Mystery Object

Am I right in guessing that the big round part is loose but not to the point of you being able to remove it from the stick part?

I reckon it's something to do with knitting, how big is this thing? You don't say how high it is anywhere that I've seen, i'm guessing it's like 2ft?

An old style musical instrument, sans strings and tuning keys?

<looks closer>

Ah, it's round, not flat.

Some kind of spire, off a building? That's what it reminds me of. Can't tell what the base looks like, if it's been cut.

Idea 1: It's what somebody produced in lathing class: a practice piece with no particular function. The creator was proud of their work, so the piece was put on display, and over time earned it's place as an ornament. It has since been kept in the family as an ornament.

Idea 2: Turning it upside down, it could be a float of some kind, perhaps used in the fishing industry. We could imagine strings from the nets looped around the thinner part of the shaft, with the ball acting as the float, while the thicker part of the shaft bobs out of the water.

Idea 3: Turned upside down, it could a leg from a fancy table/chair. It is about 40cm long, the standard length of the chair leg. Does the fat end have any marks that suggest it has been connected to something else? Could it be a spare leg, if for example, one of your ancestors was a furniture maker?

That's what I was thinking; the work of a student!

He said in the first post that it is 15 inches high which is why I said that I thought it might be some sort of yarn holder.

Oops:rolleyes: Thanks Miss C! I concur anyway, a yarn holder gets my vote.

Seems reasonable - look at the yarn holder on this antique spinning wheel:

I am almost certain it is off a spinning wheel.

Look at this photo

The photo is from this site.

I gather that this part of a spinning wheel is called the maiden. I think Finn's object is a homemade maiden that wasn't completely finished being made i.e. no groves.
