Design the Next Enterprise

Wasn't CBS supposed to be selecting the winner from the entire pool of entries because the voting process got so screwed up? That might mean that Cryptic does indeed have to go through and weed out every invalid entry before passing the remainder up the line to CBS.

Well, didnt that Dan Stahl bloke say that picture he tweeted of the entry board was one of 5 boards? If they've only printed out that many, i'd say they've already weeded out the crap.

It's probably just CBS dragging their heels, I mean they probably dont give a toss about this, so its just at the bottom of a pile of junk they dont wanna do.

Dan Stahl's comments on the picture he posted were that they had just printed out ten entries more or less at random to show the Cryptic employees what kinds of submissions they were getting. I believe he also said something about beginning the process of weeding out the invalid entries. I don't recall him saying anything about what Cryptic's involvement in the process would be beyond that.

Edit - Actually, this is what Dan posted:
"We have just started going through the "approved" submissions - meaning that they are deemed to be valid entries. Those on the board in my pic are ten examples I threw up on the art board to show the team examples of what were submitted (we have many more to go through). It was interesting to see all the differing opinions even amongst our art team. There was no clear favorite amongst any I've posted so far. Everyone has their own person fav.

CBS will be selecting the winners from all valid available entries, so this is just for our internal fun.
This could be interpreted in a couple of different ways, but I read it to mean that they had just started the process of validating the entries and still had a long way to go. The pics on the board were probably just examples of submissions that had already cleared that hurdle. If they had to pass "all valid available entries" up the line to CBS then it seems like they would have no alternative but to validate every single entry, which could certainly be a time consuming process.

According to the interview with Dan Stahl below (skip to about 8 minutes in) CBS is doing a little more than dragging their heels here:

Well isn't that just peachy. I guess someone need to get some pliers and start pulling those teeth loose so we can find out the winner.

Hmm. If you listen in to about the 22 minute mark, he has a few more detailed comments on the Enterprise contest.

Highlights:

  • Biggest thing they're struggling with is there is no consensus on who should win. Everyone has their favorite ship but there is no clear, obvious winner.
  • Hope to be able to announce something in the next week.
  • The winning design will be considered canon by CBS. This is also part of the hold-up as they are being very particular about the selection.
  • Many of the entries have "the wrong number of nacelles" or "a different kind of configuration" than what they believe the fans will accept as a new, canonical Enterprise.
  • Cannot wait to get some of the "awesome, awesome ship designs" that are nevertheless "just not an Enterprise" into the game, suggesting that submissions other than the one ultimately chosen as the new Enterprise may be used as well.
  • Hope to announce the 25 top prize winners, top 4 and, presumably, the grand prize winner within the next week.
  • Lots of emails going back and forth "all day long" to determine those winners.
So, keying in on the part about "the wrong number of nacelles," I'm guessing that probably doesn't bode well for my quad-nacelled configuration, but oh well. Personally I don't think that should necessarily be a disqualifying feature, for me or anyone else who deviated from the usual pair. Originality was one of the primary judging criteria after all, but I guess we'll see.

^Then again, though we know yours has 4 nacelles, the powers that be who are judging may just think of them as just funky looking nacelles. I wouldn't count you out Vektor.

The winner will be considered canon? Well, unless it appears on the TV or film screen then it ain't canon.

Since they own the property, I think it's up to them to decide what is and is not canon.

Of course, the winner of this contest will likely only be "canon" until a new movie or TV series with a new Enterprise comes along.

^^ Well goody for them, but not in my book. It's always been argued that only what is onscreen counts. And unless it appears onscreen well then too bad so sad.

Besides which I still Vektor's design is the best. Now that I'd like to see onscreen.

This whole canon not canon is getting old. I went through it with the Titan. Since then it has made it into the game and a 6ft model was commission by CBS execs. Oh well canon or not I was lucky to get my design pushed as far as it did. Whoever wins will be forever part of Trek History Canon or not. Good luck to the winner

There was a 6ft model made?! You got any pics of that? I'd love to see it.

