Help with Star Trek related University Project

Hi all,

I am currently working on a project for my university that is looking at 'fan cultures' for want of a better expression and obviously Star Trek is an area of interest. I am basically a casual fan of the original series, but wondered if any of you more ardent fans, would mind answering a few questions?

Anyway if you have a few minutes spare....

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

7) Where are you based?

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Also it would be great to know what sort of active membership this forum has? Are there other, similar forums?

NB - I totally appreciate if you can't be assed answering these considering I've just registered on your forum:lol:, but I'm finding the academic literature on the subject a little predictable in its portrayal of 'Trekkies' so thought I'd go direct to the source!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

I just watch the show and may have a Starfleet mug I drink my coffee proudly out of at work... So... yeah I'm "normal".

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I've only completed TOS and DS9 but... last time I watched DS9 was like... 11 years ago. TOS I watch... like... an episode a day?

Saw a few eps of VOY, thought it was boring. I don't like TNG that much... ENT was ... idek.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

I love fanfics :(

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

I keep it to myself unless someone asks me about it. At conventions, I may have a nerd moment or two.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

Uh, its just a TV show. I don't know... I just watch it.... and like it... it makes me feel nice inside?

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

I love... heroes... and kamen rider...

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-889KBbQR7o[/yt]

and FRINGE greatest show ever.

7) Where are you based?

Higashi Furorida Shuu de

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

No.

Sci fi convention? Yes.

1. It doesnt really, my social identity isnt any different than it ever was, allthough I do kind of keep my eyes open for other trek fans, since I like talking about it.

2. All of DS9, all of TNG, some of TOS, most of VOY, none of ENT. All of the films. I havent rewatched any Voyager, but I can rewatch certain TNG and DS9 (and do) but not very often, maybe every couple of weeks Ill watch a few at once.

3. I looked through a few pieces of fan fiction, and I think its pretty awful. I would never seek it out, although it should probably be noted that I really like literature and have a very low tolerance for anything mediocre.

4. a) The only contact I have with fans is on this forum b) like i said before, I just keep an eye out for trek people. I went to get some shoes in December and had just bought The Wrath of Khan, the salesperson noted it and we had a good old talk about Star Trek.

5) I really like stories and I enjoy analysing the way they are told and how their characters interact with the wider context of the story. Trek uses very heavily defined characters, who usually embody certain values and makes an interesting dynamic. Also, you can sort of tell any story you want with trek, you can have an intellectual/abstract story, adventure, character piece, historical commentary or just classic sci-fi. There arent many shows like this.

6. Doctor Who, for the same reasons as stated for above. I also am getting into other sci fi due to trek, like Asimov.

7. Reading, UK.

8. No, but I think it would be fun!

Good luck with your work, if you want to quote any of my answers the name is L. Nimoy.

Okay.

Okay, I'm a professional Trek writer, and so are many of my friends and associates, but science fiction fandom has been a big part of my social life since my college years, a long time ago. I have many fond memories of going to see the latest TREK movie with a large group of fan friends.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I've watched pretty much every episode of all the series, with the exception of the Animated Series, which I've only sampled once or twice. I've probably watched more TOS than anything else. I seldom watch reruns of the other series unless I'm researching a book. I just don't have time.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

Nope. I only write TREK professionally these days. And, like most TREK authors, I studiously avoid fanfic so as not to be accused of stealing anyone's ideas.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

Pretty much everyone who knows me knows I'm a Trekkie.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

STAR TREK has always been an important part of my life, both as a source of entertainment and community. Not to mention employment!

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

Definitely.

7) Where are you based?

Rural Pennsylvania.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Many, many times. Especially Shore Leave.

Also it would be great to know what sort of active membership this forum has? Are there other, similar forums?

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

Everyone who knows me knows that I'm a big Star Trek fan. I'm in my first year of graduate school or cinema and media studies, and I've already done one big project on the series. It's inevitable that more will follow.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

Yes; at least twice for each series. I've probably seen the original Star Trek four or five times through.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

Nah. I barely have the time these days to read one or two professionally published Trek books per year, let alone fan fiction.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

Again, anyone who knows me in real life knows I'm a fan. Not sure as to point B.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

It's entertainment, mainly. I don't hold it that high up on a pedestal or anything.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

Yes.

7) Where are you based?

California.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Yes.

Also it would be great to know what sort of active membership this forum has? Are there other, similar forums?

I used to be a much more active member of the TrekBBS, but I only visit there a few times a year.

NB - I totally appreciate if you can't be assed answering these considering I've just registered on your forum:lol:, but I'm finding the academic literature on the subject a little predictable in its portrayal of 'Trekkies' so thought I'd go direct to the source!

