in the 6.1 set. I'll be waiting for the full-season set, myself. I didn't mind double-dipping Christmas Carol because it was cheap and I'm assuming the concert isn't going to be in the season box, and I wanted to have that show. But a couple of Monster Files featurettes (both of which are a sure bet to be included in the full set, and if not are no real loss) isn't enough value-added for me to double dip on this one.

Thanks for the quick and direct answers, I'll pass them on to my friend. Guess she'll wait for the complete box set, then.

I thought the Christmas specials are listed as season#.0 example, latest Christmas special is 6.0.

Not quite. According to The Writer's Tale, in RTD's era, the Christmas specials had the following production codes:

2.X -- "The Christmas Invasion"
3.X -- "The Runaway Bride"
4.X -- "Voyage of the Damned"
4.14 -- "The Next Doctor"
4.17 -- "The End of Time, Part One"

Exactly. So Christmas Carol could carry a 6.X code - or even a 5.X code depending on whether the BBC considered it to be part of the production block for Series 5 or 6 (production blocks and actual seasons don't always correlate, of course). Probably 6.X. But as it doesn't fit the story arc and was only recently released on its own, those are two additional reasons why Christmas Carol won't be in the 6.1 set.

I just remembered the Space and Time mini-episodes are also omitted, presumably to also appear in the box set. Another reason why I'm going to wait. (But it will take willpower as I was so blown away by The Doctor's Wife I might not want to wait till December to get it on Blu-ray).
