Rick Berman comments on Ron Jones

First of all I'd like to say some of the stuff that Ron Jones composed is absoultely sensational. Music make a film and Berman doesn't seem to understand that. Star Trek II and Star Trek III was the music and opratic themes and Star Wars music was an escalation, the ANNOUNCEMENT that you were about to witness an epic adventure

Ron Jones is a theme composer and it's movie like...that's a feeling you need on the small screen when ratings are at stake. This doesn't do anything for my drained respect for Rick Berman.

Ron Jones was fired from Star Trek for doing scores like this. There is a place in hell reserved for producers (Rick Berman) that fire talented composers.~indastrol

LOL, I love the martyrdom Ron Jones has achieved. He must be The Chosen One of all those thousands of composers whose scores have been rejected. No hate for Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett because they decided against Jerry Goldsmith?

   Man, James Horner rocked. But then again, so did Jerry Goldsmith. And for my money, so did Michael Giacchino. And so did Alexander Courage, George Duning, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky, Joseph Mullendore, and Fred Steiner. They should all get to together and form a rock band, because they rock so much!

Remember, Rick Berman is also involved. It's HIS name that's drawing people to be sympathetic to Ron Jones.

If it had been, say, Michael Piller who fired Ron Jones folks wouldn't be drawn so much because Piller has a much better status amongst Trekkies.

I disagree.

The facts are Ron Jones was fired by Rick Berman. Ron Jones says it. Rick Berman admits it.

Ron Jones got into a pissing contest with the boss and lost. Why wouldn't it be different if the boss' name on the door were different? I remember when Ron's firing happened. I believe I was posting on the old AOL Trek message boards. Rick Berman was VERY popular at that time, and he caught a lot of flack then for this decision. Anyone else making the same decision would have drawn the same ire.

Well, as others have pointed out, Ron Jones was outright fired, while Trek has a pool of composers to draw from. Goldsmith, by nature of movies, isn't so restricted -- the right composer for the right movie is no different than the right composer for the right episode, it's just that films come by less frequently than episodes; likewise, Goldsmith came back to the franchise repeatedly so he wasn't fired or eliminated in the sense that Jones was. Even if Meyer and Bennett didn't choose Goldsmith, there were still good relations between him and the franchise that he could be invited back; not so much with Jones and Berman, and Berman himself says that.

You mean when they couldn't afford him? And, no hate here. Horner was more than up to the task and provided that peskily thematic and bombastic music that Berman would hate.
