Beyond a gigantic protective wall of ice in the utmost north of Westeros something cold stirs. Robert Baratheon, the king of Westeros, arrives with his royal retinue at Winterfell south of the Wall to seek the help of his old friend Eddard Stark in ruling his kingdom. At the same time on a different continent, the last survivors of the previous Targaryen regime are seeking a new alliance to acquire an army to take back their kingdom from the "usurper" king Robert.

We may need a separate spoiler-filled discussion thread for those who have read the books.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

Does anyone know how much ground the first episode is going to cover? I'm currently reading the first book, and I'd like to watch this, but I also don't want to spoil myself.

The multiple critical reviews of the first 6 episodes or so that are up on AintItCool are lining this up as the next The Sopranos

Which is just about right frankly. And HBO appear to be up for renewing it for a second season on Monday if the numbers for Sunday are good enough

Hugo - seems they got it mostly right...

I checked on Metacritic earlier today, and it has an 82 on there.

The first episode ends with the line "The Things I do for love". If you've read the up to that point, you'll know what it means.

Ooh, that's a good end point.

Peter Dinklage must have enjoyed making this episode.

Not terribly impressed. I'm finding the acting rather stiff. Hope it gets better.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

I didn't think the acting was abysmal especially considering the number of child actors in it. I thought it was pretty good overall, though not perfect. It suffered from occasionally jarring cuts just because of all the different storylines going on.

I bought the book once but never got around to reading it. A bad habit of mine. I enjoyed this episode although I was confused as to what was going on. So much of it going on. But I'll definitely continue watching.

Always liked Sean Bean. He always has that bugged out look of horror on his face.

May watch it tonight, durin' one of the encore presentations.

I saw the first book today, with the series cover...looks pretty dense. And heavy, too, for a mass market paperback.

Tyrion has the best lines, especially bantering with Jaime. "Close the Door!"

It's 835p, and it's the shortest and only one that is under 1000p in paperback. So far the longest is the third at 1216p.

Fairly good so far. Probably my two biggest complaints so far are with the music (frankly kind of "meh", even the main theme) and the pacing. Really sort of felt like they rushed through things just so they could end on the "The things I do for love" cliffhanger. I hope they take a step back and slow things down a little after this.

I thought the pilot was great. My full review is posted here.

Yeah, well, I've been readin' Star Trek paperbacks, the Sookie Stackhouse series & Jim Butcher's Dresden Files lately, so when I picked up the mmp at Wal-Mart today, it was kind of heavy.

As for the series, I'd watch this show just for the cast & production value.
