THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till release

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

One of the things that should set Thor apart structurally from other superhero origin flics is that he has his powers from the beginning, then loses them, then regains them. So, whereas a lot of these flics have relatively sedate first acts, I expect Thor to open with one of the big effects sequences towards the beginning of the film. It should be interesting to see how that works.

^ Almost like an Empire Strikes Back set up, but without being a sequel.

I'm not sure about the "lost his powers" aspect of this. I guess we'll see.

Hasn't that been one of the major parts of Thor's origin since Marvel created their character?

Well, it was the result of a very early retcon, technically speaking, but basically yes.

Yeah, Thor being "cast out" is a long-time aspect of the comic book character.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I'm not talking about him being cast out, I'm talking about him not having any powers beyond being a tough guy. I haven't read any spoilers, but I'm getting the sense that for a third of the movie, he can't even lift the hammer.

Yes, I get that. But once Blake tapped the stick, he turned into Thor, complete with hammer, powers and archaic English. Thor himself wasn't just a tough guy.

It may play just fine on screen. In comics and TV shows, the act removing a superhero's powers tends to be a lazy way of challenging the hero. Hopefully, that's not the case here.

In the Ultimate Marvel comics, they twisted it around by giving him full powers, but calling into question whether he was actually a god or just believed himself such. For a while, they did a good job of making the reader suspect he might just be crazy.

yeah, millar managed to do a good job of keeping it going even well into Ultimates 2, with it never being clear whether Thor was nuts or really seeing things others couldn't.

and then wraps it up saying, oh, yeah, he IS a god by having trolls, giant dogs, giants and Odin-only-knows what else showing up.

Because they've more or less eliminated the Blake character here, but they're going with the same premise - that in order to be taught a lesson he's brought down to Earth, literally.

I don't think they could have sold Hemsworth as Blake - the character's not Clark Kent.

Good stuff. The God of Thunder gets tazed. Welcome to earth :techman:

Kat Dennings is awesome. Apparently her role was beefed up in rehearsals and it's easy to see why. With Jane Foster as the oblivious nerd scientist, you need another character who is more focused on reacting to Thor's bizarre behavior.

I'm liking the character stuff and humor in these clips a lot more than the early sword-and-sorcery visuals (the bit in the trailer with them all in the diner is a hoot as well; Hemsworth himself comes across as a fish-out-of-water goof, which is a nice surprise). One of my best friends wants to see it with, so I'm pretty sure now that I will - particularly since it's rumored to have the next Green Lantern trailer attached.

I just watched the new trailer on the official site, and I think that was the best one yet. With this, Captain America, and X-Men: First Class it looks like it will be a hell of a year for Marvel. I just wish the Green Lantern trailer could have gotten me this excited. Hopefully the next one can redeem it.
