Theoretical: If HBO did Sc-Fi what books would you want them to do

How about a Heavy Metal or Epic Illustrated Anthology show? It would be like Twilight Zone or Outer Limits but with Fantasy stories with nudity and gore, like the modern Outer Limits show that was on Showtime.

There are some incredible stories that I would love to see done as either live action or animated.

Well, if it's for HBO we want it to be sexy, so John Norman's Gor series would be perfect. :rommie:
I'd never heard of that before, so I looked it up on wikipedia, and that is definitely not my kind of thing.

^ I just looked it up too. Sounds pretty awful, honestly.
The Gor series is legendary for its awfulness. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.
29 books about Sexual Adventures in Ancient Rome-like society that includes Insectoid Aliens and written by a Psychologist? Yea, not really my speed, either

The very mention of a Psychologist writing Sexual Adventures sets my teeth on edge, and drums up visions of gratutitous sex randomly occurring, just like people randomly breaking out in song in a Musical. :rommie:

Brian Lumleys Necroscope series would certainly catch my attention. Not pure sci-fi but many elements of such included.

Maybe I am hallucinating, but didn't HBO do that back oh say the early 90s?

I enjoyed that series... as a teenager with raging hormones.
rereading it as a adult... I just had to put it down.

^^ I actually read them (well, three or four of them) when I was about eleven years old-- and my parents bought them for me. "Oh, that sci fi stuff is all for kids." :rommie:

Apparently not. I don't remember what the covers were like then. Or maybe they just gave me the money. This was about forty years ago.

I read the damnedest things as a kid because it was "just scifi".
But not Gor. It looked bad even then.

Houseplants of Gor

The spider plant cringed as its owner brought forth the watering can. "I am a spider plant!" it cried indignantly. "How dare you water me before my time! Guards!" it called. "Guards!"

Borin, its owner, placed the watering can on the table and looked at it. "You will be watered," he said.

"You do not dare to water me!" laughed the plant.

"You will be watered," said Borin.

"Do not water me!" wept the plant.

"You will be watered," said Borin.

I watched this exchange. Truly, I believed the plant would be watered. It was plant, and on Gor it had no rights. Perhaps on Earth, in its permissive society, which distorts the true roles of all beings, which forces both plant and waterer to go unh appy and constrained, which forbids the fulfillment of owner and houseplant, such might not happen. Perhaps there, it would not be watered. But it was on Gor now, and would undoubtedly feel its true place, that of houseplant. It was plant. It would be watered at will. Such is the way with plants.

Borin picked up the watering can, and muchly watered the plant. The plant cried out. "No, Master! Do not water me!" The master continued to water the plant. "Please, Master," begged the plant, "do not water me!" The master continued to water the plant. It was plant. It could be watered at will.

The plant sobbed muchly as Borin laid down the watering can. It was not pleased. Too, it was wet. But this did not matter. It was plant.

"You have been well watered," said Borin.

"Yes," said the plant, "I have been well watered." Of course, it could be watered by its master at will.

"I have watered you well," said Borin.

"Yes, master," said the plant. "You have watered your plant well. I am plant, and as such I should be watered by my master."

The cactus plant next to the spider plant shuddered. It attempted to cover its small form with its small arms and small needles. "I am plant," it said wonderingly. "I am of Earth, but for the first time, I feel myself truly plantlike. On Earth, I w as able to control my watering. I often scorned those who would water me. But they were weak, and did not see my scorn for what it was, the weak attempt of a small plant to protect itself. Not one of the weak Earth waterers would dare to water a plant if it did not wish it. But on Gor," it shuddered, "on Gor it is different. Here, those who wish to water will water their plants as they wish. But strangely, I feel myself most plantlike when I am at the mercy of a strong Gorean master, who may water m e as he pleases."

"I will now water you," said Borin, the cactus's Gorean master.

