Series 6 prequel planned

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

Because some people can't cope with the fact that we'll be seeing Nixon in the next series. Imagine if British people reacted like that every time a British historical figure was about to be portrayed on the series.

We've learnt a long time ago not to be bothered with such things, like most Europeans really.

I'm just wondering if this thread will be closed due to the political nature of the discussion just like the "is Amy bi" thread I myself created recently and I see one of the culperates from that thread is in here too.

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

and to SCI, I fully and completely commend your rebuttal..

Good show, I respect your opinions and your eloquent and coherent response. You are a worthy and respectable-obviously intelligent, adversary in debate. I take back my statement regarding pitch forks and torches..you are truly with guts and possess an opinion. :)

Thank you for your kind words.

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

And companions really ought to scream again.

Yes because all women characters should be reduced to screaming wrecks and Rory seems the crying type not the screaming type :p

Yeah, some of the things people dislike Amy for seem to revolve around her acting a bit like a bloke...and heaven forbid a woman not just be a simpering nun...

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

Well, I'm a bloke, and reviewing some of last season's encounters ...

1. Giant floaty eyeball things telling me "Prisoner Zero has escaped" -- I'd scream.
2. Prisoner Zero -- I'd scream like a girl.
3. Tentacles coming up through the floor of a city-sized space ship -- I'd scream like a girl.
4. An oversized, over-detailed trash can with an eyestalk and a plunger -- I'd laugh at the silly-looking thing ... until it started shooting skeleton rays and then I'd run ... screaming like a girl.
5. Statues that chased me and ripped out my speech centers -- I'd rock back and forth, whimpering, "It's time to wake up ... it's time to wake up ... wakey, wakey! It's time to wake up!"
6. Sexy young ladies in their evening gowns speaking in unison -- "Oh this really is Christmas!" And then they'd show those teeth and I'd run screaming like a girl.
7. Old people with eyestalks for tongues -- "Eeeew!" But old people creep me out already, so this wouldn't be much worse.
8. Humanoid reptiles intent on wiping out humanity and taking back the planet -- Seriously? Alright, maybe I'm too into herpetology already, but while they might make me jump at first, I'm sure I could come to an equitable arrangement with them.
9. An invisible rooster with a fondness for baseboards -- "Vincent, that's a pretty creepy drawing you made there."
10. A holographic projection that wants to use me as its pilot -- "No, I'm not coming up those stairs until you exactly state the nature of the medical emergency."
11. Every enemy of the Doctor at once, united and determined to do something stupid -- I'd run off screaming like a girl.

So, I think it's pretty obvious that I'd be almost completely useless to the Doctor and probably would have been left behind somewhere well before I got a chance to redeem myself with a bunch of lizards. It's also pretty clear that if I were on the show, there'd be a lot more screaming. But that's just me, and Miss Pond might be made of sterner stuff than me.

Oh no, I wouldn't agree with that at all. I agree with you that they should scream a bit here and there, but I don't think that should be the sum of their characters.
and Rory seems the crying type not the screaming type :p
Yeah, as well as the snivelling "I'm a sad little man who's useless, the hammer fell on my foot when I tried to put up a shelf, I fall over into hedges after half a shandy, the Doctor's got a bigger willy than me, Amy makes me do the washing up while she watches me and shouts about what a shit job I'm doing, I'd kill myself and end my sad life if it wasn't guaranteed that I'd fuck it up and end up paralysed because I'm like all men - compared to sassy women like Amy, I'm a useless cu..." type.

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

^ I think Rory has gone from a crap opening character to a decent addition to the show. I don't think hes that much of a coward anymore but then again whats to fear after you've been wiped from existence ;)

The problem with Who in this era is you just get to know a character and they bog off, I would like the current lot to remain during Smith entire era but it won't happen.

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

I think the trouble is with having a strong main male character in the show these days (and maybe going all the way back to Pertwee) is that it potentially detracts from the Doctor as the big male lead...the only exception to this has probably been Jack, and as I say this isn't just a modern contrivence; Turlough, Adric, Harry...non of them are the big heroic types. Well maybe Harry, but even though quite brave he was a bit wet. Who needs a Jamie or an Ian when you have a younger, more vital Doctor (or someone like Pertwee who plays that role)?

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

Well, we did have the Brigadier, Benton and Yates in the Pertwee years as well.

Harry probably would've been more of an Ian-type had they went with the original plan and cast an old actor for the Fourth Doctor-and they ended up casting Tom instead.

any way those missing series 2 webisodes will make it on a future DVD or a Doctor who fanclub release?? I would love to have those on disc in my possession..:)

and any other Doctor who mini episodes not included on any of their DVD releases..

Obviously there's nothing stopping someone from making a private bootleg (all of the TARDISodes are available on torrents and YouTube, along with the others), but as far as I'm aware there are no such thing as "fan club releases" when it comes to Doctor Who. At least not involving anything actually produced by the BBC.

In the case of the TARDISodes they were probably produced with no licensing for home video release, so I would assume we won't see them ever released officially, likewise the others we've discussed, anytime soon. (Considering 2 Entertain included the 5-second stings from Season 1, and even included the 2009 Christmas trails on the Specials set, if they could have been released, they probably would have.) If TV series releases on some form of permanent media are still occurring in 2015, 2016 I could possibly see them included in some sort of anniversary edition, or maybe they could include them as "value added" content if they put out Blu-ray versions of the early seasons, but otherwise I wouldn't hold my breath.

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

I hope Tricky Dick won't be portrayed as anything more than what we know of him. It'd be interesting to see him try to build up a rapport with the Doctor like the slimeball he was, only for the Doctor to leave him with something along the lines of: "I don't like you. But it's not my place to judge or condemn you. History is quite capable of that".

Re: The Prequel (possible spoilers)

Richard Nixon's my favourite.

There you go, you see. It's not a clear cut case of him being objectively bad, and I certainly don't want any of that Doctor condemning him rubbish in there. It'd be about as clever as The Happiness Patrol's attempt to satirise Thatcher. And that was rubbish, by the way.

Well, yeah. At least at first. Up through "Vampires of Venice", I'd say. But he did a good job vindicating himself in the finale. I keep coming back to the 2,000 years he spent guarding the Pandorica. That was epic!

He's certainly not a macho hero. He's an every-man kind of character who hasn't found himself yet -- who still needs to grow up. I keep hoping the events of the finale will have a lasting effect on Rory and make him more capable, but we haven't seen enough of him yet to really know for sure. Maybe the Comic Relief shorts showing him helping the Doctor fly the TARDIS is a hopeful sign, but then he did drop the thermocouple looking up his wife's skirt, so ....

Well, you mention that Pandorica lark and rightly. But it's had no change on the character at all. He's still the useless pipsqueak twat I described above. And the thing is, you'd never get away with the roles reversed - if the woman character was a buffoonish milquetoast and the man was sassy and confident, it'd be immediately condemned. But this is just as sexist. These days it's only really fine to portray men as mostly blundering idiots, and this is an example of it.

Prequel's what they call it, though I'd have thought technically its a prelude :D

Yeah, I was going to point that out. It would be a prequel if it aired afterward.

Are we sure he's supposed to be President Nixon? I thought he looked a lot like President Johnson. Then again, they both have big noses and that's about all I have to go with anyway.

You sure do read a lot into dropping a hammer.

Rory is always going to keep his good natured and almost geeky side because thats who he is but when confronted with danger, hes not going to fall to pieces like a bumbling idiot ;).

Rory and Amy do make a good couple despite what we saw in the 11th Hour, the two have grown since then.