You've probably already come across this, but Henry Jenkins' writing (especially Textual Poachers) goes a long way in rehabilitating academic portrayals of "Trekkies."

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?
While I'm not a closet Trekkie, I don't go out of my way to express my appreciation for the franchise. Some days, just for the Hell of it, I'll put a pin replica of the combadge on my coat shoulder to see if anybody would recognize it.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?
I haven't seen much of TOS (something I need to catch up on), but I've seen all of the films and other television series; I started watching it around the fifth season when I was only around three years old despite the fact most of my family weren't Trekkies. Overall, I've probably seen half of TNG (I've only seen episodes here and there), DS9 three times, VOY too many times to count, and ENT around twice.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?
Not really. I do enjoy writing fan fiction, but when I go back to read it, it just isn't the same as the real thing.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?
A. It just follows my geeky demeanor.
B. About the same as to question 4A.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?
By watching Star Trek, I feel enlightened to the morals, ethics, and stories told by Star Trek. While I do not follow them to the gospel, I use some towards my personal beliefs, morals, and ethics.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?
Not really. I dislike Star Wars, I've tried watching countless SciFi programs (i.e. Stargate, Babylon 5, Battleship Galactica) but none really satisfy me in a way that Trek does.

7) Where are you based?
Western Ohio, USA.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?
I wish. I've lived in an area of the country that conventions rarely visit close (in an affordable distance) enough to visit one. The only thing that is barely near resembles a convention was visiting Star Trek: The Tour in Detroit, Michigan. When I went through the exhibit the first time, it was then time that the museum was showing Trek '08 for the first time. It blew me away. After the movie, I went through the exhibit probably two more times, talking to the fans and Trekkie employees.

I was not surprised when they did not permit photography, especially because the had replicas of the TOS bridge, Guardian of Forever, Chang's captain's chair, and the TNG captain's chair. Needless to say, the prices were outlandish that I had to pass. The last go-through I had fortunately been the last, so they were starting to slow things down and close up. Luckily, one of the employees (the security guard that made sure nobody was taking photography) allowed me to be photographed on the replica TOS bridge without charging me. After she handed me the photo, she told me, "Hey, we're Trekkies. We look out for each other... unless you're actually a Ferengi." :guffaw:

As to other Trek websites, I only visit this one, primarily lurking (reading). Reading everybody's opinion and sometimes giving mine. But most of the time, it's fun to just sit back and read comments.

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

Eh. I don't walk around in a Star Trek T-shirt, but I discuss it more often than I discuss any other TV show or leisure topic.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I have seen all of the series, with the exception of Voyager, but I'm working on that one. I have seen TNG, DS9, and ENT exactly once. TOS, overall about three times through completely.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

*prepares to run* Absolutely not. Perhaps brief "What-ifs" rearranging characters in a show lineup, but nothing more.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

A) I know a few random items other people don't notice, just like everyone else. But nothing extraordinary or deep into a production-wise backstory or anything.

B) I discuss it frequently with my fellow students who are into Trek. I'll quote Star Trek and others, realizing it is from Trek, will attempt to do the same good-naturedly.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

It is a form of entertainment. It keeps me off the street and provides an outlet for my very limited creativity. (I doodle starships in the margins of my notes.)

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

No.

7) Where are you based?

Halfway up the East Coast, United States.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

No.

Also it would be great to know what sort of active membership this forum has? Are there other, similar forums?

Beats me. I found this one about three weeks ago.

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?
It has not done so in an obvious way. However, it has certainly biased me towards choosing a profession in science and medicine and it agrees with my notion of wanting to better myself and benefit others rather than persue a career to accumulate wealth.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?
I have watched all of them except for the animated series. TOS I have watched about 1.5 times, TNG and DS9 3 times, VOY 2.5 times, ENT once. Since owning all of the first 4 shows on DVD I continue to watch them repeadtedly in a cycle that takes about 7 years to complete.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?
Never have and I doubt that I ever will. However, I do read the occaisonal published Star Trek novel.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?
Not much at all really. I am not really part of any Star Trek community apart from the one on the internet. With the wider public Star Trek is mainly a non-issue from my perspective. Few people seem to watch it these days so it rarely comes up. People I speak to about it most are my brothers and Dad.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?
Probably mainly one of comfort. It's an idealised and harmonious future. It is also very familiar to me. So it's something pleasant and reliable to engage with that strongly resonates with how I would like the future to be like. It's also a medium that promotes moral awareness, tolerance and a positive outlook. So there are quite a few psychological benefits I would say. In addition, as I have already pointed out, it must have added to my interested and ethusiasm for science.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?
Yes, I generally like the genre as a whole and will watch and read things purely based on the fact that they are science fiction. However, I would only consider myself a fan of Star Trek as far as franchises go.

