USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g mode

Nascence

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Hi Everyone!
I am looking for a good CGI 3D modeler who would be interested in doing an accurate 3D model of my USS Detroyat heavy destroyer design.
I have been revisiting this design for the past 6 months or so and have come up with a definitive version of this design.
Most of design has been completely re-fleshed out and I a need someone with CGI skills who would want to work on this design with me to complete a fairly comprehensive CGI model.
I, originally, had Axeman here at the Trek BBS working with me on this, but he can no longer dedicate his time to my project.
The design is completely revisited and more thoroughly designed and I plan to re-release a new set of blueprint illustrations on this design in a more comprehensive digital format with more comprehensive data and information on this starship class.
I have some CGI images complete to aide a new artists and all of the orthographic views are complete and almost completely color rendered.
If interested, the artist would have to agree to certain terms that limit the release of images that you would need to work with.
I am posting a link to an 80% complete profile view to show everyone and interested artists what the updated drawings look like to date.

Hi Madman!
Thanks for posting your info.
That was nice, but brave gesture on your part
I'll be emailing you sometime soon.
Thanks for responding to the post I sent to you at your site.

No problem. :) My address is all over the place... I don't worry about it, too much. :)

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

I am, once again, looking for a good CG modeler to model my USS Detroyat heavy destroyer design.
I have been revisiting this design and project for a year and I am creating a high quality, color illustrated, comprehensive set of plans and details on this design that I will be making available for sale within the next month or two.
The artist who wishes to take on this project will get a free set of signed/numbered plans when completed along with a digital copy of the original hi Res images to do with as they please.
Also, you get credit, in the set, for any final images used and general credit in the acknowledgements section at the end of these plans.
I need a fairly comprehensive model made by the end of April/early May at the very latest.
Here are image links to the creation of the set of plans, in progress.

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

that's an odd looking ship.

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

^It's an old fanon design. I remember having a 1 sheet poster print with it back in the early/mid 80's. I always kind of liked it.

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

I am the originator/designer of the Detroyat.
This design is early TOS era, pre STTMP vessel class.
There was never meant to be any pure TOS-fied version of this design.
I have been revisiting this design for a year.
The design is now much more fully realized than in the original plans and this new set is much more comprehensive and detailed.
I do not want to go into a lot of detail about the project, as it is still a work in progress, but to answer your questions about the coloration.
It is done to show that the ship could be built from materials that haven't been developed or discovered yet that may have different types of qualities and reflective qualities to the material.
I have, basically, used the original coloration that was used on the Vulcan shuttle model used in STTMP.
To me that color scheme gave the model (as a real spacecraft) the impression of being built with some alien or futuristic alloy.
I like the idea of the ship looking a different set of colors other than grays or blues.
That and I am real tired of gray/blue looking starships.
Boring!

Still looking for an 3D artist to help me on this project.

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

Here's is my rough 2D render of how this design might look in deep space.

http://img151.imageshack.us/f/ussdetroyatncc1100onpat.jpg/

The unusual coloration of the ship maybe more apparent in other more light intensive areas of space, but in a minimal, far away light source from deep space, its actual color isn't as apparent.
I am thinking the new, unusual color scheme may look real cool in settings where there is more ambient light from either a planet or space nebula or if there is a strong light source from a sun.

Still looking for an interested CGI artist to help me on this project.

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

Where there is a will, there's way!
Since I have been unsuccessful in enticing a 3D modeler to work with me on this project (Jason "Vektor" Lee was very interested in taking on this project, but he has too many of his own projects on his plate, already and said he wouldn't be able to start on this for a few months), I have decided to
do the best I can on my own.
So, not to be deterred, I took matters into my own hands.
I have an existing high res image of a model of Detroyat that was done many years ago by a guy whose name I am not sure of. I think his name was Thayer Bayes or Thaxter Bayes.
Also known as Atra Hasis
He did a pretty comprehensive version of my ship based, for the most part off of my original 1st revision plans. There were design liberties and elements in his drawings that I don't agree with, but it's close enough to my original design that I am using this as my base model and images to work off on.

