As a note: Should finish Season 1 in a day or two, and I am surprised on how bad some people think it is. It not great by any means, but its good popcorn SF with only one or two real stinkers.

A wonderfully malformed one that only could come out of mine, Or Kosh's mouth.
The intent was "I see that the producers are setting up the series a epic that has a scope on the same scale as a wagerian opera.

Both. I don't know all the details, but I think it goes something like: Certain parties were unhappy with O'Hare as a leading man. At the same time O'Hare wanted to return to New York theater. And also at the same time JMS started to realize that he was heaping too much story onto one character. All those factors came together to form the decision.
Story-wise, originally Sinclair was planned to be the main character for all five years, but the decision was made after the first season to change to a new CO and to connect a couple of particular plot points to the new character instead. Not to get in to too much spoiler territory here, but Sinclair still plays a part in the story after season one as well.
I was just curious, watched the first episode of season 2 but will leave it at that for now.

Points of Departure... I like it, but it's an odd episode. Almost like a second (third?) pilot to introduce Sheridan. Revelations gets things back on track nicely, and could well be called "Chrysalis Part 2".
Then to be honest I find the rest of early Season 2 to be a bit of a drag. But episode 9, The Coming of Shadows, is when B5 truly begins to shine and show it's full potential!

Well points of departure was awkward. you are correct in that it felt like yet another Pilot episode as its main goal was to introduce the new commander.
Babylon Squared was a very good episode. I am guessing we will see Zathras again at some point. The nice thing is that there is a lot of little hints thrown about the episodes, no wonder people rewatch B5
The Question of Mercy I enjoyed, a simple tale and once the prisoner escaped I figured out what was going to happen really quick as it a common trope/formula. I just realized that Bill Mumy was the kid in Lost in Space, kinda like it took me a few episodes of watching to figure out Delenn was the same actress that was in Lost. and a nice "Ewww" when you figure out the body part that was used in the cheating.
In Legacies I suspected the entire time that the body was never placed on the station. It was nice for me to be wrong.
and now...
Chrysalis - now this is how you do a season final. A lot was going on and I am still adsorbing it. The funny thing that got me go "wooa" was not the president blowing up, not Garibaldi getting shot (Though who betrayed him was a surprise but yet logical at the same time.) and not Delenn going into a Cocoon. But when the shadows show up talking to Morden, and Morden is talking as a near equal to the shadows.

I love the scene when the other guy puts the pitcher of water down there, and Londo says "does it seem cold in here?" Classic.
That was classic. It is funny when you don't know what it is...and classic once you know what it is.
I suspect that I will knock out a couple episodes tonight.
Finished the first four episodes of s2, the Technomages I thought where cheesy, but the Cortez was awesome. Though it is nice to see someone who gets hurt badly have a hard time recovering on TV. The bit where garibaldi is thinking of suicide was so well done and subtle.

Next is In the Beginning.
I was wondering if any of the other spin-offs deal with what happened on Centauri Prime between the last two episodes of season 5.
