What makes you think the pirates are raping anyone?

I don't know about raping but we're told that Avery has killed 1000 people, which is 999 more than the Silence but that's OK because he's got a son he has to work out some "issues" with, apparently.

I liked it well enough- standard Doctor Who stuff.

I'm more excited for next week.

This was the first episode in quite a while that I found to be a bit boring. It was still OK though, but I have never been particularly taken with Pirate stories, or Mermaids for that matter.

Meanwhile the Tenth Doctor kept trying to rehabilitate the Master and Davros but that's ok cos he was RTD's Doctor I imagine?

I'm not disagreeing with your assesment, I'm disagreeing with the assumption that this is somehow new behaviour for the Doctor?

I think everyone has gone mental, this was one of the best episodes in a while, much more fun and less confusing than the premier. Classic Doctor Who that, and I'm impressed. I wish more episodes were like this one. I complained about the the premier episodes because they were too cluttered, and all over the place. This episode brought sanity back to the show, much more simple, perfectly Doctor Who in every which way. This really was a top notch episode, I can't rave about it enough. I just don't get the negative vibe /shrug If threads are gonna keep being this depressing I may just stop posting in them all together. Reading this thread has rather ruined my Doctor Who fun.

I have to say, as an Admiral, you must be aware by now that the DW threads are rarely if ever universally approving of any episode.

Emphasis mine.

And no, it didn't. The Doctor ditching the TARDIS was anything but sane, logical, or sensible. The EMH was almost as bad. Everyone just standing around, watching, and just letting the extras/plot drivers get "killed" while the important characters were saved from such a fate time and again, was even worse. They didn't even make an effort to stop them from being poofed out of existence. And giving a band of murderers and thieves an advanced spacecraft rather than just ditching them on an inhabited island or other safe place was probably the worst.

Terrible story, terrible storytelling.

I seriously doubt this was anything like classic Who. How weird would it be to see that as a positive in the first place?

I voted for Amy's Booty, mostly 'cause I liked that caption, and I don't think cutlasses are all that.

Everyone has different likes/dislikes. It's all subjective. You liked it? Cool. I didn't like it. That's cool too.

This is pretty basic stuff, really.

And to touch on PhilyB's pillaging point... two stories into the season, the Doctor has encouraged the human race to hunt/kill the Silence and yes, is now letting some raping, pillaging, murdering pirates from the 17th century roam around space. But then, maybe they're "good" pirates.

What makes you think the pirates are raping anyone?

What makes you think they aren't? ;)

But seriously, I was quoting PhilyB's "murdering, raping, pillaging" comment so... *shrugs*

Eh...maybe all this out of character stuff is deliberate and part of the Arc? Maybe we're supposed to notice it, it's a clue?

You don't think the Silence ever killed anyone before? They killed a person for absolutely no reason in the episode we saw. Compare that to the amount of people we saw Avery kill in the episode.

I don't get why people are willing to give the Silence the benefit of the doubt. Certainly "well, they only killed one person in cold blood for absolutely no reason that we know of" isn't the strongest argument in the world.

I voted 4 out of 5 but I suspect that's a bit too high. There was a bid of piraty fun at the beginning and a bit fun hiding from the creature but it quickly got fairly pedestrian. Another automated hologram going whacky without the true crew. And, what, it'll just stabilize someone but not cure them?! Plot device. And, what, now we suddenly have a crew of space pirates?! Yeah, these 17th (or whatever) century pirates suddenly know how to fly a space ship. Ok, even with the Doctor's teaching that's just unbelievable.

Is there a sliding scale of the number of people you're allowed to kill then? It might have been different if there'd be even the slightest indication that he regretted what he's done and wants to change his ways.

And of course thinking of the Doctor's variable sense of morality can't help but remind me of last year's story in which he calls the Siluian Joseph Mengele his friend while verbally assaulting a woman for defending her family from known killers.

If there is a sliding scale you'd imagine the likes of Davros, The Master, The Cult of Skaro etc would be at the high end of it...and the Tenth Doctor was willing to give them a second (not to mention third-infinity) chance?

The AI Index score has been released and its 86, placing it in the excellent category (very surprised). So far season 6 of the reboot has scored 88, 87, 86. Thats higher than one year ago when the first 3 episodes scored 86, 86, 84

;)

Which reminds me, the pirate says Avery's killed "1000 innocent people." Exact quote.

Now keeping in line with the rule that villains aren't supposed to think of themselves as villains, shouldn't that mean that from the pirates' perspective, they wouldn't consider anyone they kill to be innocent. They'd feel there were legitimate reasons to kill those people.

No one goes around saying "I kill innocent people" unless they want people to think they're psychotic.
