Star Trek: Online

In all honesty it's a good MMO and as a Star Trek Fan I cant get enough of it.

It's abit limiting with the current level cap of Vice Admiral but once it's increased it will be great.

I don't want to put people off STO, the game is fantastic but the STO forum and Moderators are not!

The Forum is full of praise and amazing helpful info like any forum yet once you voice your opinion against cryptic, be prepared to be silenced by their moderators.

If you complain about anything to do with STO or CRYPTIC your post will be edited by THEM, if you post something that in anway puts cryptic in a bad light they will edit your posting to suit THEM.

For example I posted a thread about the insanly large patches that take hours if not days to download ( no joke, many people have this issue with STO) and as a PAYING CUSTOMER I thought it was insane. I also voiced my opinion that Cryptic were focusing on Money Making aspects of the game such as c-store items which is a store that you can buy items with using Atari Credits which are bought using real money.. I dont have anything against that but when the majority of LARGE patches rolled out only adds items that are available on the C-store and not actually any creative content such as new explorable planets, systems and etc... it will peeve some if not most...okay yes they did roll out a new series (weekly missions - 1 new mission a week), yet the majority of common issues such as server connection errors and etc.. have gone unfixed. For this I got a warning and had the entire post which had several hundred words down to a few sentences...

their explanation was : Mildly Obscene/Vulgar/Inappropriate Objectionable Material.

Yet their are threads that are tasteless in content such as name inappropriately named ships which does not leave much to the imagination, and they dont edit or filter those threads.

I know STO is only over a year old and content will only improve but when paying customers are silenced and not even allowed to voice their concerns is in my view a good way to loose and disappoint people. THE STO OFFICIAL FORUM IS A POLICE STATE.

Just me expressing the freedom of free speach!

BUT HONESTLY THE GAME IS SUPERB!..the game...

Personally the only problem I've had with the fourms is arrogant PVPers who think their the end all be all of the game. Especially when without any proof of it they pull the we're the majority so kiss my ass card.

Actually, the STO Forum moderators are quite leniant for an MMO. Try and post the same style of rant on Blizzard's WoW forum or ANY SOE MMO game forum, and not only will you see your post (or thread) outright deleted; you my find your game access account suspended or outright banned as well.

Here's how fair they are; I know an individual who got perma-banned on the City of Heroes forums back when Cryptic was still affiliated with that game, who got multiple chances on the Champions Online forums before he got perma-banned there, who then got two more chances on the STO forums before he got perma-banned there.

He never lost game access. He's perma-banned in my Cryptic-related IRC channels though.

Ah, poo. I'm much, much less excited about those, now.

That bridge in particular looks pretty gloomy - colours are off, the generic 'photos' don't fit the TOS aesthetic, and so much for 'closer scale'!

It's one thing to make the floorplan larger, but another to use a massive Captain's chair - my characters are going to look like children in that thing!

Yeah, weird metaphor. In any event, since the whole thing is about stuff they are trying to SELL us, rather than improvements they made on their own, it's more like the HOOKER they sent us is brunette when you ordered a blonde, if you want to pick the right complaint ;)

Either way, wish more effort was going into gameplay fixes and additional storylines rather than more kewl stuff to sell people. Know one obviously pays more than the other, but still, I guess I'd rather have more stuff I'd already paid for rather that stuff I owe money on top of the $400 or so I'm already into this game for.

They do a great job with the stuff they're adding, but get the level 61 cap out before playing with more uniforms and ships to buy...

Level cap raise is estimated between seasons 5 and 6 according to the latest Ask Cryptic.
With season 4 around the corner that probably means end of this year.

Ooo, very nice. I would like the option of a TNG medical lab coat too though.

For me there still lots of content I haven't touched yet. I'm just getting started in the Diplomatic stuff and I haven't finished the Undine front with any character so far.

Why does this keep being said? You have to know that the people who do the bug fixes are not the same ones who make the stuff for the C-Store.

