If they cannot stick to the established story they should not use the title of that story.Who cares who's in it and where it takes place, as long as they make an entertaining movie out of it, and it's too early to judge that aspect.

They should be honest and title it "Just Give Us Your Money, 'Tards" since that's obviously their goal and their evaluation.

I don't know how to post youtube videos here so instead I'll just link here.
Anyways, this is what I imagine an Americanized version of Akira would look like.
What makes you think they're not sticking to the established story? They're changing the setting and the ethnicity of the main characters, but those are minor changes. If they cannot stick to the established story they should not use the title of that story.

Not really. If his adaptation of the HP novels are anything to go by, he can write a hell of a lot better than even the original authors. The first thing you should be worried about is Steve Kloves adapting this screenplay...

I don't get the big deal, when they remade other Japanese movies like Shall We Dance or The Ring or Dark Water and cast non-Asian actors, nobody complained about "racebending" then. Isn't it common practice when remaking a movie in another country to actually cast actors from that country? Was it also inexcusable to relocate Seven Samurai to the Old West and fill the cast with mostly white actors? Or remake Yojimbo with Clint Eastwood?
If they're going to make Akira straight from the original script, but with American actors, and still call it "Akira"... well, it just makes no sense to me.
Eh, Japan had a japanese Spider-Man living in Tokyo. Why? Because it was made for a japanese audience. "Racebending" wasn't a big deal then and it shouldn't be a big deal now.
Was his name still Peter Parker, or was it a Japanese name?
