AMC and OLTL cancelled. A moment of silence for the soap opera genre

Re: AMC and OLTL cancelled. A moment of silence for the soap opera gen

Sunset Beach! Wow! Yeah, let's have a tribute thread by naming all the people who became famous that started in soaps. Really, how are people going to find acting jobs and learn the ropes without soaps?

Let's see. Demi Moore, John Stamos, Antonio Sabato Jr, ahem, Kate Mulgrew....

Meg Ryan was on As the World Turns when I watched it as a kid. Laura Harring was on Sunset Beach (although she had done stuff before that). Robin Wright was on Santa Barbara (another one I watched a lot when I was younger but I can't recall a single thing about). Anne Heche was on Another World.

I'll miss OLTL.

Part of me will miss AMC.

Another evil part of me wishes GH had been chopped instead of OLTL.

I remember when Sarah Michelle Gellar's character of Kendall came on like a hurricane, and then was toned down, I suspect because of Susan Lucci's resentment of the newcomer. At one point, I actually chose a storyline and ended my viewing cold turkey, relying for a time on synopses until finally I could see no characters that were even familiar to me. That ended my addiction, but I still have some fond memories. Dramatic shows on 5 days a week for an hour at a time for decades? It may happen again, but I don't see it being soon.

Zap2It has put up a gallery of famous actors who either appeared on or got their start on OLTL and AMC: the list includes Nathan Fillion of Firefly, Colm Meaney of Star Trek DS9, Hayden Panettiere of Heroes, Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Michelle Gellar and even Tommy Lee Jones.

Some good ammo here if anyone disputes the point about soap operas being valuable training grounds for actors:

Its pretty sad that the main criteria of whether a show is put on is how much it costs. I think at this rate the only thing left to watch is going to be reality shows.

I hope the writers of these soaps decide to send the shows out with a bang instead of a whimper.

Blakes 7 ending anyone? ;)

I remember watching AMC with my deceased great-grandmother.It's been awhile since I watched it(10 years or more.I was shocked to hear it.I will catch the last episode whenever that will be.

It will take awhile but actors of scripted shows will just have to adjust to being paid what actors of reality shows are. The production values of General Hospital are not much higher then those of "The Real XXX"

never realy watched soaps except for dallas , pasions , and dark shadows in rerun formates . most of the time I was either in school or work to watch daytime tv . if anyone is missing there shows you could allways catch it on the soap network.

The 80s/90s gave us a lot of great nighttime soaps--Dallas, Falcon's Crest, Knots Landing, Melrose Place(the original not that horrible CW remake), 90210(not the CW one).

^ That's a good one.

It's those "not taking themselves too seriously" moments that make OLTL & GH better than the rest.

My mom is sad about this, but is resigned. I think even she knew it was ending. And thankfully, she's been weaned off thanks to her granddaughters watching PBS Sprout and Disney Junior.

Opera might save the shows for her own network!

I'll miss AMC. I watched it back in the 80's when Phoebe was raising hell and Kelly Rippa came to town. I saw Adam Chandler move in, I saw a great story line about AIDS, the first black super couple Jesse and Angie. Lots of history.

All the soaps I watched are gone or going, all but one, The Bold and The Beautiful. My favorite, As World Turns is gone, The Guiding Light, now All My Children.

A bit of television history is gone.

Why even even have daytime Emmy's anymore? Lat the daytime talk shows co0mpete with the night time ones, that'll save money too.

.

I remember rumors that they birthed the Jesse character to be with Kim Delany's Jenny character but balked at the interracial couple at the last minute.

I remember hearing about that they wanted an interracial couple too. But I liked Jesse and Angie, I think they made the right choice.

I have never watched these two soaps...but I did watch the last couple of years of Dark Shadows when I was in elementary school, and later watched General Hospital for a couple of years in high school.

I'll be sad to see these shows go. I mean, they used to be the trashiest things on TV, but these days, they don't even come close! Shoot, they probably even qualify as 'quality entertainment' when you compare them to some of the trashy talk shows and 'celebrity rehab' type shows that are on these days.

I own all of Dark Shadows on DVD - took years to acquire the set (seriously - I think it took about 8 - 9 years to get the whole thing released),,,and it's not really that bad on space. It was tough on the wallet though - by far the most expensive series I own. Although granted, there are about a bazillion episodes of it.

I still haven't sat down and watched the whole thing - I watch parts here and there, is all, but I would like to watch the whole thing again sometime from start to finish. At one point, they had multiple timelines going - it really is a legitimate fantasy show, despite it's 'soap' status.

I have a girlfriend who, until it went off the air, watched The Guiding Light for her entire life. Her mother was a fan of that show...and she started watching it as a little kid - watched it to the end. I can't even imagine what it must have been like for her to lose a show that had been a daily occurrence for her entire life.

Re: AMC and OLTL cancelled. A moment of silence for the soap opera gen

I will admit to having watched the ABC soaps in the past. My mom watched All My Children when I was young, and I remember watching it with her on occasion. So I was introduced to Susan Lucci and the daytime soap genre at a fairly young age, even though I didn't necessarily understand it or find elements of it appealing. Nevertheless, by the time I was in high school, I started to channel surf over to ABC during those dull summer afternoons. It started off with just All My Children (I guess out of nostalgia from my early childhood) and then eventually spread to the other soaps in the lineup at the time. General Hospital eventually won me over completely but I would still watch AMC, as well as One Life to Live and Port Charles.

Eventually, my interest began to slip and I started dropping the soaps one at a time. GH was the last to go, but I held onto it until I just couldn't stand to watch anymore. I learned something about the soap genre that really irritated me, and continues to confuse me to this day. The U.S. soap opera genre is a closed circle. It moves in cycles, repeating itself over a long period of time. The stories are the same. The characters, even when they change, are still the same basic types. The phase "the more things change, the more they stay the same" absolutely applies to soaps. The frustrating or sheer ridiculous storylines - the kidnappings, murder mysteries, evil twins, presumed dead characters returning from the grave, baby swaps, etc. - just repeat themselves. Watch any soap long enough and you'll see the trends. The players might change a bit but the basic story is the same. Not only that, but the stories move at a snails pace and often have a surprising lack of plot development. By the time the mystery is revealed or the bombshell is dropped, viewers have grown frustrated and restless and are just ready to move on.

I can't say that I am surprised to see the genre fade. The stories aren't fresh or interesting. The casts are massive (and likely expensive) and change constantly. Viewers shouldn't bother getting too attached to soap opera characters because their average life span is so short. I wonder if soaps would do better if they had smaller, more consistent casts of characters, stories that actually have a specific beginning, middle and end, and feature writing more in the vein of primetime drama. They could even produce fewer new episodes a year so that they could save money and improve the quality of the writing. But I guess that's just not the way the format works.
