Just how did Reg Barclay get to where he was?

Lemme guess--Geordi is your least favorite TNG character?
:vulcan:

Nah that would be first - second season Wesley, followed by Pulaski and Luaxana Troi. Geordi was just a real tool with people. I hated his attitude and even Guinan gave him lip when he was like that. When he wasn't being judgmental, just doing his job, Geordi was fine. He still towers over most of the Voyager characters. I liked him better in the movies.

This post made my day

:) Thank you, your post made mine.

You can be the best and the brightest and still suck at parties. Who would you rather have in a crunch: the guy who shows up late for staff meetings but can pull your ass out of the fire with the answer to a technichal problem? Or the guy getting laid and doing card tricks on Captain Picard Day?

Come on, Riker wasn't totally useless.

I'd personally trust the guy who can get there in time, whom I don't have to drag out of the holodeck, and is able to articulate his ideas and thoughts on a situation in a quick, efficient, manner that is understandable. Talking to Reg was a lot like talking to Lassie in that scene.

I'll choose the guy who saves me from dying. He can stutter all he wants as long as I'm still alive in the morning.

If the guy stutters and stammers to get his thoughts out then he's not going to be very effective at communicating them and time will be wasted trying to flesh them/figure them out as opposed to a man who can just blurt them out and save the nonsense. I don't fully recall that scene as it has been a while since I've seen it but I seem to recall there was a lot of stuff with Reg not really getting his thoughts out there and people having to do a lot of "Wha...?" to him to figure out what the fuck he was trying to say.

...OTOH, other Trek heroes are infamous for talking a lot but saying virtually nothing.

"What do you see, Number One / Geordi / Data / Doctor?"

"You'd better come down and have a look yourself, Sir."

And yet the guy stuttering was the one with the ideas that saved the crew... Sure, he's at a disadvantage against an equally capable engineer who can communicate clearly, but that assumes that the other engineering crew members are all as smart/knowledgeable.