That's actually made me feel better about my - err, Nate's chances at winning.

God, I just know it. Im going to win this contest and have to hide from the limelight for fear of disqualification :p

Here are a few links of photos I was allowed to post of the 6ft Titan model and a few shots of the Kit that is out as well.

I know "NOT CANON" but pretty close...LOL

Sean

"a different kind of configuration" sounds like mine, so I'm a bit worried about disqualification myself.

[edit] The Titan looks great after saucer separation Sean :)

Thanks that was something I came up with after the contest when i design the I.S.S. Version of her.

I am more than likely DQed with my Hammerhead saucer.

Sean,

I think it's great that your entry won the Titan contest, and that you are now a part of Trek history, as whoever wins this new contest will be. But I do have to point out that Warped9 is correct. Despite what some people may think, "canon" as it refers to Star Trek is very important to a lot of people, and there has to be some kind of standard as to what's official and what's not. That doesn't mean that other works related to the brand are not good or important in their own right (i.e. some of the terrific Trek novels published these days), but the rule of thumb has pretty much always been "what's seen on the screen is canon. Everything else is either official (i.e. official reference works written by Trek production staff such as the Star Trek Encyclopedia, ST Chronology, official Trek Tech Manuals, etc.), or non-canon (i.e. novels, comic books, RPGs, video games, even those licensed by Paramount)." There's also "what's seen on the screen is canon until something else seen on the screen later contradicts it or no longer makes the former thing seen on screen canon," but that's not something that needs to be talked about right now.

Now, with all that said, if Paramount wants to call the new Enterprise-F "canon," they're more than welcome to do it, since as someone mentioned above, they own the property. However, if I had to guess, they're probably calling it canon because a) they know what that word means to fans, and b) they also know that the prime universe will most likely never be seen on screen again, so what does it really matter if a contest for a video game produces the "official" Enterprise-F? But AFAIC, it doesn't detract from the terrific originality and inventiveness that people have put into their contest entries (Dac's design is actually my personal favorite), and I'll still be insanely jealous of the winner:)

That is why i like the SW universe design sense, If it approved by Lucas and is put into any medium i.e Expanded Universe it is pretty much official in that universe.

My opinion is if Paramount/ CBS owns it and it is considered conon by them then it is.
I totally get the argument so we don't need to rehash old aguments. I agree that their focus is on the "Alternate Universe" not the "Prime Universe" anymore and the likely hood of the Ent-F or even my Titan showing up on screen is slim and none. Just be happy for the winner whom ever it is and don't argue over canon or non-canon and let them enjoy their time in the sun. That was one thing that realy pissed me off after the Titan Contest. All the crap I got over it not being "Canon" I didn't care so much if it was or not. Look at my design 6 years later. It has seen Print (Star Trek magazine, Pocket Books), incorporation into Star Trek Online, Placed into the fist stop of the Star Trek Tour before they split the tour in two and didn't want to commission a second 6ft model, and even had a Starcraft Models model put out. (where else can a fan design see the spotlight)
I was able to push my 15 minutes of fame a little farther than maybe it should of.

Let the next winner enjoy this time he or she will get. It may never hit them again or it can lead to bigger and better things. We are all fan and that is why we entered the contest to try and be apart of this thing called Star Trek, and Hay It Is THE ENTERPRISE for god's sake, who wouldn't want their name attached to that Canon or Not.

Time for me to get back off my soap box and wait for the annoucement.

Sean

My interpretation of the comments about this design being considered canon by CBS is that this is how the Ent-F will be depicted in whatever form it happens to take from here on. I agree it's unlikely we will see it on the big or small screen any time soon, but it could conceivably be featured in one of the Trek novels or maybe a comic adaptation somewhere along the line. Not to mention STO, of course.

Having said that, if they ever did decide to make another Prime Universe movie set in the 25th century time frame of the game and featuring the Ent-F, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see an entirely new design developed for it, so-called "canon" notwithstanding.
