Glee creator blasts Slash, Kings of Leon for snubbing show

If a band doesn't want their music on a shit show, good for them. It's nice to see someone take the quality into account instead of just blindly whoring their music out to whatever gets a few extra dollars.

I've heard some of the recordings, and they use a very liberal amount of the pitch machine to fix some really BAD singing. The dark-haired girl who plays Rachel is probably the only one worth anything on that show. It's crap. And from what I understand it sounds like it's completely depleted of any new ideas - almost as though the writers never intended or expected the show to make it beyond the first half-season.

Edited to add: Oh yeah, I'm happy some artists have snubbed the show. Why would they want their songs treated like teeny-bopper crap to make a few more bucks is beyond me.

Looking back on this argument and having thought about it a bit more, I understand a little more about why Slash wouldn't want his music anywhere near this show. He makes his music (presumably) for adult audiences. To use a hypothetical situation, it would be like if Disney wished to create their own take on Robocop. What resulted would be non-violent for teen audiences, with some annoying child actors that nobody likes and "emotional conflicts" that we've seen a thousand times before.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has two choice words for one of the bands that has kept their music off the Fox hit — and they aren’t “Forget You.”

“F— you, Kings of Leon,” Murphy says, recalling how the Grammy-winning rockers denied Glee‘s request to cover “Use Somebody.”

“They’re self-centered a–holes, and they missed the big picture,” Murphy continues, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter. “They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument…. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

Yes, the older (but still singing in most cases) actors kind of throw off the age range for 'Glee,' but who would have been better to sing a song called 'Use Somebody' on Glee personality-wise than Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester? Even then, the age range of most of the kids and the Kings of Leon members (24, 26, 29, and 31) are the same or just a few years younger.

I can't speak to their popularity among seven-year-olds (or why somewhat older-oriented fare like either Glee or Kings of Leon is being aimed at the seven-year-olds in the first place), but I know Kings of Leon is hugely popular in the same teen and young adult demographic that Glee is. Teenage girls love Kings of Leon. Just check Facebook.

So, while I have no doubt that Kings of Leon would gain new listeners from Glee that they didn't have before, the claim that they'd be breaking them into some entirely new demographic because the much younger singers on Glee who aren't actually much younger are singing their songs is dubious, at best.

Besides which, Kings of Leon's explanation that they were concerned about over-saturating the market at the time the song was first becoming popular is both reasonable and respectable. There was no snub directed at the show, and for the showrunner to react the way he did shows a profound sense of arrogance and entitlement on his part.

As far as the "homophobic" accusation, I think it was pretty clear the comments were meant to convey that Murphy was being a whiny drama queen and a diva in context. I doubt the band member who said it was even aware that Murphy was gay. I had no idea until now. Does he just assume that that is common knowledge amongst non-fans of the show? Given how full of himself he comes off, maybe he does. But just throwing out such a serious accusation without proof in a dispute which you started is pretty tactless.

I agree, most people don't know who is gay in Hollywood because no one cares! Bryan Singer (I wrote Fuller who is also gay) is gay, everyone knows him for XMen, very few people know he's gay and no one else cares.

Kings of Leon will never watch Glee, and even if they were does that mean they know Ryan Murphy is gay? Nope, I thought he was, just because of the way Kurt is written, but never cared enough to look it up.

I think "blankie" instead of bra would have been even funnier and has no made up "gay" BS to it.

As much as I do love Glee, I also agree with every artist's right to use their song as they see fit. Grohl is right, there's no reason that everyone should just fall in line hoping that Glee wants to use their songs. I like my Kings of Leon and Nirvana untainted...

I do love Glee's versions of Don't Stop Believin' and Jessie's Girl just to name a couple though...

To me it seems that Grohl is a bit of a hypocrite about it.. that whole Kings of Leon/Slash business has been buried weeks ago and as i said earlier Murphy came out as a dick (even though it's one of my current favorite shows) but it has apparently become fashionable to bash Glee to show you are true hardcore, non-mainstream because you care about the music and not the money.

It reeks of dishonesty and seems as just a vehicle to improve one's own rep or why would he excavate that whole thing when Murphy hasn't even mentioned the Foo Fighters? It's just like piling on to show they're cool and different from the mindless mainstream music drones who just want to make big bucks by having their songs on Glee.

That might have made his comments untimely (if not, as noted before, for the fact he was specifically asked about it) but it doesn't make him hypocritical.

I'm not a big fan of theirs (I like a handful of their hits), but I don't see how you can call the Foo Fighters a "has been" band.

According to Wikipedia, their last all-new album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace was nominated for five Grammy Awards in 2008 and went gold.

They've got a new album coming out next month and the first single from it already went to Number 1 on the rock charts.

Another band I'm not a fan of but another band that you can't just dismiss out of hand. They've been around for over twelve years and continue to turn out popular music.

Every band should have the words "no comment" at their fingertips as soon as the are presented with a question about Glee. It's just not worth getting involved.

I enjoy watching Glee, but I completely understand why a band would deny them a copyright license. It doesn't help that they release the song covers online (itunes, etc.) and via cd. Though, I don't know if they give bands the option of just having the song on the show and not sold in other formats.
