Dr. Julian Bashir

Willim Davies

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Anyone ever thought Julian was ever under appriciated during the DS9 series?
I always though he was a briliant character, but even though he had a few episodes for himself, his character was not brought out as much as it could have been

Absolutely.

While there was a decent amount of character growth, still, he was so well-developed and complex that many of us were left wanting more--a lot more.

Personally, I would've loved more James Bond programs--particularly in Season 7, with Ezri Dax taking part....;)

even though Robert Picardo played a brilliant doctor, do you think it would be better if Bashir was the EMH on Voyager?

Absolutely.

I'm torn between my desire to see Ezri in a nice dress and my deep loathing of that (bleh) pairing.

I think Julian is an amazing character, ultimately, and one who is interesting to watch with the whole show in perspective. There's a sense that even WITH the genetic secret, he still has a wide-eyed idealism about what he can do for people out on the frontier, but as the series goes on, he becomes more jaded and cynical, though he never loses the spark that makes him who he is. To be honest, I thought he was an annoying little tosser when the show was still new. He really grew into a great character though, someone who I cheered for and liked; though it wasn't overnight, and I stopped at some point (probably in season 3 or 4 somewhere) and wondered, "When the hell did that happen?"

I believe that happened when he started socialising with people like Garak and Miles O'brian, in the late 2nd series.
if you watch Melora you find Julian's "little tosser" motive gentally fades away

Who knows--perhaps seeing more of her and the good doctor in such glamourous situations would assist you in at last seeing the light in regards to the considerable positive value of said pairing. :)

Here we can agree--but frankly, such amazing characteristics are one of the many reasons why he and Ezri Dax are so compatable.

I love both characters, but because two things are good separately, it does not necessarily follow that they're good together. Though you are entitled to your opinion, Rush, no matter how wrong it may be.

As far as Siddig playing Voyager's EMH, no way. Picardo was too perfect a casting job for it. I don't think anyone else could have the unique charm Picardo had even when doling out snark by the truckload and displaying terrible bedside manner.

And personally, I try to forget Melora since I thought it was a forgettable love-of-the-week story (like all stories of its sort) that remains in my mind only because the titular character was obnoxious.

Under-appreciated? No, I really don't think so. I think his character was well-developed and had quite a bit to do over the course of the series. I don't see how they could have done much more with him without de-emphasizing another character.

I think DS9 did a good job of fleshing out all of it's main and secondary characters, actually can you even consider Garak, Kai Wyn, Dukat and Weyon secondary characters especially in the last 2 or 3 seasons?
Some of the more entertaining Bashir stories involved Garak.

Just about every time they mentioned Bashir after they learn about his genetic engineering, they mention that as well. In "Take Me Out to the Holo-suites," (I know a lot of people dislike it, but whatever) it was of minor importance that Bashir was engineered because they needed more talent to compete. (I'm surprise the Vulcans didn't claim that and try to disqualify him or something.) But it seemed all the time it was "our genetically engineered doctor!!!" and not "our doctor."

He was a good character. And in the end, he really is smarter than everyone else. He was faster, stronger, smarter, etc. than everyone else, but he hid it and blended in so well, unlike the other mutants or whatever they called themselves.

As are you, sir. ;)

Now--Rom's Sehlat brings up a good point--given that Julian's genetically enhanced with superior ability--particularly hand-eye coordination--why wasn't he the pitcher? Why couldn't he strike'm out at strategic points?

There were a ton of other situations in which his using his enhancements would have REALLY come in handy....

Maybe it was less about Julian and more about Jake? Maybe Jake's performance would've suffered in a position other than pitcher. Better overall team balance since Jake is at least decent as one.

But wasn't the focus of that ballgame to play for fun? That's what our team was focusing on, right? I mean, they truly didn't stand a chance against a team consisting of all Vulcans. And it was supposed to be Sisko's big chance, not Bashir's. Sisko was calling the shots for his team. But you're right-- it should have been Bashir's genetically enhanced pitching arm to throw and rule the day.

(I can just imagine him throwing fastballs of 180 mph, but then probably the Vulcans could hit those...)

Plus isn't it canon that he already beat a Vulcan at tennis once? Doesn't seem like he has too many qualms about using his genetic engineering to his advantage, even before it was general knowledge.