The cactus did not resist being watered. Perhaps it was realizing that such watering was its master's to control. Too, perhaps it knew that this master was far superior to those of Earth, who would not water it if it did not wish to be watered.

The cactus's watering had been finished. The spider plant looked at it.

"I have been well watered," it said.

"I, too, have been well watered," said the cactus.

"My master has watered me well," said the spider plant.

"My master, too, has watered me well," said the cactus.

"I am to be placed in a hanging basket on the porch," said the spider plant.

"I, too, am to be placed in a hnaging basket on the porch," said the cactus.

"I wish you well," said the spider plant.

"I, too, wish you well," said the cactus.

"Tal," said the spider plant.

"Tal, too," said the cactus.

I did not think that the spider plant would object to being watered by its master again. For it realized that it was plant, and that here, unlike on Earth, it was likely to be owned and watered by many masters.

^this is a parody, but sad thing is, it rather close to the one Gor book I that I read a few chapters of...

After I brought up HBO doing a sci-fi series in the sci-fi on TV thread, I got thinking about it some more, and I realized that most of their big shows lately have been based on books. So if HBO were to do a sci-fi series, what book or book series do you think would be a good source?

Not a book, but it would be epic if they were to do a series on the Mass Effect world.

:guffaw:

I have no idea what Gor is, but that story is hysterical. I would watch an HBO series like that about the tribulations of outer space houseplants.

The plant sobbed muchly
Shouldn't that be "mulchly" or perhaps "mulchily"? Either way, it's a great line.

Sadly, I cannot claim credit for it, it is a semi-famous usenet post...

Gor women are slaves, and men are manly men, and after they are "watered" (you know what i mean) the women accepts that they are slaves, that they are truly happy as slaves, and then the it goes to the next conquest.

I am not making it up. its ...BAD. Though its more empty, I get more upset at the sexual violence of the Gap series, which if it wasn't for what the author makes Morn (The main female character) go though on a regular, repeated basis the Gap series would be one of the best Science Fiction out there.

Then U'd enjoy world mind from the Flynx novels.... which btw would make a good series... Flynx not the world mind...

For our fave Vorta....

House plants in SPPAAACCEE!

Cast

Captain Tex Cactus

Played by a small house plant Cactus, This Cactus has risen to the command of the U.S.S. Greenhouse, a biological research ship in space. He is still haunted by the fact that he and his Science officer are the only remaining survivors of the Kacras III drought. Voiced by a male actor with a commanding voice.

First officer Valeris Ven

A exotic Venus Fly Trap, She is new to the ship and is very much "By the book" unlike Tex Cactus, who will bend the rules to get the job done. The main enemies of the first series, the Aphid confederation, still hates her as she was in command of a flowerpot that took out a large number of Aphids by the "Ladybug maneuver". Voiced as a female.

Science officer Spada "Spider" Muthas

A spider plant who was fresh out of the nursery when the Kacras III drought hit, was one of the few Plant Force crew to survive, by using her powers of personality to be properly watered. has a reputation that she will pollinate with anyone, but in reality is very shy at such close contact.

Pilot Jorge "Bonsai" Marcos

A hotshot pilot who has been intentionality stunted so that he can fit into the small Plant Force shuttles. Has a neoplolian complex that has gotten him in trouble till he found a home on the U.S.S Greenhouse. Him and Valeris Ven butt heads on a regular basis, but it is only romantic tension as both find each other irresistible, but pretend to hate each other instead of being honest.

Chief Engineer Johnny Dung

A old and wise "Graft" subtype. He has memories that are hundreds of years old, as he is a "Graft", a clone with all the memories of his old plant up to the point where his cells where taken and grown as a new plant. He is a great source of wisdom to the sometimes young crew.

Counselor Susan Svetlana

A delicate orchid, this plant tries to keep the rest of the plants sane. It sits on the bridge and looks nice, and occasionally says the most obvious things in the world, like "Those Aphids if they get in the greenhouse will eat our leaves, then we will die!"