7) Where are you based?
England, UK.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?
Never and I'm doubtful I ever will. I'm not the fancy dress type of fan. If I ever had a child that would be desperate to go I might consider it.

Doubt this will be of any use, but if it's genuinely for academic purposes...

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?
I would suspect only in so far as might be considered 'geeky' appropriate for interest/career in technology. Other than that has no bearing as never comes up and no-one would suspect interest. None of social friends, family or partners have ever shared interest in Trek. Kind of a guilty secret. Hence why this site useful :)

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?
Not quite. VOY, DS9, TOS, ENT and currently up to season 5 of TNG. Never watched any series more than once, but have watched some seasons/episodes of VOY, DS9 and TOS several times.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?
No. Despite love of sci fiction...

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?
a) my only contribution to Trek community is 3d game models. But I do consider it an important contribution: a quid pro quo for those who've also contributed to Trek.
b) not at all

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?
Only value is enlightenment/intellectual challenge alongside the drama.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?
Only literature. Unless you meant other shows/formats :)

7) Where are you based?
UK

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?
No. But would like to one day...

I wouldn't say it does.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I haven't watched all of TOS or any of TAS
I've seen all the movies, and every episode of TNG, DS9, Voy and Ent, some episodes only once or twice, most several times. All of the spin-offs tend to show on UK tv quite regularly, and it's the kind of show that if I'm home, I'll put it on in the background.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

Not really, at least not any more. I used to read it, I never contributed any.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

It doesn't really, aside from the odd internet forum, or if it happens to come up in conversation. I sit next to a proper trek-fan at work these days so she and I often discuss it.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

I value it highly. Star Trek, at least when I was younger, was something I could turn to when everything else was against me. I could immerse myself in its universe, I guess it was a form of escapism. Nowadays, I'm married, have a kid on the way and a cat to be eaten by, so i don't need the 'escape', but I wouldn't trade my experiences of Trek for anything.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

I'm a huge fan of Transformers, I grew up with it as a kid - a few years before discovering Star Trek, and the recent revival has really re-awakened my interest. I contribute to Transformers wiki sites, am a member of several forums and have produced video-blogs on the subject.

Aside from that, I enjoy most sci-fi, but wouldn't call myself a fan of any of it.

7) Where are you based?

Bournemouth, on the south coast of the UK.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Once or twice as a teenager, though I'm not a huge convention lover.

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

Well, friends and family know I'm a fan, and I do attend conventions (great place to meet people who have something in common) but I don't go around saying "Live long and prosper" or "Make it so." I don't wear Trek T-shirts and my Trek collection consists solely of DVDs and novels. (No action figures or other stuff).

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I've seen all of the series and movies. I've seen Star Trek and Enterprise the most are the only series I have on DVD. I also have a handful of the films (I only buy what I really like).

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

I just finished my first fan-fic. It was a "history challenge" where you had to write a story set in the past (we were each assigned a different historical period) using Trek characters. I've read some fan fiction that was recommended to me.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

I belong to several forums. I attend conventions.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

First of all, it's fun. Best of all, conventions give me an opportunity to meet people I "know" online who, in some cases, become friends in RL.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

Absolutely. I've been a sci-fi and fantasy fan since I was a kid, long before I got into Trek.

7) Where are you based?

I live about 45 miles north of Syracuse, NY.

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Oh, yeah. My first was Shore Leave (2006), my next one was Seatrek Alaska (2007, a convention held on a 7-day cruise), Creation Vegas (2008), Creation Parsippany, NJ (2009), Vegas (2010).

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

Not much. I'll discuss it if it comes up, but I don't run in a uniform when I go out to the local Wendy's.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I've watched all the series, all the episodes. Don't know how many times over.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

I used to as a child, but not now.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

People know I'm a Star Trek fan and sometimes I get poked fun at, but it's fine.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

Not really, it has as much effect as watching Lost, Criminal Minds has...

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

I watch Stargate, Andromeda, Seaquest. It's more of the quality of the show than the words "Science Fiction"

7) Where are you based?
Northern Central Ontario, Canada

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

No

]1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

Star Trek has had a large impact on my identity. As a child, I would sit on my father's lap and watch the TOS together. At that time the only thing I learned from the series is that I wanted to be like Lt. Uhura. She was beautiful, smart and had a good job, and as a kid I really wanted to be her. Since my family liked Star Trek (probably more than I did) I watched the show throughout the years and its philosophy had the greatest impact on me. I learned about how not to be prejudiced or biased in any way, how to keep an open mind and to be optimistic no matter how grim the situation is. From Captain Kirk and Picard I especially learned about duty and honor, and that when you are in charge of an organization (like I am now) you are totally responsible for not only the organization but the health and welfare of those under you. Star Trek made me a humanist, something I am thankful for. My mind is open and so is my heart, a gift I can never repay the writers/actors for.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I have watched TOS since it's original run in 1966 (as a young girl) and have watched it on and off ever since. I also like TNG. Captain Picard and his way of thinking (talk first, shoot second) really changed the way I approach things in my daily life. I did not watch DS9 or VOY because they did not have the same feel as TOS and TNG. I gave ENT a shot but was disappointed.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

I have written three Star Trek novels but have never sent them to publishers. I did them for my own enjoyment.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

The only contact I have with the Star Trek community is through the BBS. How does it manifest itself amongst the wider public, well, I talk Trek when I run into people who know Trek.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

The philosophy of the series helps me in my daily life and has helped me through a number of personal crisis.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

Yes, I enjoyed Battlestar Galactica (the original series ONLY) and early Doctor Who.

7) Where are you based? Chicago, Illinois

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention? Only one when I was in college. I found it a little strange until I me Gene Roddenberry there. It was a thrill to bump into him and Majel in the hallway. He was a very nice and very polite man. But unfortunately that meeting was the only one I had with him. I always wanted to work with him, and to learn from a man who really just wanted to bring hope and peace into this world.

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?
So far, Star Trek hasn't had much impact on my social life. I relate to Trek on a more personal level. I am thrilled though whenever I find another Trek fan out there.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?
I have watched all series except for The Animated Series and all the movies. Times watched straight through for each:
TOS - 1
TNG - 2
DS9 - 1
VOY - 1
ENT - 2
I sometimes watch individual episodes whenever I get a hankering for Trek or some aspect of it.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?
I don't actively participate in fan fiction. I've read a few stories and watched a few fan productions out of curiosity.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly -
a) amongst the Star Trek community

By becoming an active part of the Star Trek fan community, that is being here and talking to people who share my interest in Trek.

b) amongst the wider public in general?

I've used Trek-related images as my Yahoo avatar for a couple of years now and my family knows I'm a fan because they see me watching the show from time to time. If someone asks me, I'll gladly talk Trek with them, but I won't bring it up in conversation out of nowehere. That's about it.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?
Being a Star Trek fan has value to me personally because it's nice to know that I'm part of something, that I'm part of a group of people that shares certain ideas. It's a source of inner comfort.
Most importantly, I find Star Trek intellectually stimulating. It makes me think, wonder about new things, widen my area of interests and even find answers to philosophical or everyday life questions.
As a "side effect" let's say, it made me more interested in the real-world science and technology. Watching it has actually helped me get my head around scientific issues that I had previously found incomprehensible. I can say that it has literally changed the way I think about Earth and the universe as a whole.
Star Trek is also a great way to unwind and have fun, which is must appreciated.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?
Yes, I generally enjoy SciFi.

7) Where are you based?
North-Eastern Romania

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Not yet, but will do so in less than a month.

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?
Generally it doesn't. There are times when I will slip in some star trek quotes into conversation, which normally goes unnoticed, at time even by me.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I've watched all the series, all the episodes. Don't know how many times over.

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

Nope.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

People Know I'm a fan, that's about it.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

An escape from the real world, everyone has their outlets, trek is one of mine.

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

yes

7) Where are you based?
Florida, US

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

Yes. Only once, no costume, I found the more "hardcore" fans to be uncomfortable to be around. Haven't been to another since.

1) To what extent does Star Trek impact on your social identity?

Other than here, no impact.

2) Have you watched all the various Star Trek series and how many times have you watched each series?

I've watched all of TOS and DS9, most of VOY and ENT (skipping very few episodes on the basis of them being terrible) and most of TNG (also skipping bad episodes including all of S1-2).

3) Do you participate in, or enjoy fan fiction relating to Star Trek?

Used to, but I've lost interest.

4) How does your being a Star Trek fan manifest itself publicly - a) amongst the Star Trek community and b) amongst the wider public in general?

My presence here is the totality of my public fandom.

5) What do you feel is the value of being a Star Trek fan to you as an individual?

Fun to argue about (but most of what I do here is non-Trek-related, due to lack of new material).

6) Do you consider yourself a fan of any other forms of science fiction?

yes

7) Where are you based?
San Francisco, CA

8) Have you ever attended a Star Trek convention?

no
