Tell me of drinks of yore, of drinks you've had with tales to tell, and of drinks that keep you merrily in the mood to listen to them.

Today is a Negroni day... had one over lunch and just had another now at home. More, I think, will follow. Very under-rated drink and simple to make too (gin, campari, sweet vermouth in equal proportions, over ice, and with a little orange peel). Perfect for a sunny day!

I don't drink a lot of cocktails, but if I had to go with one, it'd easily be the Caesar. They're great in the summer.

Caipirinha. But I couldn't begin to explain what's in it or how you make it. Ice, lime, sugar, mint....suffice to say it's sweet and alcoholic. Never had it in Brazil, but enjoyed among Brazilians on a hot day in London is probably the next best thing. (I've had bellinis in Harry's Bar and apple sours in Rainbow Room, but pale in comparison)

Cocktails would a pill combination be allowed in this line up? say like the ones I am on?

I don't do the alcoholic drinks anymore for like almost 14 years now... go figure, they did not mix well with the medication cocktails LOL.. ;)

I love cocktails, but only the ones without alcohol. I don´t know the names though..hmm, but I like them when they are not too sweet, but with lemon and such. Don´t like them with coconut. Love that they are colourful and have all those tasty fresh fruits surrounding them, especially when pineapple is there too.

And a story about a cocktail... the last time I bought a cocktail it was in a casino and I tried myself at Roulette and failed misirably. Won a few times and then streched my luck and lost. *sigh* There went the dream of millionair. ;)

Since my recent travels in Venice (that's Venice, Italy), I've been growing very fond of Spritz (white wine, Campari bitters and seltzer, over ice and with a slice of orange).

Since the last few summers I've come to appreciate the Mojito (white rum, sugar, lime, seltzer and mashed mint leaves), but it's mostly a beach cocktail for me.

Another favourites of mine are Martini&Coke (sweet vermouth and coke), and the classics Gin Lemon and Screwdriver. When I was younger, I used to drink stronger cocktails like Blue Angel (gin, cointreau, curaçao) and White Lady (gin, cointreau, lemon juice), and also something we call Invisible (gin, cointreau, vodka) but I don't know the international name for it. However, I've come to realize they are not in my range any more.

I don't often mix myself a full-blown cocktail, though I do enjoy long drinks--either lemon soda and cognac, or grapefruit soda and gin.

When I do mix a cocktail, it's generally either a whiskey sour (bourbon, lemon juice, sugar) or a brandy alexander (cognac, creme de cacao, and coffee cream).

On the rare occasions I have a cocktail, I prefer "sissy drinks" like frozen Margaritas and Strawberry Daquiris, Sex on the Beach, Pina Coladas, etc.

I never got in much trouble back when I drank a lot. I was always the guy on the corner stair who woke up and said, "Did we have fun?"

Years ago, our whole family went to dinner at The Hungry Fisherman in Charlotte, North Carolina to eat. I had a terrible case of the flu, but wanted to be with the group so I went. They used to serve Pina Coladas in a large glass mug that looked like a lighthouse [their logo]. Unbeknownst to me, my dad had the server keep refilling my mug with Pina Coladas. I vaguely remember my youngest half-brother taking my car keys... then waking up two days later on Dad's sofa feeling great, with no trace of the flu!!

Caipirinha. But I couldn't begin to explain what's in it...

Caipirinhas are the Brazilian tranny sister of a mojito. Personally, I'm happy to swing both ways.

Something should come up with a proper recipe book for illicit drug cocktails. Say, two uppers for each downer? So you can mix coke and speed, but if you then decide drink booze, you should stay off the xanax. That's responsible drinking, right there, surely...?

Martini. Gin. The only way a martini should be had. 2 olives, preferably blue cheese.

You're sick individual; bad things will happen to you. Probably involving used cocktail sticks.

You usually add virgin in front of the name of boozy version. Either that or come up with deliciously (revoltingly) cutesy name like a Shirley Temple or Roy Rogers.

Actually, if you want a mocktail, one of the best is a Gunner. I think that's what it's called anyway. It's lemonade, ginger beer (the non-alcoholic kind), squeeze of lime and a dash of Angostura. Good summery drink.

I never knew they existed as an official drink though; I invented them independently, I swear, and then was incredibly disappointed when someone told me it already existed as a mocktail recipe. Foiled again! Though I used diet Sprite in mine instead of lemonade.

The three-fingered barman in the Barbados Hilton mixes (mixed? duuno if he's still there) a mean mojito.

Curacao is potent stuff. First day in university we had an official meet & greet where they served 3 different cocktails: White, Blue and Red (or maybe it was Green, I forget..). Unsurprising the Blue was very, very heavy on the curacao.

I don't think a mojito's a gay drink.

Depends on how many pink paper umbrellass are added sureyly?

You're a very civilised gent. Brandy Alexanders are killer cool.

That's the mark of a good father! Leaving aside simple things like a G&T, I think a Pina Colada was possibly the first cocktail I ever had. Either that or a daiquiri. Still kind of like them as an occasional silly treat, but they have an insan e amount of calories in them.

I've always made brandy alexander like a milkshake: brandy, creme de cacao, and icecream. Mmmmmm.

Me too. But only have mojitos when caipirinhas aren't available. (Is this beginning to sound like a Spartacus 'snails and oysters' moment?)

brandy alexander (cognac, creme de cacao, and coffee cream).
Never tried it, but it sounds awesome.

Mmmm...cream, chocolate and alcohol (in my dreams, sadly)

Since I am a diabetic [6 years now], I rarely drink them either. When my fibromyalgia causes insomnia, I drink a nightcap to help me sleep. :techman:

This is probably the most wonderfully decadant creation ever.

I don't know if you can still do this - it's been a while since I worked wards - but you used to be able to prescribe booze to patients. It's probably been removed off most hospital formularies in the hidebound world we're supposed to live in now. It was kept in a little locked cabinet, alongside the controlled drugs. It was not uncommon to prescribe patients a tot of brandy or something similar, to help them sleep, and avoid them waking up in pain in the night. Especially the older gents who were a bit too fond of their nightcaps or the older ladies who were a little too appreciative of a small sherry. You had to actually write the drink up on their drug chart. Nowadays they get zopiclone or temazepam instead, I'm sure. I'm not convinced this is an improvement.

StolenThunder, or anyone else currently working wards in the UK: can you still prescribe booze these days? I don't mean using ethanol to treat methanol poisoning, I mean as a little drink of an evening?

Gigolo Martini ~ Vanilla Vodka Shaken with Passion Fruit Syrup, Passion Fruit Puree and Finished with Prosecco. Served with half a passion fruit with ignited spirit within ~ first time I tried it I complained to Son (he works at the restaraunt) that 'someone had set fire to my fruit' :D and I wonder why he cringes when I go in

Or Marmalade Martini ~ Gin, Cointreau and Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice Shaken with a Generous Spoonful of Marmalade. I have mine with vodka, I'm not a gin lover.

All available at happy hour for a mear £4! Bargain~atious :mallory:
