why even care.... You're not on the corporate board of directors that needs to make a profit in order to make a movie or movies in the future. even if it means you have to use middle american natives in order to drag enough people to the movies to make the movie even profitable to try and make... join the real world.

The other characters could be Ken Neda, Ted Suo, and so on.

It's simply a different take on the property. It may be good, it may be bad depending on how well they adapt it to stand on its own merits. I'm sure nothing short of a clone of the original will please purists, but that's generally the case anyhow with these kind of things, IMO.
Personally, I'm expecting it to be similar to the original only in the overall story, with the rest given the Hollywood treatment. I even expect the characters of Tetsuo and Kaneda to be renamed and redesigned in some fashion...

Was his name still Peter Parker, or was it a Japanese name?
Meh - Akira (the anime - I haven't read the manga) was overrated in my opinion anyway, so I wouldn't mind a new take and setting it in Manhattan is more likely to draw a bigger audience. It's not likely it'll be any good anyway, truth be told, but I don't think this is the deal breaker.
They changed his name to Takuya Yamashiro, they also gave him a giant robot.
The first thing you should be worried about is Steve Kloves adapting this screenplay...
I find it mildly amusing that it will still be called "Akira" despite being otherwise Americanized but beyond that I can't say I care.
Fred. They should call it Fred.
They should be honest and title it "Just Give Us Your Money, 'Tards" since that's obviously their goal and their evaluation.