So, as of two weeks ago,, I have been busy using that drawing and in combination with other parts of the ship that had been modeled by two other CGI artist that I worked with, but for reasons out of both our control, could not continue (thanks for the efforts and time you gave to me Axeman and Madman). I am assembling my own 3D model piece-ing and modifying items together in Photoshop like a big, giant jigsaw puzzle.

I am about 1/3 done with this as the image has three views that I may want to be able to use in my new, revised booklet of plans project.
So by carefully increasing the resolution of all the appropriated images and parts that I need to piece together AND having to draw a lot of modifications and details from scratch, I am assembling and putting together a really good model of the Detroyat. Using the new revised design in guiding me.
I am just concentrating on building and detailing the model only. I do not know how or what kind of illustrative background I will be using along with the finished model views to complete a portrait to include with this booklet.
I just want to put the modeling portion of this behind me so I return to working on the booklet of plans of this design.
I am hoping to complete this whole thing by next week, if I don't totally lose my mind by then.
So, here's a 3/4 view of the new and improved USS Detroyat looking upward toward the bottom of the primary hull along with an image of one of the original views of the original design that I am using as a base image.

Many elements of the original model have been modified (slightly and heavily) and many new elements have been added.
All done with Photoshop.

Well done with the photoshoping, that can't have been easy.

Those plans look great too. It's certainly an intriguing design. :bolian:

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

Can't say I care much for purple and green, but other than that, nice work!

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

I have never seen anyone translate the TMP "look" as successfully -- and without aztecing! Your coloring evokes that exotic look without copying it. I am very impressed, both by the product and by your determination to not give up and instead take your Photoshop skills and go it alone. Great work!

Re: USS Detroyat-Look'g for a good CGI artist interested in create'g m

@ Potemkin Prod,
Hi !

I have, basically, used the original coloration that was used on the Vulcan shuttle model used in STTMP.
To me that color scheme gave the model (as a real spacecraft) the impression of being built with some alien or futuristic alloy. We might discover/adopt future materials and alloys that have real different properties and reflective properties to them. In addition I got the idea for these colors based, literally, on the inside of a shell I bought some years, ago. Believe it or not, that shell had some really reflective colors in it and one of them was this greenish looking hue.
The whole of this came from an article I read about how the actual paint job looked on the 8 foot STTMP model before the had to dull it down somewhat and photograph it in subdued lighting for the model effects sequences in TMP. The model was painted in such glossy and subtle blues, reds, pink/purples and greens that it looked like it was made from an abalone shell material or mother of pearl material. I guess in natural of bright lights, this model had a really bright a colorful sheen to it.
So, that's what I am trying to evoke in the colors I chose to render this design.
I like the idea of the ship looking a different set of colors other than grays or blues.
That and I am real tired of gray/blue looking starships.
Boring!
I decided to go for a sort of two-tone or tri-tone color effect for the bottom/underside view based on the paint schemes used on early WW I & II aircraft that had a different coloring on the underside of the fuselage. Trying to come up with a contrast color to the pinkinsh-purpish hues I used for the hull and not having it look really garish was hard.
The green/blue I used is a little bright and unexpected, but that was sort of the look I was going for. It is only used in a limited area. I could go back to a more pinker hue that I used on the bottom of the smaller secondary hull, but it wold be much of a contrast.

@ Aridas,

Thanks for your kind comments! :)
Doing all this Photoshop work is just as nearly difficult as trying to build this with a 3D program!
I am getting my head around Blender, but I haven't spent much time with it i the last 4-6 weeks or so because I am trying to get this project done and benind. me.
That and my Blender skills are no where near proficient enough to accomplish what I have been showing in these images.
One of the problems I am going to have once I decided on what sort of portraits and backgrounds I will use to complete these images is lighting. 3D programs make it easier and accurate to get realistic scene lighting. I will have to do my best to approximate this in Photoshop.
Haven't a clue as how to accomplish this yet.
I will have to experiment.
Again,
Thanks!