Hey, this free sex is defective, she's not blond!

Actually, to address this seriously (in as much as I can take a crass 'sex' metaphor seriously), I've got to say this:

Apart from anything else, a C-Store item isn't in any way 'free'.

The problem here is that it's another case of Cryptic saying "do you want _____ in-game?", the players replying "oh, goodness - yes please!!", and Cryptic responding "...well, we've done a rough version that doesn't do what you all thought it does, but enjoy anyway!", then looking surprised and indignant when people don't automatically 'love' it.

Look at the 'open jacket' uniforms - when the Devs announced that they'd be adding TNG-era versions as well, people were naturally interested. Even more so when it was said that we'd be getting open versions of the DS9 and TNG-movie outfits, plus the TNG Captain's uniform.

What did we end up getting? The TNG Captain's undershirt, and the DS9/TNG-movie outfits with the TNG undershirt - in other words, a mis-matched version of a load of unrelated uniform parts, instead of the looks we thought we were getting. So yeah - waste of Atari Tokens, and it's unlikely that the proper uniform options are going to be added anytime soon.

With that being the case, and with the IMO underwhelming teasers of the new TOS, can you blame folk like me for being a bit more cautious before blowing ACTUAL MONEY on these things.

(in other words, 'Free sex' doesn't mean you pay 20 quid, and get a kick in the nuts for your trouble...)

Reminds me of Patton Oswalt's fantastic rant about George Lucas... :rommie:

Yes, but it's not hard to figure out why people say this. If they have 10 developers, and 5 work on new content, and 5 work on stuff for the C-Store (which is generally only available by paying extra for it), it means they could redistribute it and take more people off of the C-Store items in order to either release more content/bug fixes faster, or more of them. I'm sure that's NOT the ratio, but even if their priorities are 80% bug fixes and new content to only 20% working on stuff to sell us, I'd prefer they take more people off of it. These things would be pretty cool if they were all available in the game we've already paid for, but since most of them are add-ons you get to pay extra for, a lot of the appeal is gone. I like the different era uniforms, but not going to go out and buy every pack as it's released. Some of the pay-ships are cooler looking than the lame mid-level ships, but you basically discard them as you rank up anyway, so why buy them? Now you can pay extra for the same uniforms you already have, but with a strip of color down the center! Buy upgraded ship interiors, but they don't factor into the gameplay at all, because we're busy selling you shit!

Sorry, but after being $400+ into this game, i'm more interested in them giving me what I've already paid for, and having them make more items for me to pay for is fairly low on my priority list. For that kind of money, a lot of this stuff should be included for free...

yeah, I'd be slightly more willing to shell out for extras if the game was Free To Play like LOTRO is, but since I'm already paying for the game I doubt I'll spend any on extras

What use would it be to pull off a graphic artist working on new ships or costumes and place him in a position to fix buggy code?

There is with a few exceptions no cross over here. They are separate teams and separate disciplines.

You would end up spending far more per month if the game was "free to play"
There is a reason so many companies are looking to that business model.

Most "free to play" games make you pay for almost everything if you don't subscribe to the gold package. So you end up paying for new areas to explore, most character options, and all sorts f give you an advantage in game items.
The kids I baby sit and their parents easily 60 or 70 bucks a month for wizard101 and even more for free realms.

And my friends who play asian mmo's which are the base model for "free to play" spend in a month several times what a 14.99 subscription game would cost.
As for STO is you want to see what "free to play" means. Look at Champions online. unless you throw down money (quite a bit) the game is very limited. You have to buy all but a small number of classes and if you want new content you have to buy adventure packs.

With "free to play" the customer see's "free" and plays. then starts wanting to buy all of the cool stuff he sees others have or are doing and starts putting down cash. Most of the payments seem small but over time they add up to far more than a subscription model would cost.
LOTR online is probably the least like the others but even with that I suspect most players are spending a lot more money than you think they are.
