New Voyages/Phase II

What's the deal with The New Voyages, Phase II fan production? Is it any good? Dorothy Fontana and Jon Povill are involved, which makes me excited for the potential, but it is a fan production with amateur actors who I'm sure are doing their best. What do TOS fans think of Phase II?

Like anything else... it's pretty hit or miss. Some episodes like Enemy: Starfleet! are pretty good. Others like Blood and Fire: Part One are off-putting, I disliked it so much I haven't (and never want to) seen the second part.

I agree that it has its ups and downs. It's definitely a fan production, so you can't expect professional quality at every level. Still, as you've noticed, they've done well enough that professionals have decided to become involved. There are frequent cast changes, due to various personal commitments. They've gone through two or three each for Chekov, Uhura, Sulu, and Spock. So, that can be disorienting. I would say that the overall quality of the acting is "okay." Some are good, some aren't very convincing.

The sets and props are great, the photography is pretty good, and the editing is decent. The scripts have generally also been decent. The VFX is generally good. Sometimes, it's outright excellent. Occasionally it's poor, especially in the earlier episodes. The SFX and music are also good.

So, if you're interested in fan productions, by all means give it a shot. For the most part, they're done episodically rather than with story arcs. So, it doesn't make a great deal of difference what you watch first. Just don't start with Blood and Fire, Part 2. The latest, Enemy: Starfleet! also references Blood and Fire. Not to a great degree, but it has what would be considered a major spoiler to Blood and Fire.

Personally, I recommend the episodes with George Takei (World Enough and Time) and Walter Koenig (To Serve All My Days).

I know that World Enough and Time is mentioned a great deal as being the best. But I personally didn't find it all that compelling. Tried twice to watch it and fell asleep both times about fifteen minute mark.

My personal favorites are Come What May and Enemy: Starfleet!.

It's generally pretty darn good, and is just a new medium, so to speak, for fan fiction. As fanzines are dying out, fan films are coming to the forefront. Speaking as someone who does both, I think it's a good thing.

When you look at the amount of interest Phase II in particular and fan films in general generate, I have to believe that there's a huge market that's going unserved by the traditional networks and cable channels. This at a time when the networks are in a state of panic watching their influence fade away, both in terms of absolute numbers and percentage of audience.

If you look at the kind of quality that can be turned out by volunteers of mixed training and talent in all elements of the production, along with absolutely minimal budgets you can only wonder what a professional production company could do with a minimal (by their standards) budget.

It's head and shoulders above the other fan films.

But it's not a huge time investment... why not just go ahead and watch them? ;)
My own personal opinion - skip episode I - In Harm's Way. I wasn't crazy about
the modern-day scenes
, it kind of broke the suspension of disbelief too much.

To Serve All My Days was pretty mind blowing. Check that one out for sure.

World Enough and Time
is my favorite.

I agree completely.

Barbara Luna in the role of seductress--pirate-dressed villainess, absolutely, but seductress--uh, no. And I couldn't believe that there were 200 people in each of those interceptors. 200? Maybe if they were the size of Mego action figures"
.

Phase 2 has done some remarkable story-telling at times, and hasn't met its own bar a few others. This episode is one of those for me, but hey, it might be for you.

Personally, I prefer "World Enough and Time" far more than this one.

Given the particular and specifically-referenced abilities of Luna's character, I didn't find that difficult to accept.
I had no problem with that aspect, either. Sadly, it's undermined by the execution of the idea. Kirk's POV of her when she tries to seduce him is laughable, as all that happened was she features a terrible wig. Had she totally changed appearance or something, it would have worked, but her hair? Really? Does that mean he can see through her cheap trick? I literally guffawed at that moment.

If Luna had been replaced a la "The Man Trap" with a younger version of herself, I probably wouldn't have had a problem with the scene.

You know, something that both amused and annoyed me about the TNG episode "Angel One" was that here they were using the old, old TOS conceit of featuring a planet with some social/political aspect that tracks our contemporary world one-to-one (in the minds of the scriptwriters, apparently)...except for something obvious: to maintain this simplistic parallel the leaders of that world would almost certainly have been women of the age, bearing and temperments of Hillary Clinton, Olympia Snowe, Nancy Pelosi, Linda Murkowski...you get the idea. There would also likely have been a considerable age differential between the politicians and the men with whom they decorated their offices and homes.

But they didn't do that because too many folks would have found it icky.

^^^And yet that might've given the satire some teeth!

Exactly.

Too many Trek scripts "tackle issues" with all the depth of South Park's Mr. Mackey, and this was one of them.

"I want to explain to you kids about Sex discrimination. Sex discrimination is Bad, Mmkay?"

I watched "Enemy:Starfleet!" I liked it. It was a good yarn. It could have very well have been an episode of TOS.

The actress who played the villain was very good. The guy who plays Kirk is starting to grow on me, and the I liked the interplay between Kirk, his nephew, and Chekov.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Defining series as a fan film that has completed and released at least four episodes (hoping to avoid the wrath of the Exeter fans...) Phase II is my favorite fan series. I haven't watched Hidden Frontier's final offerings yet, I've been told they are also very good, and I also love Star Trek: Intrepid. The stuff I recommend is listed here: http://startrekreviewed.blogspot.com/2009/06/1.html

It constantly amazes me what these young people do on their own time and using their own funds. They do it just out of love for Trek, and considering their resources, I think they turn out a hell of a high quality product. Check out all the episodes, and support them if you can.

Woo hoo! Someone thinks I'm young!
