Theoretical: If HBO did Sc-Fi what books would you want them to do

After I brought up HBO doing a sci-fi series in the sci-fi on TV thread, I got thinking about it some more, and I realized that most of their big shows lately have been based on books. So if HBO were to do a sci-fi series, what book or book series do you think would be a good source?

One kind would be an anthology series of various classic writers like Murray Leinster and Robert Sheckley. For a single character series, Burroughs John Carter of Mars, or FM Busby's Rissa Kerguellan books. I'd also like an Honor Harrington series.

Hyperion books. Someone will do them eventually, better be someone competent.

Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy or his Commonwealth saga.

Maybe they should also do BSG re-edited with actual swear words.

Some good suggestions already, especially the anthology idea or single character idea.

The two books I'd like to see realized in live action are Vinges A fire Upon the Deep and Andersons The Stars are Also fire.

I realize the hive-mind medieval dogs and the intelligent seal culture would be difficult to show on a TV budget. One can always hope...

The Mars Trilogy! It's begging for a big budget, Game of Thrones-esque adaptation. There's also enough meat there to get five or six seasons out of it, I think, depending on how much you want to compress or stretch the story.

Hyperion, Rama, anything by PKD (starting with Ubik).

Neil Gaiman seems to be a correct answer, considering that American Gods is at least being looked at by HBO in script form. That's the only actual sf/f show listed as being in development by HBO this year, unless you count this one just because it sounds fun:

Hobgoblin - "Drama about a group of con men and magicians who battle Hitler and the Hazis during WWII." Michael Chabon is Executive Producer.

Feels like it might need more than just the 10 episodes, though. Just getting enough of the travelers' stories feels like it would take a good chunk of that, and then you need to set up the actual frame story, wreck an entire civilization, etc...

But I want to see it. Even at a season per book, could work out pretty well

TERRY BROOK'S shanara series or isaac asimov's foundation saga beining with the robot books.

Which one? The one by Ben Bova or the one by Kim Stanley Robinson?

I want to second Scrawny71's call for a Peter F. Hamilton space opera series. Preferably something set in the Commonwealth universe, but not necessarily part of the existing books. I'd love to see those interstellar railroads!

This would be my choice as well.
