I'll heal it, too. :p It's a better episode than the fans give it credit for (as well as JMS). Better in terms of Crusade episodes, anyway. The series never found its feet.

As a standalone episode it's not bad, but the umbrage comes from it being a complete waste of time. It exists solely because the studio did not give audiences credit for being able to get into the story "running". That we had to have a formulaic "here's the set up" exposition.

ETA: Saying the series never found its legs is kind of inaccurate, because it was never given the chance to. It was killed off before it ever aired a single episode.

I don't think it's inaccurate. The series never found its legs. Of course, we all know that it didn't have a chance to, but that doesn't negate the fact. As for the episodes, I really have no strong feelings (or memories) of the series (despite owning it), besides "Visitors from Down the Street," which was a tone-deaf parody of The X-Files (seriously, it's like JMS got his idea of what the show was like based on a poorly written summary on wikipedia) that didn't fit.

Have you guys read the synopses for the two big episodes written but not produced, the "Signs and Portent" and "Crystalis" episodes? Those sounded incredible. Definitely had me excited for what might have been.

I recall reading at the time that X-Files was one of 2 or 3 tv shows JMS actually bothered to watch in the 90s while making the show.

I have not--just the short summaries of them that are on Wikipedia.

If JMS actually watched The X-Files, then color me even more unimpressed by "Visitors from Down the Street."

What fact? If it was aborted and never had a chance, why hold it responsible for others' actions? It may not allegedly "have found its legs", but I am convinced it would have had it been allowed to complete that first season, as the three un-produced scripts been filmed. I'm including "Value Judgments", which would have been the next.

OK. I think the show was starting to find its legs with the unproduced scripts, which I consider to be part of the show, despite the fact that they were never filmed.

Neroon, "Value Judgments" wasn't going to be the next one filmed. It was 1x15. 1x14 was "To the Ends of the Earth".

I get frustrated by this. If you look at the production order of Babylon 5, Chrysalis was filmed 12th.

If Crusade had done the same we could've got End of the Line!

101 Infection by J. Michael Straczynski
102 Soul Hunter by J. Michael Straczynski
103 Midnight on the Firing Line by J. Michael Straczynski
104 Born to the Purple by Larry DiTillio
105 Believers by David Gerrold
106 And the Sky Full of Stars by J. Michael Straczynski
107 The War Prayer by D. C. Fontana
108 The Parliament of Dreams by J. Michael Straczynski
109 Grail by Christy Marx
110 Mind War by J. Michael Straczynski
111 Survivors by Mark Scott Zicree

113 Deathwalker by Larry DiTillio

Wikipedia aside, I should have said "aired". It would have been the next one to air.

I don't think that's correct. "To the Ends of the Earth" opens with the "laundry accident", that explains the shift back to the black uniforms. "Value Judgments" then follows on from there, with the black uniforms.

The episode (of those 3) that would have aired "out of order" from the production order is "End of the Line", which would have been filmed 16th, but aired 22nd (the season finale).

I'm sure it may have. But those scripts were never filmed, so it didn't. Which is all I have been saying. I don't think many people consider un-filmed scripts to be part of a series. Just a possibility as to what might have been if the series hadn't been unceremoniously cancelled before it ever aired.

Not just aborted, there were many suggestions throughout the production. To my mind, trying to comply with those left the show with a bit of a watered down feel to it. For samples of what the production had to contend with:
