Jewish newspaper removes Hillary Clinton from White House photo

And Laura Bush!

They edited out the wrong Bush.

So sick. Maybe we should edit Jews out of photos... oh wait that's wrong!

This is so insane I expected it from some extreme "Muslim" newspaper, not the Jews. Does someone need to remind them that Hilter tried to erase the Jews, and places still ignore that the Holocaust ever happened?

This is simply insane...

According to CNN, the paper said, "Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging women, which is certainly never our intention."

No, not disparaging at all. It's their way of showing women's equality.

"Modesty" laws? She was fully clothed!

Yes, Thank You Jewish Newspaper Dudes!! You have saved us all from the great sin of self-pleasure, induced by the visage that is Hillary. I for one know that I am now a better person and fully expect to enter those pearly gates after having been saved by your newspaper. We should pin a medal on you Jewish Dudes!! Thank You!!

I know, right! It is a good thing that you can judge all of us Jews for what a few Hasidics did.

The reality is that pretty much every religion has a group of ultra-orthodox people who periodically do things like this that, lets face it, deserve ridicule. But it's pretty easy to do that without disparaging the entire group.

I'm no expert on Hasidic culture, but they're pretty strict on what both genders can wear... and hair can apparently be an issue. When I was a lad one of my relatives married into a Hasidic family and the wedding was an.. interesting experience to say the least.

Uh, yeah, but Hillary's not Jewish... This is censorship, pure and simple, even against the express instructions included with release of the photo!?!

Fault rests clearly on the editors of this paper. Crop the photo or don't run it at all. Photoshopping individuals out of existence by a 'news' outlet in unacceptable.

Right. It’s like judging the entire religion of Islam by the actions of a few jihadist extremists.

Chasidic Jews are a minority of a minority. Even most other Jews think they’re weird.

Of course it's unacceptable. If you will read my post in its entirely you will see that I did not in fact defend what they did and rather explicitly said that it was deserving of ridicule. Doesn't mean that one can't try and understand why they did it, even though it was obviously the wrong thing to do.

That's pretty ridiculous, and foolish... that they think they could slide that under the radar.

The White House's caveats notwithstanding, it's pretty silly to say that what the Chasidim did is "wrong" or "unacceptable." It's not "censorship" for them to publish a picture altered in any way they want. It would be censorship if they were forbidden from altering it any way they want. It's a yiddish language newspaper marketed to a very small, very insular community. It's not trying to pass itself off as the paper of record.
Get a little perspective, folks.

I would call it unacceptable from a journalist standpoint, regardless of how small the intended audience is. Even if the White House hadn't made a statement that the photo shouldn't be edited, I would say that it goes without saying. If the publisher wasn't comfortable with the photo as it was then they should have just not printed it at all.

It's unacceptable from a sexist, journalistic, and legal standpoint since the White House gave specific instructions for how the picture could be reused, and it's the very definition of censorship. If they had a problem with the content, instead of altering the picture they simply shouldn't have run it.

That it's targeted at a very limited audience simply means that it's not a huge deal worth making a big fuss over, but of course it's wrong.

I'm distressed by the misuse of the word 'chauvinism' in this thread. Chauvinism means extreme nationality. The term's 'sexism' or 'misogyny' are what you need. Just because one feminist coined the phrase 'male chauvinist pig', to mean excessively pro-male and anti-female, doesn't mean y'all slavishly follow her rather poor analogy incorrectly.

I'm distressed that on a regular basis some people on this board fail to realize that the meanings and spellings of words evolve over time or by region, and frequently correct others for words they're not using incorrectly. :p

Right from Oxford itself, which I believe is your preferred source.

You'd think people here would catch on to that after the tedious grammar, spelling, slang, and word meaning rant threads we have on this board each week where every person who proclaims themselves to be some kind of definitive expert gets contradicted by five other people with equally valid claims to being correct.

Remember where you are, Grasshopper. The day this board stops nitpicking is the day it dies.

Oh and I am always right. Remember that too.
