Doctor Who in American Accents

Check out this funny bit of press junket fun, now up at the Syfy news section

I think Arthur (Rory) had the best American accent; besides, he was the only one who knew that natl. stood for "national" and not "natal."

Arthur's seemed most convincing to my (non-American) ears. Matt seemed more concerned with his motivation and charcter, and Karen was just rubbish!

ETA: OT, but did you catch the clip of the little girl at Disney who wanted to join the Sith? Priceless!!

I think Matt Smith spent too much time wearing that cowboy hat. He had a bit of a weird Wild West thing going there.

Matt was using the same American accent that he used for the characters in the audiobook, Ring of Steel, which he recorded way back. In the audio, he was fine as the Doctor, his Amy was okay, and the American characters were all indistinguishable with their twang.

Yeah, I imagine all three of them would do a much better accent when they're actually performing and given time to prepare, rather than just suddenly doing it on the spot with no warning and just for fun. Darvill's was pretty good, though.

ETA: I think I misunderstood the gist of your post, Allyn, though that could be because I got next to no sleep last night.

Err, I got the name of the audiobook wrong. Ring of Steel was performed by Arthur Darvill; it was The Runaway Train that was performed by Matt Smith.

What I was trying to say, Skywalker, because I was running on no coffee when I wrote it, was that in The Runaway Train ;) Matt Smith used the same voice for the American characters that he used in the video as he read the celebrity tweets. On the spot, that might be all that he can do. :)

To my American ear
1.Arthur wins hands down. Spot-on
2.Matt is a distant second having only occasionally gotten it spot on.
3.Karen did a great impression of an American trying to do a Scottish accent.

Wasn't that hilarious? She even bowed to Vader on the spot. I just imagine the audience turning to her parents and giving them a look.

Well at least they're better at them these days. Lord I still remember some of the horendous accent attempts back in the classic series.

Yes, I just saw the one with the 6th Doctor and the space-funeral home with Richard Bucket. That DJ's accent was awful. I didn't realize it was even supposed to be American until Peri mistook it for genuine. I also didn't realize until then that Peri was supposed to be American, especially in that episode since she constantly put the emphasis on the wrong letter in "DJ."

I always thought she was supposed to have an unrecognizable accent, like Fez on That 70s Show.
