Star Trek Online - Worth it?

The T5 Excelsior is one of the best cruisers offensively speaking, with a great turnrate and a Lt Cmdr tactical station.

Which is why I'm probably going to get that when I hit admiral seeing as at least that might work with the TOS interiors seeing as it at least resembles a connie on some level, Of course the moment they release TWOK interiors and fix the ranks on the unis I'm doing some switches.

Other way to handle that is just stay off the forums. Tends to bring out the 'best of the best' at places like that. I mean, look at us here ;)

Well it wouldn't be a problem if the Devs didn't actually listen to these people.

I agree. Sadly it looks like that is all they do is listen to the loud few that don't even agree with each other, so the company is always scrambling in damage control instead of making content.

When STO does fail these same people will be asking, "What happened, the game was just getting good imo?"

Then they will be off to try and ruin another MMO. fortunately Bioware has already told these same people where to go so they won't be ruining SWTOR.

That's honestly a complete over-exasggeration. Sryptic has done a lot of major improvements and have done new content rather quickly (imo) compared to most other MMOs. The Season 4 Update is just around the corner and has a lot of updates, and teh addition of the Duty Officer system, new tutorial for both Fed and KDF (and meaning new players don't have to start a Fed character and level it to 6 to 'unlock the KDF); and a revamp of the Klingon homeworld. The Feds will also be getting more planets and locations to visit in the SOL system, Ground Combat is getting a complete revamp; and post Season 4; they plan to release 9 Featured episode series a year, and keep that pace goping forward (with no more than a 2 week break between them); and STO is tghe first major MMO since Asheron's Call (years ago) to try a weekly content release schedule.

Asfor 'listening to whiners'; please, they listen to everybiody an generally keep a very even keel with regard to what they implement. And while I'm one of the folks who argued for and would have loved to see a T5 Constitution, CBS told Cryptic no; so, nothing they can do at that point.

Plus, if all they did was 'listen to the whiners'; that should have meant they have already reversed the decision as people are doing nothing but whining on their forums about the final selection CBS made for that contest.

As for SWToR - if the game ever gets released, what really dissapoints me is the fact it's a WoW clone (game mechanics wise - even down to the old MMO group 'trilogy' requirement of tank/healer/dps); plus the fact it's 'Space Combat System' (and I use the term loosly is going to be a 2D rail-shooter mini-game (that can be skipped); and there are just three 'player ships' (for player housing); and the ship you get is determined by which main class you choose (Your sub class specilization has no effect on what ship you get.)

And while full VO and all those cutscenes will be wonderful for you first character's playthrough; I think by yyour 3rd alt, you'll be escaping through the VO and cutscenes. Plus the full VO will mean any additional content takes longer to produce, and intigrate or adjust as tnhey ahve the extra burden (and cost) of producing the new VO and incorperating it. And it's probably why the game's release - first expected in late 2010 - is now expected in 2012; and perhaps even early 2013.

But for me, I don't find Cryptic's willingness to communicate and discuss STO game changes and ciontent tweaks with the community at large (even though I don't always agree with the final decision). It's an attitude and procedure I wish more MMO developers would adopt.

I think STO is definitely worth it; and with each season update and featured episode series addition, it's just getting better.

They would be infinately better off mirroring Biowares "you get what we make" attitude when it comes to the forums as all the bad things in game came from the forum whiners be it overzealous Klingon PvPrs that will use any exploit to win to the rabid canon nazis who "don't want to further polute the timeline."

They definately don't listen to the pro T5 Connie crowd. The fact that they won't allow THE Iconic ship without which there would be no whiney genners proves they don't know jack about Star Trek and are just treading water allowing the forum to give them the ideas we are paying THEM to produce. Just like the Foundry and the tribble server let's us do all their work for them.

Fortunately the new movie has eliminated next gen entirely so they are pushing an empty agenda.

Or as trekkies consider it following in the foot steps of Roddenberry himself. Especially since playing to the core fan groups is what kill Trek in the first place becuase general audiences didn't care anymore.

except only a few space ships were ever really major in Star Wars and they seem to actually be doing more than paying lip service to customization. Plus TOR looks like it will nip any PVP/PVE drama in the butt by putting them of separate servers.

Unfortunately, by typing this, you now come across as somebody who has NO idea what they're talking about.

New Movie starting at the beginning of TOS period invalidates all Trek beyond that period. As far as Abrams is concerned, it all never happened. I don't know if I like it, but I realize I have to live with it. I'm happy he at least picked TOS to start with. The only valid Trek left is Enterprise and I'm thinking Abrams has a prequel in his mind to take care of that mistake.

I'll try to explain:

The genners as I call them are the "Gimme it now" generation used to instant gratification as well as only knowing the Next Gen as the only Trek. They feel that TOS is too old and should never be heard from again.

The silver lining to this is that JJ Abrams latest Trek movie is catering to a new generation with even more instant gratification issues so soon the genners will be feeling just like us TOS people when the new Trekkers say, "What's a Sovereign? We don't want any of that old crap in OUR Star Trek!"

Wrong. They state in the movie that they are in an alternate timeline. Besides, if the old timeline no longer exists, how did Old Spock get there?

...JJ Abrams latest Trek movie is catering to a new generation...

True, but as I stated above, the old timeline isn't "wiped out" - they simply shifted to an alternate universe/timeline. The old version still exists, somewhere to the "left" of the Abrams timeline. There are plenty of "nods" to "Old Trek" in the Abrams-verse.

As a note, I had more fun with STO then most other MMOs, and I tried out a few, this will be the first one I might keep for longer then a month or two...

First one I've ever tried. There's enough single-player content to get me playing, and certainly lends itself to teaming up and working missions together as well. Pretty decent setup, as far as I can say without anything to really compare it to.

Then again, there's always things like people dancing in the nightclub and such, and I don't get that aspect. Why log in to do shit like that?

I think that this is all it is, merely a nod to all that has come before... that will never be seen again.

How about the pic of the Connie we can't have to advertise their 500 day awards? You can't say they don't have a sense of humor.

Star Trek 2009 = Alternate timeline. It says so right in the movie.

The "Old Trek" or Prime universe is still there. Not wiped out, not gone, still there! End of subject.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Willing to wager if you will ever see it again in a modern movie? "Prime" universe has been "overwritten" by the current universe making that one "Prime" and the old one "speculative."

OT I like to play STO, just wish they actually had some Trek fans on staff or staff that knew more about the shows. Should be a mandantory Trek Test for hiring. Also they should rotate their forum mods monthly to prevent the current ghestapo trend.

Huh? Are you saying the STO Devs aren't up on their Star Trek? As a fan myself since 1969, I have to disagree as many of their missions relate directly back to elements across all the TV series and films and many contain an 'ester egg' that is some real Trek minutae.

Honestly, given the nature of MMOs, and the type of players they usually attract; I thought an MMO based on the Star Trek franchise woould be impossible to pull off, maintain and run; but the STO Devs proved me wrong. I think overall STO does an excellent job of presenting and using the 45 year history of the Star Trek franchis in an MMO setting that works and definitely has a good 'Trek' feel to it overall.
