Pretty convenient that Peter pops up right next to a dedication plaque with a "future date" on it. 
In a way they dumbed it down for the audience here. They should have just shown a glimpse of One World Trade Center and have the Internet nerds figure out the rest for themselves IMO.
Travelling forward to a terryfing future was extremely overused as a plot device on Heroes back in the days. I hope Fringe can avoid doing it every season from now on...

I loved it. Fun to see Sam Weiss in the action, but not be the man with all the answers-- "It's not supposed to happen this way!" The way Astrid knows how to get through to Walter (tapioca pudding!) and take care of him, I love how that has evolved. (Remember when he drugged her and she was pissed at him and wouldn't even talk to him for a while? How they have grown.) The way the show picks up threads that were begun a year or two ago and bring them back to drive the story forward. Totally unexpected twist at the end (I didn't watch Heroes, ha).
The scene between Walter and Olivia-- "If only you saw yourself the way I see you"-- was sublime. John Noble is just superb, the nuance and depth he's brought to the character. (Both versions of him.)
And I know there are people who could just lose the whole "the fate of the universes hinges on this love relationship" part and be happy, but for me, it's the glue that holds it all together. This whole idea of Peter and Olivia being destined to arrive at this moment... it is just perfect for a romantic like me. And it took her 3 years, but she finally said "I love you" again.
The relationships between all the characters, the way they ebb and flow, has been the best part of the show for me.

Exactly! I love the Peter/Olivia relationship because it is integral to the plot - not just because of any 'shippy reasons.
It "I love you scene" with Peter going to the machine, but not saying it back except to "wish me luck" was SO Han/Leia I had to giggle a little.
But, overall, an excellent from me!
Anyone get a Rambaldi vibe when Olivia's face turned up on the old manuscript? It's her version of Page 47.

So Im wondering when John Connor is gonna run into his first Terminator in the Future? At least we should get to see what happened to him after the cancelled T:SCC.
But anyway, I digress. I definitely wasnt waiting for or looking for the switch up at the end. Its like they got bored with the seasons arc and couldnt figure out what to do with it. So they just tossed a bunch of ideas into a hat and picked one. Pretty sad imho.

Is it possible that what we saw at the end of the last ep was the future of an Amalgam universe?
I thought that it was interesting that they went out of their way to show us the New World Trade Center from Earth 1 and then the existence of Fringe Divison units from Earth 2.
If the two universes merged then technically Walternate would be correct...his world would be gone.
The folks that create this show have shown a fondness for DC comics. Anyone who read Crisis on Infinite Earths knows that the new Earth that was created from the merger of the five surviving worlds, despite having elements of all five worlds, was largely a modified version of Earth 1. Equally significant is the fact that in Crisis, those that were at the epicenter of the crisis at the dawn of time survived even if they should have been erased from the new history. This might explain how Walternate is present if hisbworld was "destroyed"

Entering Dollhouse series finale territory.
Yes, this was my thought as well. Or, even, a third timeline which was created due to the merging of the two universes. Peter was reacting as if he had grown up in the alternate universe but of course that never happened. It seems to point to a different adult Peter with a different set of memories and as we know things did not play out that way in either the prime or alternate universes. Third universe? Merged universe with new time line? Or Peter just behaving randomly due to his injury? It's an interesting question.

^ That reminds me of something I just read in an interview somewhere. In it they talked about how since their isn't any kind of limit to the number of alternate universe out there, they could pretty much continue on forever. It did almost sound like they're considering adding more universes to the show's storyline.
I couldn't agree more. There have been so many moments where he was simply spectacular in his performance that I found myself practically screaming "Give this man an Emmy!" He really does deserve it. His progression as a character has been totally fascinating to watch.
