The Master to return?

At a recent Doctor Who screening in New York, Moffat suggested that Simm could reappear in a future episode.

"After [his last appearance] he'd been saying, 'I think now that David [Tennant]'s left as the Doctor, I would have to leave the Master'.

I personally would have the doctor land somewhere and find out something unusual is happening(Everyone is healthy)

The Doctor then discovers that the master is behind all this but he looks different.

I think as we've discussed in other threads about the return of the Master that we would see him but as a different actor having regenerated again or somehow changed his appearance. I know that after "Sherlock" aired we had some musings that Benedict Cumberbatch could be a possible replacement for Jon Simm.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Doctor wandering around in the masters past as he's setting up the election.

"As long as I'm holding my breath, he can't tell that I'm a Time Lord."

I think Cumberbatch has more of a Doctor vibe than a Master vibe (wasn't he an early choice for the Doctor before Smith got the role?). I'd love to see the next Master closer to the Derek Jacobi end of the scale rather than the John Simm end.

^ I believe he auditioned for the role yes, and Matt Smith auditioned for Watson. I know he's got a Doctor vibe but I personally think he'd make an amazing Master.

Benedict Cumberbatch didn't want his face on lunch boxes. So he turned them down

Cumberbatch said: 'David and I talked about it but I thought it would have to be radically different.‘And anyway, I didn’t really like the whole package - being on school lunch boxes.'
Although starring in the sci fi series did not appeal to Cumberbatch, his actress mother Wanda Ventham clearly liked the idea.

It's not necessary to rethink and recast the Master every time they do the Doctor. Davies' reasoning was sound in wanting a younger, more energetic Master to match Tennant, but that doesn't mean his version of the Master is even a little inappropriate for Smith.

It's not necessary...but if Simm doesn't want to return in the role then they'll have to. Especially if Jon believes that his Master is connected to David's Doctor.

*sigh* Everyone on Tumblr keeps taking Moffat's quote as saying that John Simm WILL be back, and I finally just have to air my thoughts...

No, people, just because Moffat said that Simm said he is willing to come back as the Master, it doesn't mean Moffat will bring him back when the Master shows up again.

I'm rooting for the Master to come back as a woman, actually.... :)

^Yeah of course he will, and actually I have no problem with him remaining as Simm for the forceeable future, assuming he and Smith bounce off each other well. I don't subscribe to the notion that the Master should always be some kind of reflection of the Doctor....then again I don't think he should always be a guy with a beard either :)

I wouldn't want to see Cumberbatch as the Master (although I think he'd make a better Master than a Doctor)

I wouldn't mind seeing Simms come back if we simply HAVE to have the Master return. I'd love to see Moffats take on the character.

Please don't let Benedict Cumberbatch play The Master! Please!

He's to be the 12th Doctor! ;)

Oh don't be silly. He's got ten more seasons of Sherlock to finish first.

You're all being far too inside the box.

In my mind there's only one name I can think of who could possibly full Sims shoes.

"Arthur Darvill".

Quite so. The Master has come out of worse scrapes then this without any explanation. I worry not. The Master will return.

Ah, Wanda Ventham, one of my first great teen crushes. She was in 'The Lotus Eaters' and, more for this board, 'UFO'.

With his dark visage, Cumberbatch would be a good Master.

Was there even an attempt to explain how he came back after the McGann movie? If that is considered canon, then whatever fate befell the Master must also be, right? Honestly, I can't remember what happened to the Master at the end of that one...

It was sort of explained. Kind of.

The Master merely stated that he was "resurrected" by the Time Lords to fight in the Time War.
