Did season seven really stink?

Yes it would've. We saw season 8 of TNG. It was called Voyager. Same writers who were already out of ideas despite having a brand new premise and new characters to work with.

Well, actually the Generations movie was our Season 8. It took place right after "All Good Things"

I never thought that Season 7 stunk. It had some really great episodes. In fact, Lower Decks is one of my favorite TNG episodes. I also love Preemptive Strike for bringing back Ro Laren, though I was really sad when she joined the Maquis.

That being said there were some silly episodes such as Sub Rosa and Genesis. One episode that did annoy me was Force of Nature. They seemed to completely ignore the Warp "speed limit" in DS9 and all of the TNG movies. They also ignored the "speed limit" in Voyager, but one could argue that the crew did not care about ripping up space in the Delta Quadrant. I also didn't like Journey's End, because I didn't find the Wes storyline believable. I also did not like the story in All Good Things...

Of course one of my least favorite plots of Season 7 was the Deanna-Worf relationship. Not saying it was my least favorite relationship on Star Trek, but I didn't like the D-W relationship because Deanna belongs to Riker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Season 7 was way different than the previous seasons. There was no sense of comradery between the characters...they didn't even seem to care about each other. The Worf/Troi thing was ridiculus. It was all about the "I dated you and now I'm going to date your best friend just for revenge." It was junior highish and just stupid.

"All Good Things" saved the season, but otherwise I'd like to forget 7 existed.

Okay, okay, okay. One thing at a time, because you're baffling me to be honest. What makes Masks your favourite episode of TNG? And why is All Good Things bad? I had never heard a fan defining Masks as his favourite TNG episode, this is mindblowing...

Because... well, its story behind it was so... interesting! Maybe its just the creepiness of it but Masks was a really interesting episode.

Okay, fine. Masks is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is mine.

I didn't like All Good Things... because the whole time travel concept blows and its story wasn't that finale-ish if you ask me. This seemed more like an episode that could've taken place in the middle of the series. Moreover, there were FAR too many past and future scenes than they were present. Not to mention, Picard holding his hands over his face at the end was kind of depressing to me.

The only things I did like though was seeing Denise Crosby finally reprise her role as Tasha Yar, and the court thing was interesting, to see Q wearing that same gown and hat and in that same courtroom. I would give AGT a bit more credit if Data and Troi were with Picard in those scenes like in EAF.

I mean, I'm sorry All Good Things lovers, but as great as TNG was and as great as S7 was, this season needed a much better finale.

Who dated who for revenge? Troi and Worf? What are you referring to here?

And man, that's some serious s7 hate. I laid out my thoughts on it a while back; I think it was a bit up and down compared to s3-6, but its good eps were among TNG's best. Ah well, to each their own.

By the time of Season 7, you had TNG in production, DS9 in production, Generations in pre-production, and Voyager in development. In fact, Generations even started filming it's 23rd century stuff before TNG had wrapped. And all of this was being run by the same people. Is it any wonder that some of what we saw that year was less consistent than what we'd seen in the past?

I know that Star Trek was riding high at that time, but for the folks at Paramount to think that they could have so many Trek balls in the air at one time and some of them not be dropped was unrealistic. They needed to give some more space between projects.

^ Generations had begun filming by the time "All Good Things..." was filming. They filmed the 23rd century stuff aboard the Enterprise-B first, which they could do without any of the TNG cast, so they could start before TNG wrapped. When "All Good Things..." wrapped, the cast had something like a one or two week break, and then started filming the 24th century portions of Generations.

Going to Memory Alpha and checking things out individually will get you more detailed results, but the ones I know about for sure are Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, Brannon Braga, and Ron Moore. They were all big forces when TNG was in its stride. Piller, Braga, and Taylor went on to write for Voyager (and Piller left VOY around the time of Basics, IIRC), and Moore associated himself more with DS9. Moore and Braga both had their hands in TNG's final season, though Piller wasn't involved with it at all and the only S7 TNG ep Taylor is associated with as far as I know is Sub Rosa.

Even the best writers run out of ideas, which is why it's good to bring in new talent to shake things up. Notice how Enterprise improved when Manny Coto took over.

You're going by individual episode writing credits, but that only tells part of the story.

Piller was still involved to some degree with TNG during season 7. He wasn't the hands-on showrunner he had been in previous seasons, but he was still the top dog on creative matters.

Jeri Taylor was very much involved with S7, even though she only personally wrote one episode. After Piller's transition out of day-to-day operations, Taylor became the person running the writing room.

Moore and Braga were firmly a part of TNG's seventh season writing staff. They had wrapped up most of their Generations writing in the hiatus between seasons 6 and 7, and did not move on to DS9 and Voyager, respectively, until TNG had wrapped. Not to mention that they wrote the much-lauded "All Good Things..."

So everyone you mention was still definitely involved in a substantial way in season seven. Now, it's true, that in the case of Piller, his attentions were split between TNG, DS9, and Voyager. And Taylor was split between TNG and Voyager. But neither had stopped having a hand in TNG.

I also did not like the story in All Good Things...

I too wasn't that crazy about the story. First, it dealt with alternate futures, which is something a lot of Trekkers love. Personally, I'd rather see my characters in the present, not a future that the viewers know will never happen. Second, the story involves yet another anomaly. If you see them so often, are they really anomalous? Lastly, the movie's really about Picard. The stuff that happens in the future and past is reset so that none of the other characters know about it. In fact, Picard has to tell them. I did like that the movie tied back into the pilot and even allowed for Tasha Yar to make an appearance. And it was certainly better than the most of season 7. But it really wasn't that great a way to end the series. I guess Braga must've let all the praise for it go to his head considering he recycled it for the Voyager finale.

Season 7 isn't the worst season, but its not the best. It's firmly in the middle for me. I enjoyed Masks, which everyone seems to hate. I also liked Inheritance and All Good Things. Gambit doesn't really do anything for me, and seeing Genesis for the first time as a 4 year old has scarred me for life. So all in all, it's decent but not great like the seasons before it.

Season 7 is better than seasons 1 and 2, which really isn't saying much. It's just funny to listen to people like Will Wheaton talk about how bad those early seasons were.
