NASA plans to send Robonaut 2 (R2) into space. R2 will be the first human-like robot in space when it is launched on the shuttle Discovery later this year to become a permanent resident of the International Space Station (ISS).
300-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands.
With human-like hands and arms, R2 is able to use the same tools station crew members use.
For now, R2 is still a prototype and does not have adequate protection needed to exist outside the space station in the extreme temperatures of space.

However, future enhancements and modifications may allow it to move more freely around the station's interior or outside the complex.
This is good news as surely there will be robotic needs on the journey to the next place humans will land on.
Those hands look great. 5 fingers. I can see the uses on earth for them too.

It already says the Robonaut 2 is only supposed to be used on the interior of the ISS. The Repair robot that I am referring to is supposed to be mounted on the girder system and use The or a version of The Canadian robotic arm. I didn't recall NASA putting this robot up on the ISS so it seemed a little strange for them to spend the money to put another robot on the interior of the station.
