A mummified corpse believed to be the remains of former B-movie queen Yvette Vickers was discovered last week in her home. She may have been dead for nearly a year, according to police. The cause of death has yet to be determined. She was 82.

Damn, that sucks.

I'd already posted here in SF/Fantasy. Maybe someone can merge?

But yeah...whether we knew her or not, no-one deserves fate like that. And always feel slight tinge of sadness at death of B-movie/early SF stars who helped establish the genre and make it iconic...

That is sad on many levels.
I have to assume the house was paid for so no mortgage bill coming in or inquiries by debt collectors. What about utilities? Even if bills ceased from being unpaid after 2-3 months that means someone came out there and disconnected them. Would that not be long enough for some crewman to casually be looking around thinking, "things are off here" or maybe those guys see overgrown miskept properties alot even when people are alive on the property.

What about other mail? Junk ads and the such. The piece said the neighbor noticed cobwebs and yellowing mail in the open mailbox. Seems even mail service had ceased otherwise a good postal carrier would notice the overflow and carry the mail to a doorstep. I've known that to be true of mail carriers. Cobwebs don't form in an 'active' space as small as a mailbox afterall.

What about the broken window? I suppose a storm could've caused that. Especially if nothing was missing.

At age 82 I guess your direct family is limited even if you have grown kids(did she?). She must not have had any friends or an agent that tried to get her autograph/convention appearances. The article didn't say, do we know if she had been in poor health for something?

So sad, mummified and forgotten by the world. :(

If she had enough money in her account, it could be a long time before the bills stop being paid, it's not like you have to actually do something like sending money.

True. I was typing/thinking so fast I forgot about the possibility her account was set up on a draft.

Still what about mail?
What would cause even junk mail to stop being delivered? I have to think even veteran B-list horror queens can't stop junk mail.

Where I live, if too much mail builds up in your mailbox, they just stop delivering to you and they leave you a note saying you have to go pick up your mail at the post office. No postal worker in this day and age is going to bother getting out of their vehicle to go knock on doors.

Wow - I can't believe it was a year before someone found her. To me, that is so sad, to have no one. Because that is basically what that means. If you are gone for an entire year and no one even notices....man, that is really depressing.

Depends where you live. Granted, we live in a small town, but we know our local mailmen by name (Hi, Dave! Hi, Adam!), they drop our mail off on our front porch, know our dog by name, chat about the weather, wave to us as they drive by, etc. It's not impersonal at all.
